....nah, not as bad as the noggy one I had a year or two ago that was burned/melted on the top corner from where the car caught fire [:D]

and really that's the nice thing about the alcantara centers. New material can be had fairly cheap then just find a decent shop to get them put in and you're good to go. It'd be a nice way to get a cheap set of Black/black alcantara seats

On Sunday replaced coolant flange as well as a bunch of other crusy, leaky hoses. When bleeding the system I came across this near the heater core hoses. Can anyone tell me what this is for? Not sure if I accidentally popped it off of something while pulling off the heater hose. Tried to search about it but nothing coming up with my search descriptions.

That may plug into your battery near the top, I know my battery had some kind of hose pushed into it similar to that, not sure it was acting as a drain for water or what. When I replaced my battery the new one did not have a place to plug that hose into so I just left it.

It's a vent. Your new battery doesn't need it because it's sealed.

Okay thanks fellas. I was worried that it may be part of the brake booster system.
On another note, I got an Omori boost gauge coming in the mail and today I started to cut and fab up an MK5 driver side vent pod from ebay ($18) to fit my b6 driver side vent. More photos soon to come....

Not today, but yesterday I swapped back to my summer wheels (OEM S-Line) from my winter wheels (B5 Sport Package). It's always so much of a transformation....
I'll be needing rear brakes over the summer and both rear outer cv boots are lacking clamps (on the inside) on the axle shafts so looks like I'll swap those later this year too...just looked it up, doesn't look like there's a clamp on the inside. I can't think it's normal for them to spit grease out of there though...

Also added up all the receipts for swapping the used motor in.... It was hard to not count the regular service items so it's all lumped together.
Full timing belt service, t-stat housing, rear coolant flange, exhaust studs/nuts/gaskets, turbo return-line gaskets/washers, intake manifold gasket, new injector seals/orings (rail side), new cam follower/hpfp oring, new oil/filter, a/c recharge, p/s fluid, brake fluid, misc req'd hardware...
For a total of around $3350, not counting a few extra tools I bought, the lunches I bought for the guys that helped me out (who were pretty awesome), and the front brakes I replaced then too... Also did a carbon clean on the motor before putting it in.. Didn't grab a picture of the after but did of the before...These are were the 2 worst.
Motor had 82K miles (a 2008 BWT)

I have a bumper respray most likely soon [:(]..it's a crappy pic (and a dirty car from a snowy drive skiing this weekend) but this spot is the clear coat bubbling/soon to peel away..it was the tiniest puncture-like dent sometime ago, I guess water started to get in there..

More like a refresh.

I need to flush my coolant and replace my tank since there are noticeable stress/wear on the tank itself. I was also looking at picking up some check valves and doing the PM; it's the new trending topic in our forum [:D].

Lastly, my exhaust hangers need to be replaced. Right side is hanging by a bolt since my inner hulk overtorqued one of the bolts.

I did a little plasti dip on my two "silver" plastic dash pieces that surround the gauge cluster and screen. It doesn't look as nice in the pics but it turned out much better than I expected and in now frames the gauges and screen a lot better in my opinion. I know it isn't the same as the piano black trim BUT for $12 vs close to $900 I can make due until I decide to spend the money for the "real" thing. I might add some polyurethane to give it a glossier look that the plasti gloss finish doesn't give.

It looks a lot better in person and I just tried the plasti dip to see how it would look without ruining the actual pieces with spray paint. I like it enough that I am going to apply some poly to it to see how it comes out and if I don't like it I just peel it off. Thanks for your opinion though. FYI I didn't even know what plasti dip was until I saw it on youtube. Granted I wouldn't do this to my C63 AMG.

Yeah but those mount to these little pins in the window frame that you wont have unless you already had the shades stock. I tried pulling them off another door and they just snapped like any other plastic piece I touch. Those little 3M hooks with the sticky stuff on them should serve the same purpose though I would think.

According to ETKA it just mounts directly to the frame with a self tapping screw. Additionally there is only 1 set of frames available for the avant. No specification of with/without sunshades. If I remember later on I'll try and look at ours and see how the hooks mount to the frame

AudiTLC
04-10-2014, 03:01 PM
The hooks mount to the frame w/ self tapping screws. very simple.
I was lucky, the guy gave me the frames w/ hooks in them too, so I have a guide to go by.

The door panels are different. The tweeter mount is clocked to clear the roller and that upper area is a bit different.
Other than that, the panels are identical.
The metal frame underneath the door panel is actually scooped out to clear the roller on non-shade cars.

this black foam has a 90º cut to clear the roller. You just have to exacto trim the non-shade foam a tiny bit.
also notice the metal frame is already scooped out for the roller (on non-roller cars too).

correction, cars.

and it might have been easier (and I was trying to) but ultimately it would have been a pain in the ass and I think I did it the best way possible. I had no (cheap/easy) way to get the cars just over 100 miles back to my town and then I had nowhere to put them. Plus once I saw how wrecked the other parts car was I really didn't want to bother with the two shells. Basically I stripped 2 B6 S4's in this guy's driveway over 3 weekends and just took home everything as it came off the car, 1 load each day. Once I had the complete drivetrain pulled from the 2nd car I got a Uhual to get it all back. Now everything is sitting in my storage locker except for that motor. I brought it home last night since it's kind of like my prize for all the work I've done.

BCsniper

no plans really. It'll be more like an un-build. I'm basically just planning on tinkering around. I'd like to grab a boroscope and get a look at the cylinder walls, then I'm planning on removing the rear covers to get a look at the timing system. If the motor is in good shape and I feel like making the investment I may hit up JHM to see if they'll let me buy one of the Beta Timing Kits they're working on. That way if/when I do sell the engine it will be refreshed and ready to go. This is all a long way out though since I need to get started working on selling all the stuff I have in storage right now.

BCSniper,
That is really cool! If I had the motivation, rebuilding a v8 on a motor stand would be a fun project.
You could look at improving weak spots and just getting really familar with it would be fun.

You should beef up the internals and swap in your car.

Well another little update for my A4....

Yesterday

-Ordered these eBay control arms, my friend Matt who owns Woffard's European (http://www.woffordseuropeancar.com/) and I decieded if they last 6 months its almost worth trying them. I had a coupon code so my out the door price was $111.92 FREE SHIPPING [drool] in other words... DIRT CHEAP for a full front control arm kit with all bolts/hardware

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231103917697

So I will definitely post back with my review, if any body that needs control arms for B5 wants to go the cheapest option out there haha

Those will be installed within an week or two when we do my coilovers as well, Im getting anxious, Im sick of stock 4x4 mode!

I have some cheap Nankangs on the s-line style wheels, 225/40/18

Soo... Any tips for my upcoming B5 FMIC install?

I think I'm just going to pipe into the turbo outlet hose, swing around to the front, through the IC, then back around and into the throttle inlet hose. My FMIC has 2.5" inlet/outlet. I believe the stock turbo outlet hose is 2" if I'm not mistaken? Would it be better to use 2" piping and then use a silicone reducer/expander 2 - 2.5 at the inlet/outlet? Or use 2.5" piping and expand/reduce at the turbo outlet hose and throttle inlet hose?

I think the width and offset will help him though. Were yours 19x9 et32? Mine were and I was also rubbing terribly (since I kept the 255 tires) and it was way too much to deal with, plus they are as heavy as boat anchors. 19" Peeler plus a roofbox mean you're losing like 4mpg or more. I did a roadtrip up to the mtn's and got like 13-14mpg cruising up the highway.

Finally got my motor mounts and 034 HFC installed today. Just confirmed that the low tone rattling was coming from the stock cat. The media inside was all loose. What a difference the high flow cat provides. Butt dyno tells me there is a bit or power added. Currently have Revo stage 1. [drive]
Next up will be my CiM boost gauge on driver side vent then stage 2 with the 380cc injectors! [:D]

Having a slight bumper fitment issue. It goes on, but bulges out underneath the headlights. Not sure why. I can see anything hitting or rubbing. Zipties fixed it for now because I needed to get to work, but I gotta figure that shit out this week.

Was a pain in the ass to get the trim pieces to stay in place without any mounting brackets. Just found out that there are some brackets that go behind the trim that didn't show on the GAP site. I JB Welded for nothing ><.

Now my delema is whether to do a B8 S4 brake and rotor upgrade(getting a good deal) or spend the money on Bilstein/H&R suspension.

Thanks, it was my first time doing a great job. I'd been polishing and washing my cars wrong for over 20 years lol. I used Mequires 105 for compound, Meguires 205 for polishing and Mequires sealant. I bought a Harbor Freight Dual Action Polisher but upgraded the backing place with an Astro brand one and used Chemical Guys Pads. I'm also going to be using a foam wand, two bucket/multi mitt and two bucket washing method to keep my paint in good shape.

I watched a bunch of vids- I found this one to be the most beneficial. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0rbZOeNN4o&list=PLLLqBfp0w0bpyI8IrrLVTr3z-y_QS89tL&feature=share&index=3 If you can tolerate TheJunkman, his vids are super detailed and informative. With dual actions polishers and mild compound it's nearly impossibly to ruin paint.

What were your thoughts on the HF polisher? Worked great, I figure I'll realistically use it 6-10 times a year and it paid for itself with this weekend's job. Guys on the Autogeek detail forums suggest putting in a different grease to quiet it down. I've had zero problems with HF stuff, one of the best purchases I have ever made is a $40 electric impact I've had for six year and have used countless times.

Looks like i am going to need to pick one up this week. Thanks dude. Find a coupon before you do, I had a 25% off from one of the many mags I get, it was around $50. I bought the pads and everything else from Amazon, and I found the backing plate on Ebay. People had complained about the stock HF backing plate tearing up pads, so I bought the Astro which was reccomended. I used the HF backing plate on Friday and the Astro one came in Sat mail, honestly I really can't tell a difference between the two.

Problem is the Euro DTM bumper is only being sold by 2 different sites. Both of which will charge you over $1300 shipped to your door. That doesn't include painting and installing. I just bit the bullet and bought everything from GAP since it saved me so much more money. With all the parts, paint, color matching the bumper, trim, cap and side markers, I still paid less than $1300 which gave me enough to get an RS4 type grille.

Custom made my mounting brackets for the side markers so they would sit flush with the bumper. The OEM brackets would cost more and it would sit about 2mm outside of the bumper.

Looks good but for what you spent on having everything done you should have molded the sidemarkers into the bumper. It wouldn't be difficult and it would look exactly like a Euro bumper.

I wanted to get them shaved. I was quoted $400 more to shave them properly. So I am waiting for my brother in law to have some time to do it for me for free. Or at least show me. Would love to figure it out and help everyone who wants it done for them.

Wow, that's more than I would expect. I'm not an expert, but I would think you could maybe plastic weld them in place and then sand/smooth with a little bondo. I know they make a more flexible body filler for plastic bumpers. That's the general idea I have planned for ours. Haven't looked into the details in depth yet. Just high level.

The way we do it at my old shop, like we did my bumper and some of my rs4 stuff is actually using poly urethane blocks, shaving them down to the size of the are you are trying to cover and then fill in the empty space with very light bondo to just fills the gaps a little.

Evil1 you live like right down the street from me, why don't you ever take advantage of it? $400 extra to do that is nuts especially if they were already going to paint that portion.

I was actually going to ask you about this since I know you did body work. So basically instead of molding the reflector in, you filled it with the poly and then skimmed & blended it with bondo? Did you plastic weld them in place at all? I was wondering if that would help reduce flexing & be less likely to crack

I was told the bondo will crack when flexed. So it wasn't the top choice.

I didn't know you knew how to man. I never knew you were into fabrication. Should have told me :P. I was told by the body shop that they would lay out fiber glass over the hole. 4 layers or so, then fill in the hole with some sort of glue or filler, sand it down....etc. Thats why it was more trouble and priced higher. They said it would be the best bet for flexibility.

$400 really isn't that high for the work involved. Even at Maaco, just painting that panel is going to be $250. It ranges ~$150-$250 depending on color, darker is more expensive.

JHM tuned my avant this afternoon [drive]

it's about time with all the years/miles I've done in B6 S4's. Very happy with it, but I still need to get down the process for Launch Assist better. All I got in my first couple tries was squat, plop, chug, chugaa, chug and then it takes off and it's time for 2nd (and clutchy smell). I can't get the ECU to hold the revs like I was expecting from the description/video. More tries again this weekend and I'll hopefully have it down.

Happy to hear you finally got it!

Are you coming to a stop, pressing esp button and then putting into first and pinning gas?

I'll flip off the ESP as I roll to a stop, then at launch, yank your foot off of the clutch as quickly as possible!

Nope, never had any of my cars tuned so far. And yes its quicker but I think I'm greedy cause I'd still like a bit more. I've been getting bad ideas about buying Jeffrey146's JHM Nitrous setup he's never installed on the Noggy Avant. I'm pretty sure I'd be content with that and it's actually the best power/$ upgrade for the 4.2

cleaned my headlight housings, cleaned up the inside to make sure ballasts were good and no corrosion etc and that the wiring was still in good order. Clear corner modded my housings. Cleaned and polished my fogs and am about to do 2 layers of yellow fog film over them to give them some yellow love. If they arent bright/yellow enough ill be ordering some PIAA or Nokyo bulbs.

Finally got around to installing the Cupra lip. Also tried to re/re my front bumper to adjust the hood gap but ran into a minor lack of reach with my extensions, will have to just get a flex extension as pointed out in the DIY. Oh well another week with a ridiculous hood gap. At least the dog seems to like the Avant

haven't really had the chance to try it. Early today I wasn't driving long enough to get everything warmed up properly. The rest of the afternoon I was driving my 2 dalmatians around and didn't think they'd appreciate me testing it. I did give it one shot this evening coming back from the humane society since I had read your post. I got more/less the same results, maybe a tad better. I got the rev's to hold steady this time, but I am just getting wheel hop that's keeping me from launching away cleanly.

Whoa. Never heard of a canvas back. Interesting.... My two dogs ensure the back is a constant matte of black and golden fur.

Awesome puppy Shanster! I wish my 5 year old golden was a puppy again. His shenanigans were far cuter when he was a little fluff ball. Now they're just annoying shenanigans, haha.

The quality is very good...made very well. The fit on the side panels is not quite right, but the whole system is very durable. Supplemented with the plastic trunk tray, its will certainly be puppy proof!
