Found a pair of Whispbars locally for a good price and mounted them up this morning. For those that have these installed on a B7 what’s the ideal spacing between the bars?

Tons of fall color out in the PNW so I had to snag a pic:

I've got whispbars too and have the front bar mounted just after the sunroof so it can tilt open fully. The rear bar is 28" back measuring from the middle of the bars. Has worked fine for over 3 years now. Awesome fall photo btw!

Looks good as always!

I have mine off right now but I usually have my front maybe 1/2” behind the rear sunroof edge so it doesn’t hit, then around 3-5” behind the rear roof rail support.

For this Packasport box I was limited by the spacing of the box and moved them way up so the tailgate wouldn’t hit the box and get scratched up.

Thanks guys! I guessed right, went right behind the sunroof so I can still use the tilt function and the rear bar is about 3.5-4” behind the support leg.

I already think I want to wrap them black to match the rails.

Good call, mine are powder coated black and it looks clean! Had a bunch of people asking if it was OE. I wonder how a wrap will hold up against the clamps (I'm assuming you're going to put a box or bike rack on it).

My Yakima ski rack fits but I had to buy new stainless bolts at Stone Way Hardware so they could attach properly without hitting the roof. The best way is to use the bolt
Kits that slot into the t-channel in the bars but those are a bit pricey and I was being cheap.

Has anyone been successful in replacing the taillight (brake, signal) bulbs 921/T10/194 with LEDs and not getting dash errors? The deAutoLED website doesn't specify any bulbs that they claim work for the the rear lights except reverse, which are the same as the other bulbs. Is there a reason those bulbs can't be used as the brake and signal bulbs as well? Has anyone tried Lumen bulbs from Carid?

Cross posted w/ B8 forum, Avants have different bulbs

Charles.waite
10-31-2018, 07:56 AM
You’ll likely need resistors to cancel the errors. You’ll need canbus compatible bulbs at a minimum, and bulbs that will dim properly with the PWM power our cars use to modulate the brightness/output. Some cheaper bulbs will just flicker rather than dim.

It’s Really hit or miss if a bulb will cause errors but the smaller 5watt bulbs are easier to make error free than the brighter 25w bulbs because you need larger resistors and the extra heat those create.

Thanks. I found a couple of threads on Audiworld where people had examples of 194/921 bulbs from Amazon and eBay that didn't throw errors, but only as reverse lights. Since the sedans use different bulbs for the rest of the taillights it doesn't seem like anyone has done much experimenting with the avant brake and signal lights. I know @poodini, @zachl and @jeriqo have had success in the sedans, but just with reverse and front signals I believe, and they seem to have had issues with 'cheap' bulbs.

The avant has 8 194/921 bulbs in the rear end, at $25 (deAutoLED) each that is a lot cash for bulbs.

no success here and i tried about 4 sets of bulbs ranging from$5 to $30. i believe almost all of B8s will throw reverse bulb error codes unless you get an unreasonably expensive bulb or add resistors.
i had a buddy disable the reverse code via vagcom. got $5 dollar bulbs there for couple years now and it looks way brighter than philips

I don't understand why everybody is so scared of adding resistors

Charles.waite
10-31-2018, 09:01 AM
Wiring in resistors in the back can be tricky because there is limited space, however, I agree, resistors really aren’t that scary, you just need to size them properly so they dissipate enough current to cancel the error but don’t get hot as the sun. The trick with it is there’s not really a good way to know how much current the resistor needs to draw unless you have a variable resistor setup to figure it out or you just play guess and check. Resistors are cheap so that method isn’t that bad, it’s just tedious.

From what I’ve found on my b7, for 25w drls (generally the same 1156 bulbs used in many many places, including brake lights) the bulb out triggers below 7w draw. I sized a 50-ohm resistor for the drls and wired it in and coupled with the 5-6w draw of my LEDs its not thrown an error once and the resistor is barely hot to the touch after long stretches.

It pays to do some basic research and math when you’re doing it and you won’t have to deal with the common downsides of wiring in resistors. Most plug and play kits on eBay grossly oversize the resistor so that they work for all cases. Most resistors in those kits are 6-ohms which draws 33w @14V which is 8w more than the basic 25W bulbs. So you’re dissipating way too much energy (and this producing way too much heat) simply because the manufacturers want a universal kit that anyone can use. That’s when you start burning things and melting wiring or bulb housings.

tankdeer
10-31-2018, 09:12 AM
At least in the case of the B7 Avant (I know the OP is talking about a B8), there is ample room in the rear for resistors. If you remove the taillight there is a large air gap between the fender & rear bumper. That's where I mounted the ones for our reverse lights. ~6.5 years later and no issues, and I didn't have to go through 5 sets of $40 bulbs to find ones that worked.

I paid $9500 all in (cough) for an 08 S Line with 135,000km on the clock but 45,000km on the block and head and full service history. Comparables in my area are going for $5500k-$11,000k but without the service history. Yea, that sounds about right. What YOU are willing to pay vs what the market will bear are two different things, often.

Back in 2012 I paid well over blue book on my 54k mile 08 6mt Ti Avant. I didn’t get an amazing deal but I felt the cost was fair given the rarity and that fact it ticked all the most important boxes on my list.

I have this exact spec AR, and am using these wheels for winter too. I installed ECS 12.5mm spacers/bolts all around for a flush look and no rubbing. Raised the car as well, and I'm now just under 27" FTG with a 245/40/19 tire. 15mm would add a small bit of poke however may introduce rubbing as well - depending FTG measurements and tire specs. EDIT: The car looks lower in person than the photos make it seem too, btw. Sorry for the photo blast:

@boyracer4 , yeah where did you find this deal?

Back 8 years ago we all got our Audi Magnaflow performance exhaust system for $550 shipped USD from Performancepeddler.com Can't believe the same system for 10-15 year old cars are over $1,000 now. What a disgrace! @magnaflow

Finally finished the lowering of the avant with H&R/ Bilstein setup... looks and drives great.

Started installing new front Brembo rotors and Akebono pads. Previous owner must of really torqued the T55 bolts on the caliper, holy crap. Can't get the driverside off. Plus, what is with the B7 front calipers having to split them in two? I miss how easy the B6 and B8 S4 rotors are to do pad changes.

Next up, ordering Oil Filter Housing and parts to do that job since it just started leaking. #neverending

Charles.waite
11-24-2018, 08:58 AM
Don’t split them in two. Don’t follow that DIY. You replace them the same way you do you b6 brakes. Remove the two slider pins from the back and lift the caliper off. Those T55s aren’t supposed to be removed, hence being really hard to get off.

Unfortunately, no more wagons for me for the foreseable future. My wife and I share our vehicles and it's been her turn to get "her" car for a long time. Last year she said I had 3 Audi's in the garage and she had zero lol. Although she loved driving my avant and also enjoys the Q7, she really wants a sports sedan. My turn to take over duty of the 3rd row family hauler for a while as I don't want to have 3 vehicles anymore. Good news is I'll get to take her car out once or twice a week to enjoy something sportier.

The 5 series are what we were looking at lol. Maybe the 6's. Oh man. I am nervous to jump brands as Audi has treated us extremely well, just bored and looking for a new flavor. I have a lot of research to do. If the bimmer doesn't seem like a good option, she will likely get either the 3.0T S4 or A6.

Lol! Don't fret, just educate yourself and you won't get caught off guard. I knew what I was getting into and simply found we prefer the audi brand...I am actually looking to dump the 535 for an a6 avant (2009-2011) with the 3.0t.

(Such a beautiful pic, I know)

Got my VW Daytonas straightened and my 225/40 Hakka R3s mounted and installed on the car. The Hakkas are definitely quieter than my Sumitomo summers, but I’m pretty sure most tires are quieter than them.

This being my first Winter Tire experience, there’s an odd noise coming from them when I turn past 50% or so. They’re not rubbing so maybe it’s just tread noise, but it’s definitely odd. Is that somewhat normal with taller softer tread blocks on winter tires?

So far I’ve not faced any real winter weather, though it was 34° for my commute this morning and they handled totally fine on the cold roads. My summers would have been hockey pucks.

I have Sumitomo HTR Z III summers - is that what you have? They are great overall for the price but yeah seems like they might just be a noisy-ish tire.

I'm also on 225/40 winter tires with spacers and there definitely no rubbing or unusual sounds... perhaps someone else here might have more insight to what the cause could be. Are the tires new?

The same, haha. Yea they’re as good as it gets from a bang for your buck perspective but probably not as refined as the Pilot Supersports but for half the cost they are really solid performers.

And the tires are used but I got them from a friend who put maybe 3-4K miles on them on his wife’s BMW and then traded it in so they’re quite new. I don’t think it’s anything wrong with the tires but who knows...

I think that sound is normal...Soft tread compound and large tread blocks will give ya that noise when ya turn and the weight transfers.

Wonder if I still B5 front spring perches. If I do I’ll send them up and ditch the donk status

Charles.waite
12-04-2018, 11:31 PM
I actually already have some b5 perches but suspension work is a distant second on my list after the engine replacement and subsequent tune, so it’ll likely not happen until next spring or summer when the weather gets better.

At close to 100k I’m looking at new control arms, suspension bushings (poly bushings where applicable), strut mounts and possibly Bilstein B8 struts. I have some Intrax lowering springs I’ll likely throw on as well. Just unsure if I want to do the springs and perches or just try the springs first and see how they settle out.

Could also have been me he was referring to - my rear suspension is sagging quite a bit even with nothing in the trunk. I haven't noticed any issues with handling/going over bumps though. Its the original sport suspension with 225,000+ km so I'm about ready to replace them with either the Bilstein B8/H&R combo or the Vogtland Jr Cup Kit.

It’s like a deep “chunkachunkachunka”. Like a very low frequency “card in the spokes” type of noise. I guess I was curious if it’s a tread noise. Since it never made the noise until these new wheels/tires went on, my guess is it’s just the tread blocks but I figured I’d ask.

Oh damn, yea yours is worse than mine. An extra 130k will do that though. Honestly we both have lots of reverse rake, mine is just somewhat cargo induced, but the unladen reverse rake is pretty noticeable also.

Do the B8/H&R kit. Best thing I’ve ever done to my Avant, the ride quality is night and day over our stock sport suspension.

Intrax springs without perches should be perfect. Not too low in the front so you’re cutting every driveway at a 20* angle to avoid scraping

Sounds like soft tread but have you double checked your tire pressures?

I haven’t but that’s a good idea. The shop that installed them recommended 38psi so I’ll double check with my digital pressure gauge today, assuming the batteries aren’t dead.

Finally posting in the Avant section!

Currently putting together a B5 S4 Avant in silver (the fastest color).

Today I put the injectors in and my Vogtland coilovers I just picked up.

Will be putting the Downpipes and buttoning up repairing one cracked spider hose... too cold to move them around!

Having fun!

yeah, they are more yellow than amber. the instruction manual says 3000K.. so yes. yellow IIRC my temperature scale.
grills:
http://www.urotuning.com/Audi-B8-A4-S4-RS4-Replica-Fog-Light-Grilles-Gloss-p/gr-aua4b80-fv.htm

bulbs:

https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/front-fog-light-bulb/h11-led-fanless-headlight-conversion-kit-with-adjustable-color-temperature-and-compact-heat-sinks-5000-lumensset/4445/9995/?make=7&model=1849&scc_id=1393&year=2010

they have another set that does both yellow and white, but I use my fogs as cornering lights, so it would constantly be switching between white and yellow... which i didn't want.

https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/front-fog-light-bulb/h9h11-dual-color-led-headlight-conversion-kit-w-fog-light-function-whiteyellow-4500-lumensset-fanless/5123/11670/?make=7&model=1849&scc_id=1393&year=2010

obviously you'll have to apply your year/bulb combination too links are for 2010 B8.

I took a few more steps to completing my ideal/dream infotainment set up in my b7 avant.

A couple months ago I bought a super clean a3 mk2 rns-e from a local forum member:

108003

I had settled on this unit thinking I would never find a North American unit with “RFSL” enabled to allow for rear view cam operation. Only a few very early TT and A3 units have these.

Yesterday, I got a hit on one of my saved eBay searches for mk2 RNS-e. RFSL!!! But man this thing is trashed. The plan is to harvest it for its hardware innards and use the face/screen/buttons of my perfect unit.

108005

108006

108008

So, following this DIY, I found some of the remaining parts to enable a RVC with MK2 RNS-e. So pumped!!

https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/265957-RNS-E-amp-Rear-View-Camera

Q7 handle and camera. I suspect a lot of these Q7 TDIs are getting stripped and scrapped. There were a lot of these on eBay. Fraction of the price of new from Audi:

108009

Kufatec bits to get the OEM rear cam to work with the RNS-e.

Picture edit: (also have oem wheels back on as my rotiform blq’s were bent to all hell and buying new tires was cheaper in 17” than 18” lol

This is the exact setup that I’ve been running for the past 12k miles. Compliant but not harsh, if bouncy, only at parking lot speeds. I’m running 255/35/20 in the summer. I installed the RSB before the coils and it made quite a difference flattening the car out in turns.
I spoke to guys at Actuning and they said the rears max out at 26.5 putting the fender at the top of the tire. I wanted some adjustability to account for settling, and loading the rear seats with full sized people. I added the 30mm spacers and set to 26.9. These have settled about 4/10 inch and drop another when fully loaded.

Nice, I’m stoked to install them next weekend. Also just purchased a CR15 brace, so I should be all dialed in soon. I’m shooting for 27” FTG with the 30mm coil spacer and going from there. I have the same summer setup on 20x9.5 et28, with a 12mm wheel spacer in the rear which was nicely flush on stock height.
I’ve heard some with coilover setups experience clunks in the suspension when turning at parking lot speeds, do you get those? Any way to amend that?

I have the CR15 too, added it at the same time as everything else so I cannot speak to the effect. I can say though once the coils and Bar are on anything that will mitigate body flex is welcome.

Now...to your question. I had thought I was tracking down sway bar noises, I added Moog end links, but now think that it might be coil bind. Only happens on uneven surfaces when turning....like into my driveway. There is a thread about PSS10s doing the same so it seems to be related to the shorter progressive coil...Either lubing with lithium grease or there are coil sleeve/wraps that help. As for the end links....unless yours are worn out I would stick with stock...replace the hardware. While these are composite I’ve never heard of a single failure.

Also installed a APR downpipe, R8 coils, new plugs, and a turbo muffler delete. Will be doing APR Stage 2 tune next week.

Question: for those with ST Coilovers; i am having an issue adjusting the rears. When I turn the rear adjuster with the supplied spanner wrench, the whole upper mount turns and it doesn't raise/lower. Anyone come across this and have a decent solution?

You have to use a hex or allen socket, I forget in the center of the perch to stabilize it while you adjust with the spanner. I forget what size of socket but you should be able to either fit it through the spring or from the bottom assuming the perch is at the top

Yes, on top.

It’s a 10mm hex on my vogtlands.

Stance will look great with some spacers on the Oem wheels. I have 12/20mm F/R on mine but it rubs in the back on deep dips in the road. I just need to trim the rear inner fender and it should be good. May be able to get 15-17mm spacer in the back without adjustment. [emoji1360]
Note: These are 18 inch a5 wheels with et29, which didn’t rub. I rub with the allroad et26 wheels.

Got the APR Stage 2 tune. Went from stock straight to Stage 2 because I found a great deal on a used APR HFC/downpipe. Man, what a difference. This is how it should have felt from the factory.

Sure makes you realize how un-sporty our transmissions are though. I have a TTS (Stage 1) and S3 (Stage 3+), both with DSG and the difference is very apparent.

Looking forward to my first tank of E85 to see how that goes.

I used to feel this way until I drove a PDK car. It opened my eyes. A tuned DSG is on par with the Italian exotics (I used to be an exotic supercar experience instructor). You should drive one just for the experience.

Man I really hope I have time tomorrow to switch to summer mode. These winters are garbage above 40°. Unfortunately we just got 2cu.yds. of soil to reseed the lawn so I’ll be wheelbarrowing dirt all day...

About 4.5 hours of pain.

It’s not 100% perfect but overall I’m pretty happy with the result

Tossed on the rack and bike.

Decided I don't feel like doing my spring tune up on it this year lol. Took it to a shop. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190409/384c65920d445f83a383b1134b48cbbd.jpg

Test fit the new Avant Garde 19x9.5" rims with 255/40/19 continentals. Waiting on the brown truck to deliver my spacers and correct lug bolts.

The truck/cargo van rentals from Home Depot are a lifesaver. For the $20 rental fee it's well worth not mucking up the Allroad. 14' studs just barely fit in the cargo van. 16' unfortunately would not have.

I always love the reactions of the workers at the lumber yard when you roll up in an avant and stack a few hundred lbs of 2x4s on the roof.

Spring cleaning today - rinseless wash, and finally installed the summer set!! First time seeing them since I put the Vogtland Coilovers on. Ride height is about 27 1/4” all around. It increased by almost a 1/2 inch just by changing the wheels from oem to the 20 inch set [emoji50].

Thanks! They are Forgestar F14 20x9.5 et25 with the deep concave setup. No spacers yet but the rear could prolly use 8mm to flush them up good. [emoji1362]

It was yesterday, but I put on a set of 19x9.5 BBS Ti CH-R et35 with Conti DWS06 255/35. These will be next year's winter wheels, but my summers need some work done so I'm riding these for now until they're ready.

This is with the rear full of my OEM wheels. Still working on ride height. I can tinker with it since it's on air.
