Coils. I just swapped the springs for some more low.

^ that looks real good. So your ST's fit without issues I take it?

Yes sir, and thank you! Need to re-adjust it some more tonight. Lower the front a little more and dump the rear. Need to look into different springs to make the height go a little more lower in the rear as I only have 3 threads left.

How's that bumper guard holding up to your paint job? Reviews I have read indicate these nose bras/guards do damage paint.

It was actually hiding a bit of damage more than creating damage so not really sure, plus I bought the car with it on last weekend and just took it off.

ST's are notorious for not going low enough in the rear, although I was under the impression that it wasn't as bad on the B5's as it is with the B6/B7. Most of us who have swapped out the springs went with Hyperco.

Spent $1,000 on new tires and an alignment, then $1,500 on timing belt kit, valve cover gaskets, ect and a Borla exhaust, then drive it for 2 weeks and then put it up for sale again. Only on quattroworld though, I'm still uneasy about letting it go.

Disagree! I think tint can be classy. 50% on both my Avants. Never any issues, and yet still had a great look, and good performance utilizing ceramics.

you spent all that money on it and trying to sell it again.. what possible could replace your car thats better.... I got into a conversation with a volvo xc70 who really like my audi. This guy wanted to sell too but wanted a truck or a smaller 4 cylinder car. then came up the problems.. our audi's have spoiled us to the point of breaking.. full leather wrapped seats, dual climate control.. quattro... theirs not much on the market that can match this unless your going to go broke doing so...

you have a great car... even the 2007 audi's+ have timing belts.. so that is still going on... a lot of cars have constant maintenance request... a lot of people just don't know about it...

Maybe! I'm just tired of the car I think. In my head I think I just want something new, somewhat sporty, and that I won't have to worry about throwing money at to keep running. It doesn't need 320hp and 400+fl/lb of torque, don't get me wrong having that is awesome, but it's not necessary for me. I hardly ever use all the power and the car pretty much just takes me to and from work, that's about it. I never really give it the beans or do anything fun with it.

Yup, all that money and I still might sell it. Nothing is "better" per-say (and there isn't anything on the market that matches this), this is an amazing car for the price, you can't go wrong with it. I know it needs maintenance and things of that nature, it's a 10 year old German sports wagon afterall! But it's just getting taxing on my mind and my wallet. I certainly wouldn't mind a very specific little 4 cylinder 1.4L turbo car... Great gas and enough spunk/flare to keep me occupied and no issues (or potential issues) to stress me out each time I sit in it.

Yeah, this is the first time I have really gotten a look at the underside of my S since I purchased her last June (I've never been too comfortable putting a car up on jack stands). Definitely going to make a few more repairs, including refreshing some of the paint below.

Thanks! I'm not 100% sold on the idea of gunmetal wheels on a DG B6, trying to think if there is anything else I can change to make it work better, maybe ditch the chrome trim???

after I typed this, I headed off for work, half way there my service engine light came on, and I thought oh christ ,what now???? LOL I checked all the fluids, and vacuum hoses... probably just a temporary error.. like the ecs light coming on , then you restart it and and its gone... you might be right to get a 4 cylinder... something with a timing chain.. LOL

I was thinking of getting a geo tracker 90's version.. at worst a transmission is about 150-170.00 on crags list 1.6 liter engine.. what could go wrong.....

Honestly, I'm not sure for the B5.

B6/B7 use a 2.5" ID spring. Length and rate is up to you (but you'll obviously want to be shorter and stiffer than the ST springs). TJ and I are both using 7" 750lb springs and I'm completely happy with them. A couple others on here are using 6" 900lb springs. I'd say you should try and find out as much as you can about the springs on there now, and go from there

thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Now to be the guinea pig for the B5 Avant I guess haha.

On a good note, I ordered a new fender for the messed up one, ordered an ebay shifter (B&M replica), JHM Delrin Bushing/Solid Shift Linkage, the gaskets for the manifold/turbo to manifold/turbo to cat, an a Alpha-big vag-com cable and the Ross-Tech software. Next up will be an RA4 clutch within the week.

Not today, but yesterday, sort of. Car had been annoying me whilst trying to change the rear brakes, Monday I left work a little early to get home and work on it. Took the stuck caliper off, and finally got it sorted, brakes installed etc (I could probably do with bleeding them some more, pedal feels a little mushy for my liking). So, feeling pretty pleased to finally get my brakes done I go to start it. Nothing. WTF. Damn battery is flat, it had been sitting for almost 4 days, but still.

Charged it for a few minutes to get the engine started, then drove around for a while. Park overnight, go to leave for work the next morning. Dead again. Original battery so I just went ahead and replaced it. Fired right up this morning :)

There has got to be somebody with a B5 that's done it. There are far too many B5's running super low for me to believe you are in uncharted waters. I don't know if he can help, but you can check with Darrick (Capt Obvious). His B5 was running fairly low before he sold it and I'm pretty sure he was on ST's. You can check both the B5A4 & B5S4 sections as I'd be willing to bet that the stock ST springs are the same regardless of whether you have an A or an S.

∧∧∧New B8 Ti Avant looks nice! I would have a hard time parting with a B7 S4 Avant though (especially a white one). Was it a manual or Tip?

Today I re-assembled my cargo area (post Dynamat project). No pics...it really isn't that exciting. It did take me 2-3 hours to get everything back in its place. Got new foam dampening panels from GAP and tidied up all the wiring. I wish I could replace some of the carpeting on the trim panels. Not awful but on a 9 year old car they definitely show signs of wear.

Has anybody ever had these pieces (side panels and spare tire cover) re-carpeted? Looks like it would be a bitch to get the original stuff off.

it was yesterday but my baby came home after getting extensive surgery. Had to rebuild top end and replaced just about everything else "while we were in there". The SSAC cat back sounds fantastic, nice and throaty when cruising and screams when in boost.

LOVE that pic!

How do you like the A4 Avant compared to your S4 Avant? Pros/cons?

I like it, its a whole different car than the S4. After having 2 s4 avants I was just over the entire B6/B7 cars. I needed a wagon and didn't care that it wasn't an S4, the B8 has the GIAC tune, awe exhaust and sway bars so its plenty quick for me. Its much more roomy than the B7 and MPG is light years above my old car. But the main thing is that its new, everything on the S4 seemed so dated to after driving the B8.

Pros:
new
bigger inside
better MPG
no chrome trim

Cons:
Auto
Seats aren't anything to write home about

Today I cut and plugged the vacuum lines to the exhaust diverter valves and pried them open, they had rusted shut and would no longer actuate. They added a little more cabin drone at idle and slightly more exhaust note but not enough to leave me satisfied... a new exhaust must be ordered soon!

I raised it a little - it's funny how a half inch makes a difference (the car rides much smoother and my subframe doesn't hit every little bump in the road).

I also had two random realizations/thoughts today.

1.) It's very common to hear sedan owner's say, "I wish I got an avant", but I can't think of a single time I have heard an avant owner say, "I wish I got a sedan."

2.) I was walking to my car after doing some shopping and for the first time in well over a year, I looked at my car and was actually happy with it and rather proud knowing that it was mine (as I was going to get in it). It's a good feeling when you appreciate your car and you know other people do as well (I saw some people taking a peek as I was walking out of the store).

And you think an Italian car would be any better? You crazy. All I'm saying is the B7 (and I hear B8), are pretty bullet proof. As you know I'm on my second B7 and on top of maintenance and a couple minor things here and there (n80 valve - $15, etc), neither have had any issues. 6MT combined with the 2.0T is quite enjoyable even stock. Certainly a lot less maintenance/problems than the 2.7TT.

After almost 2 years of driving around with clear front turn signals (due to clear corner mod) I finally got around to installing the OEM stealth bulbs. I had wanted to switch my fogs to some Hoen Endurance yellow, and only remove the bumper once, but got impatient. So, now I get to remove it all over again when I pick up the fog bulbs.

Even though its fairly easy removing the bumper, it still pisses me off every time that in order to change various bulbs I have to remove the bumper.

The fourth centercap was on the dinged up wheel. Just take it off of there and swap it onto the wheel that is missing one.
And that's not good to hear about the vibration. I hope the wheels are okay. Nothing looked messed up when I had looked at them.

Apparently one of the centercaps disappeared during the shop's test drive after they mounted the wheels. I picked up a new one at the dealer today ($40, ouch).

I put 8mm spacers on the front and 10mm on the rear, and thought the bolts I had would be long enough for the fronts, but apparently not. I swapped the 8s for some 5s I had laying around and put proper bolts on, and the vibration is gone. These wheels ride so much better than my BLQs did, it's like I just got a new suspension.

I took some better photos this morning, I'll post them later.

I bought it used, but "virginized" by the seller. It's really not as expensive as you think, he's had them on the classifieds before. I went back and forth, but I decided that I preferred the white needles and more aggressively styled numbers to the A4 with red needles and rounder numbers. It looks absolutely fantastic at night. I had the option of purchasing an A4, or a hybrid of the two (i.e. A4 with white needles).

The differences are subtle, but with any combo I wanted, I landed on S4. If I change my mind, I can swap the faces and needles over for a more original look.

I always thought that swapping the cluster was also something you needed a dealer to do? At least that is what the classified ad's I see usually say, something to do with the immobilizer? How did you manage to do the install PNWAvant?

Well, I used to have a B6 S4, so that sorta makes it okay, right? I actually have a S4 steering wheel in there too. I know its exactly the same wheel, but the reason I installed it was because someone locally was selling for $100, brand new in plastic. As you can imagine, it was in significantly better shape than the original with 140k miles... Bottom line, if something is functioning better, I see no reason not to run subtle S4 logos on the interior... Now, you won't see me running S4 bumpers though...

The seller (forum member MPower) did the "virginizing". I don't know what the process is, but I know the cluster started as a used S4 cluster from a wrecking yard, and the mileage was reset to zero by him. I'm sure it is complicated. He provided me a cable and software to read the immobilzer PIN from my ECU. Once I had that, I used my own VAG COM cable and step-by-step instructions provided by him to get my old mileage burned into it, and all my old coding and existing keys swapped over. Took about an hour, on my end.

yes, it holds only on 4 screws... the difficult part is just cutting the upper holder on the bumper into half...

Not what I did today, but can't wait for next week, things ordered today

- Used FX300 from Fred2kA4
- New Fender (to get rid of the ugly dented one)
- install the FrankenTurbo Kit (gaskets for the FT kit)
- install the milltek exhaust (picked it up used locally)
- install the 440cc file/injectors for the FT kit
- install the SS kit
- install the fixed back Bride Seat
- make a custom harness bar for the avant

Car's going to be transformed over night (or probably over two to three nights haha)

It sounds like I don't drive a lot but I've done well, since she's come under my watch (March of 2011) I've put on 14k. And yes, the math's right, I bought an 08 with 16k on the ticker. My daily commute is only 10 miles round-trip so a lot of the miles are fun miles...the best kind of miles :)

That's still quite a bit of miles since you have multiple cars--but from what I gather you have a very active lifestyle.

Yeah, I commute 45 miles ONE WAY, Monday - Thursday. May as well go in Avantstyle. Unfortunately, that means we don't drive it a lot during the weekends, and she doesn't get a lot of fun. There is the occasional trip up the coast or into the mountains where I open it up!

And people talk about Audis being unreliable. PFFT!

That is because those people don't understand that these german cars require constant attention to how they are operating...
That doesn't mean constant maintenance but rather when service is due than it has to be attended to and when something feels odd...check it out..

I bought this B6 Avant with 51,000 miles in 08. In four years it has stranded me Twice.
Once in January in a snowstorm I blew a tire and the widowmaker jack jammed on me, couldn't pull it out, raise or lower it. Needed a tow truck with a hydraulic jack to free it up.
Second time the fuel pump went and that was that.

Agreed, I know way too many people who blow off scheduled maintenance and just get an oil change at the jiffy lube...

what was your commute? Pete does a ~20ish mile drive to work up the 15 to Rancho Bernardo. I think it's been a while since you were here last but the 15 is nice now, they finished the carpool project, I think it's 4 or 5 carpool lanes running down the bisecting north and southbound, the carpool lanes themselves are separated by a zipper. So since he carpools with his brother, his commute is easy--they lucked out too because their exit is from the carpool lane..
