Got it back after 5 days at the dealer. 35k service and then they had to track down a noise and get audi authorization to fix it since car wasn't throwing any codes. Luckily I had recorded the noise to show them because at first they couldn't recreate it.
Turned out to be the auxiliary coolant pump

Finally got around to snapping a few photos of the piano black trim I recently installed in my allroad in place of the fine grain ash natural brown wood inlays and trim. The piano black MMI and instrument surround was already installed in the car.

Nice touch. Looks clean and classy. I went with carbon atlas in the end, but my 2 other top picks were brushed aluminum or piano black.

Wtf really? Not the steering wheel part but the rest of it. It smelled as soon as I opened the box. Be careful.

I sourced both the trim and the fbsw from the forum. The trim is OEM out of a totalled S4. The fbsw is an S Line with perforated air leather. Came out of a members S4 he upgraded. It was the first thing I purchased for the AR. Missed the fbsw from my mk6 R too much, needed it!

Saw a very nice red RS5 the other day with the white letter tires . I personally love that look . Maybe I am just old.. my mustang has always had bfg rwl tires. So I bought the kit from tire stickers .com
Some will hate it I am sure . I think it looks good . I loaded the car onto the transporter last night and shipped it out to Spokane, WA to the new owner. I'm sad to see it go, but glad to know it is going to another Audizine member and someone who is going to enjoy it as much as I did.

I'll be posting a few items I have left in the next day or two so you haven't gotten rid of me just yet.

Hate is a strong word. I do, however, race cars and have a policy. Nobody gets on my race car without bringing something to the project. Money or product or something of value. Helping Michelin sell tires when they don't provide you discount or services in return is giving them what they don't need. Help selling their tires.

I didn't really look at it like that. Point taken. A good one at that.
I am not a race car driver just an old gear head .
I have always liked that look of the larger white letter tires on certain cars. For instance the big lettered Goodyear wlt on a 427 cobra. Or the smaller wlt Goodyear polyglass tires on 69 boss 429, 70 big block cuda..
To me it's a look. No more no less.

Yes that's correct, it's the new Thule Motion XT alpine, i'm using the Thule aeroblade edge bars on it. I haven't tried the moonroof to see if it will contact the bars or clamps.

Just a warning the Box is a little long, so when you open the trunk it will contact the back part of the box. I guess it's fine as long as you don't swing the trunk up at full force.

Allthea
11-09-2017, 01:06 PM
I'm picking up some AeroBlade Edge bars tonight. Given it's an automatic trunk it'll bump it. I know there's a way to set the maximum height on it, though, so I guess I could set it down a little bit.

I'll be interested to hear if the clamping system gets in the way of the moonroof. I use mine frequently, but I guess more so in the summer.

Nothing special but at least accomplished. Replaced rear hatch struts (easiest fix to date) and replaced broken inner headlight locator tab on radiator support (major pita!), but very much worth it to not have my headlight shaking and flickering.

Also replaced passenger front wheel bearing earlier in week. Been driving around with it howling at me for much longer than I care to admit. Way beyond time to replace. allroad is smooth and quiet again [emoji106]

Polished and waxed it. At some point I'm going to have to get a full paint correction but it looks decent. Previous owner didn't do at good job of taking care of the paint. At all.

Lookin' purdy!!! Would you mind posting the part# and where you bought them? I think my coils need some refreshing. I washed her up on Sunday but really need to find a good detailer so I can line them up for a full paint correction/polish come Spring.

I just ordered a set from fcpeuro they have a lifetime warranty on EVERYTHING they sell. Including oil, brake pads, plugs, coils etc. If it ever wears out they replace it for free. They will even replace the oil when you do an oil change.

I ordered from DYC and used 1 1/4 can of graphite per wheel doing it with the wheels off. On the glossifier I just did the outside of the wheels. They send you ample cans of both in the kit I had 1 can of Graphite and 1 can of gloss left.

Yes, I ordered from DYC. I used three cans of the dip, but probably should have used them all. One coat of glossifier. Pretty simple just be sure to watch plenty of videos. I also did it with the wheels off. First coat should be very very light. After that, lay down nice and even “wet coats ”. I also sprung for the little contraption that lets you hold the can like a gun. Far more comfortable. Also, I did it when it was kind of cold outside. Expect longer dry times. Make sure you warm the cans up in hot water so they spray nice and even.

I'm liking the dark peelers with your color combo - looks good. As far as the box, the farther forward you move your cross bars, the more it should help with the reverse rake of your roof box.

It hurt my fingers getting it off but was pretty straightforward. Definitely easier once you've done it once. Then there are just two connectors to disconnect. Check out the diy in the b8 forum or watch a couple of videos on youtube. I didn't need to Vagcom anything since the new wheel had all the same functions/buttons as my original wheel

Recent "cold" (for the west coast) weather made me replace the battery and hood strut. Took 30 min for the battery and 5 min for the strut. The battery was on its last legs, with next to no reserve power and struggling to start the car on recent colder mornings even though it is garaged. Strut went from working fine to not at all which is a bit weird. Glad it didn't fail with my head under the hood!

Software tune. It's not in my sig, but I have an APR tune (guess I can add it now). Apparently Audi actually flagged it after I had them replace my secondary water pump back in October (dealer had to send them a scan because it wasn't throwing codes and problem was intermittent). New pump was making the same noise so I had them also look at it which is when they told me I was TD1. First one they covered, but this one was out of pocket. Talked to the service manager and he legitimately seemed upset that I got flagged, but oh well, it is what it is. He cut me a bit of a deal on the new pump so i had them go ahead and replace it.

As for the recall, it was just a hardware swap (believe my car had the software update previously before I was the owner), so my tune was fine.

I understand he's denied for warranty because of having a tuned car (engine). My disbelief, or question, is that they're denying warranty on a water pump replacement because the engine is tuned. I would have thought they would only deny warranty to the engine due to an engine tune, or suspension due to suspension being modified, etc. Meaning, they deny warranty only on the part that was modified, not the entire car.

To give a more obvious example, it's like saying they deny warranty on your seat heater because your engine is tuned.

Aux water pump. Yeah. They are claiming the tune is making it run longer because the turbo runs hotter. I do think it is BS. Need to read my warranty book. I think I'm forced to arbitrate with them. Might also check out the FTC and see how hard it is to file a complaint. On one hand I can see why the extra heat could overwork it. But I can see plenty of other thinks that could cause overheating and excess heat pump operation on a totally stock engine.

It seems pretty damn flimsy on the dealer. I get that you could fry a piston or damage engine internals when tuned, but some random accessory? Yea I don’t see it.

Yea. Its shitty they can unilaterally revoke a warranty on a whole slew of components without any sort of arbitration or investigation or even any proof on their part other than “your ECU has been flashed by a third party”. Definitely verges on the illegal IMO.

People love to cry Magnusson-Moss, but it's actually really easy: Audi is offering a warranty provided that you operate the vehicle within the specifications they designed it to operate. If you modify it to operate outside of those specifications, you've broken your end of the warranty agreement. No, it's not illegal for them to void your warranty if you modify your car. Sorry, it's just not.

Simply put: You can have a tune or a warranty but not both. Pay to play.

oatzel

It was AoA that flagged it not the dealer. The dealer frankly was fine with it but once AoA flags it the dealer's hands are tied.

I'm a big boy and can live without the warranty, but I don't necessarily agree with the blanket voiding of the warranty and don't think it's as cut and dry as dropshadow makes it out to be.

As I said I will think about it and look at my options.

Does the warranty fine print actually say that, or is that just assumed? My biggest issue is with the blanket void, which is what Magnusson-Moss is supposed to protect against. A tune didn't make your seat heaters fry. It didn't fuck up your headlight auto level. It didn't break _____. If you blew a turbo because your tune requested too much boost, of course it's not AoA's job to cover it. But that's the point, cause and effect. If the tune is not the cause of the failure then it should be replaced. I think too many people are just accepting it and not fighting because they don't think it's worth their time/effort/money. But I wish more people would as I feel most people are getting screwed by it

I'm a big boy and can live without the warranty, but I don't necessarily agree with the blanket voiding of the warranty and don't think it's as cut and dry as dropshadow makes it out to be.

Exactly. Personally I think most people put too much stock into a warranty, and most of us are more than capable of fixing things ourselves. But if you have it then it's nice to have the option to use it if you wish. Especially for chronic issues

I have never had a warranty except on my q5 and I treat it as a security blanket and it makes the wife feel more comfortable spending the amount of money we did on it. My b6 and b7 had/have no warranties whatsoever. Frankly I think they’re sorta pointless if you know how to turn wrenches but that’s me.

I think recalls and extended warranites (Audi’s version of a recall) on specific manufacturer defects like cam followers on the b7 are absolutely necessary and manufacturers need to be held accountable for design/manufacturing defects.

I still think the TD1 shenanigans are shady and there should be ample recourse for the consumer to dispute the designation when its used as a reason to deny warranty claims.

A TD1 flag voids your powertrain warranty, not your bumper-to-bumper coverage.

Where it gets messy is when a dealer manually flags your car TD1 because you replaced your stock suspension with coilovers. Audi's scan tool automatically flags a car when it's scanned and detects an ECU tune, that's out of the dealer's control. If a dealer manually flags you, that's a dealer being shitty.

I assume he’s aware of that but his example sorta makes me think otherwise (Pat, you’re a dummy!).

However voiding the ENTIRE Powertrain warranty due to an ECU tune? I think they need to be very specific about, and should prove in court, which components are subject to undue wear because of the chip.

And Auxiliary water pump really doesn’t seem like something that is going to suffer because you have 20% more power than stock...

I suspected as much, but was also partially being facetious. Like you, never had a warranty on the B7 plus that was pre-TD1 days

Agreed 100%. Audi has been frying aux water pumps since at least the B5 S4 days, usually due to poor design (of course the valley of a hot ass 2.7 is a great place for a water pump). Tune had nothing to do with that.

Charles.waite
01-11-2018, 10:22 AM
Exactly. Plenty of stock components fail early on stock engines under normal operating conditions. TD1 is just a mechanism to easily deny Powertrain warranty work and letting AoA foot the blame and allow the dealers to appear sympathetic and that things are out of their hands.

Not today but about a week ago. Managed to hit the hatch release while the car was parked in the garage. Car was too close to the door so it couldn't open all the way.

Opened garage door and one of the hinges caught on the hatch denting and scratching the hatch and actually ripping the garage door off its bracket.

Gotcha! They look good.

I put a new RS4 style grill in my car today. This was after hitting a fata$$ rabbit last week and putting a hairline crack in the one that was in it.

I also change the oil & filter and ran codes & reset the service interval with the Ross-Tech. Rotated the tires. Replaced the 2 rearmost muffler hangers as I cracked the original ones when I did the Billy Boats exhaust install a year or so ago. They were being held together with some zip ties and I figured it was time.

Then I finally installed my GFB DV+ (after 1-1/2 years of owning it)...man, that was easy as hell. Thought it was going to be a nightmare.

I also got my Q5 Brembo’s back from powdercoat & hope to put them on tomorrow. I already have the S4 brakes front & rear, so this should be pretty straight forward.

Anybody need some Brilliant Blue front S4 calipers and damn near new Red Stuff red pads?

Got it back from the body shop this past weekend. Had a minor paint trade with someone who cut me off so they had to repaint the front bumper, replace driver's side flare, and replace the matte lower part of the bumper because the lower part of the driver's side flare was also scuffed and the bottom part of the bumper and that small flare section are all one piece.

While it was in had them do a full detail, swap to yellow LED fog light bulbs (iJDMtoy), and install a rear bumper cover piece from NGP. They did the fogs and rear bumper cover as part of the work. Need to get pics while it's still in it's detailed glory, but it's been raining since the day after I got it.

Thanks. Had the crazy idea late one night to replace the floor mats but I think that would be taking it too far and look tacky.

Changed the oil filter housing assembly, washed it, and installed some whispbars I scored on ebay for $45.

Also, does anyone know why the rear turn signals are so prone to throwing a bulb out light? I've cleaned the harness connectors and added some dielectric grease, so hopefully it'll stop. But there is one pin in each harness that had some corrosion, which I'm assuming was the turn signal pin. How does only one pin get corroded?

Allthea

Are you using a clean, lint free cloth to hold the bulb when you install? If you touch it with your skin, it leaves oils and makes a hot spot.

I haven't even had to touch/change the bulb, the bulb out light came on even though the signal bulb still worked. Happened on both sides.

Yea I’ve had that happen on my b7 on both sides. I just put dielectric in the connector and it hasn’t come back.

I should add, it was so bad on the drivers side though I had to get a whole new housing because the corrosion caused the pin to spark and melt so there was no connection at all. Luckily the body harness plug was okay, a little meaty but it still works fine. I packed a ton of dielectric in and had issues for a couple days, but I just had to reseat the connector a handful of times to get the grease off the pins and it’s been perfect ever since.

I had a similar experience. Cleaned the pins, added dielectric, and then on the way to the parts store to drop off used oil, bulb out light came on again. I unplugged and reseated the connector and warning light was off. Hopefully it holds up now.

I also might have greatly underestimated the installation difficulty given the specialty parts needed. I guess time will tell. [wrench]

Completed the KW v2 installation over the weekend. As expected, it took a really, really, long time - however looks great. Alignment on Thursday and I'll wait for them to settle before lowering/raising or changing stiffness.

It came with one, but it felt like it was going to fall out. The OEM grill is growing on me, no gaps, and fits tight. 50/50 if it will stay that way, haven't decided. Strangely kind of like the way it looks... Cheap and easy enough to swap.

No spoiler yet. Going to body shop on the way home from work today to discuss mounting options. By this coming weekend for sure!

Parked in a parking lot eating my lunch. See a guy behind my car in middle of lot stalled and unable to move his car. Try to rack up some Karma points so I help him push his truck into an open spot which happens to be next to my car. He gets his going and backs out, but immediately starts turning while backing... Wheel tire and rear bumper looked a little too complacent in life. Super happy he helped me shake things up. :-(

Young kid maybe 20 had a valid insurance card with a different name on it. I'm assuming it's his father so hopefully Progressive comes through. I asked him to file the claim ASAP yesterday at noon and when I called Progressive at 6 p.m. he hadn't yet done it. I called him and he said he was waiting to talk to his father but at least his number was legit so fingers crossed
