New spark plugs. Definitely needed and hoping my gas mileage increases (because it's been shit!).

Changed my rear hatch actuator.
The hatch would only open once in a while, when it felt like it.
What good is an Avant if you can't open the damn hatch!
It was driving me nuckin' futs. The part was $130 (!), took about 20 mins to change.
I used this tutorial, in case yours is doing the same thing-

Lucky you! Mine was stuck, no way to get the darn thing open. I had to take it to the local Audi stealership here who not only bent me over, but damaged my vehicle in the process.

i have had this problem for over a year now....It's actually temperamental, refuses to open if the hatch is in the sun for any length of time, opens fine if it's in the shade and cool.....
replaced the hydraulic legs ( or whatever they are called ) last year, that was fun, previous owner stripped the right side threads....Hmmm..liquid metal did the trick , works as they should....
But that servo/motor latch issue is getting old, reaching for chute release when the hatch is empty is one thing, trying to unlatch it with two Stratocaster cases or loaded with tools is a contortionist's nightmare....[facepalm][headbang]
Thanks for the link....

I did the same thing, except mine would open but it wouldn't register that was open so the light wouldn't come on and the alarm would set again if I didn't open any of the other doors. So I would be putting something in the back not notice that it locked again and the alarm would go off and scare the S@$% out of me. so I changed the hatch latch now it works like a charm. [up]

So for those of you who replaced the mechanism, could you get the hatch open if you pulled the red hatch release fro the inside? When my wont open (which is most of the time), pulling that cable doesn't do shit. I can hear the motor working but it does not release. I think my problem is with the actual latch piece itself and not the motor that runs it.
ebi718
07-03-2012, 01:16 PM
Mine couldn't open at all, and I didn't want to apply too much pressure on the trim pieces so as not to break s#@t! So, I couldn't even see a red release cable. I'd recommend you replace the Rear Hatch Latching Mechanism - the part # for mine was part # 4B9-827-505-N. My other question is what to apply to the lock mechanism to keep it operational/rust free. WD40? Grease?
BCsniper
07-03-2012, 01:37 PM
When you hit the button did you hear anything? I hear the motor working that's why I've been thinking the latching mechanism works, but the actual latch piece is not opening/closing properly
ebi718
07-03-2012, 02:25 PM
Yes, you hear the motor go 'click-clunk', but it doesnt release the latch (even when you the use the Key fob or release button inside the car.

yup, that's exactly what mine does. Good to know that this is the problem. The part is $78 on GAP, although I'll probably just steal it off of my 3.0 for now until I feel like buying the new part to replace the faulty one.

I ocasionally have the opposite problem, I slam the hatch shut and the latch doesn't close and the hatch bounces back in my face. I have to use the keyfob to lock and then unlock all the doors, I can then slam the hatch closed normally. It usually happens durring the colder months, anyone else have this happen to them.

Got the "roller blind" for the trunk of the avant (it's the vertical net that goes behind the rear seats). Best part: audi dealer wanted $540 for one new. I got mine for $16 shipping included off ebay (well, actually it was $.99 for the item, plus $15 shipping). Now I can keep the dog in the back without fearing her jumping over the seat.

LOL. Oh I've been there many times. Too many times, in fact. Never ever have had to chain up, not in my S4 Avant when I had it, and certainly not in the Touareg. Of course, I've been driving in snow for 18 years now (yikes, I feel old).
That said, I've seen way to many idiots in my day think they know what they're doing, and nearly kill themselves, and worse, others.

The B7 does, yes. It's supposedly a reminder to make you stop and rest for a bit. But I know that stopping quickly, like getting gas or a quite bite doesn't reset it. So I don't know how long you have to stop for it to reset.

Today's Ambitious Agenda:
1) Install new 034 motor mounts - my current ones are oozing fluid everywhere
2) Replace upper front control arms with new 034 control arms - the stock bushings are tearing out in chunks to its time to make the switch
3) Install new front Axles - picked up refurb ones from RAXLES. My inner CV boots are leaking grease and cost wise it just made more sense to replace the whole thing rather than just the inner which is a pain the ass to get on it itself
Its basically my largest car repair job to date so we'll see how long it takes before it makes me cry

Have fun with the motor mounts the passenger side is a PIA. Gear wrenches and lots of different length extensions will be needed, do the motor mounts when the axels are out and be sure to let it idle for a bit to settle in before getting everything tight.

Got injured by it.
Decided it was long overdue for me to clean the carpets, cue lots of bending over, get just about done, and pull something in my lower back. Been in agony ever since, hoping it clears up by Monday, or at the latest Wednesday (job interview). Back pain sucks.
On a good note, at least my carpet / floor mats looks nice and clean. [rolleyes]
Changed the oil, bled the brakes, cleaned the air intake snorkel (lots of bugs inside), installed S4 caliper retainer springs and clear side indicators, topped of the windshield washer fluid, and then put the roof box on. Now it's ready for a road trip!
Here's the final result. Still needs a good bath, but this will do for now:

Decided to tack one more item on to the day - finding the leak in my washer fluid reservoir. Turned out that the pump had a bad seal. Just gave it a nice layer of Permatex silicone gasket maker and it hasn't leaked in the past couple hours so I think that did the trick.

*I torqued them down after preloading the suspension to equal height of how it sits on the road but then I had to remove the jack and it dropped back down - I'm guessing that's ok as long as I torqued them down while under full load before putting the wheel back on right??

no, not stage 3...yet. I had stock dp's and cats put on, and a evap vac leak fixed. Stage 3 will have to wait for a little while, but maybe someday (like if/when the k03 turbos kick it). My plan for now is to wait until the turbos go, then start working toward stage 3 slowly. I have always LOVED the idea of a sleeper wagon.
I finally got the cactus smogged yesterday, and got it registered today. Finally has CA plates on it.

I had my 75k service done (+ an accessory belt that was dry rotted) and earlier this week I installed the Dension Gateway 100 iPhone/iPod integration unit.
For those in and around the Boston area, I had the service work done at Ming's Auto Repair in Allston. I've been going there for a few years now and he's a great guy, honest and his prices are low and work top notch. I highly recommend him [up][up]

When will you be bagging it? Thats the next step right? I must say i hate that you didn't stick to the original plan or wide tires on wide wheels and crazy power, but your execution of this set up is money.
I hate it to man, trust me. I wanted to do the big power thing more than anyone but just couldn't bring myself to pull the funds from the family. I might be doing a simple k04 setup in a couple months but we'll see. Going to keep it static.

Well shit, I'm kinda screwed then haha. This is true, however I'm not sure if I really want to hold out for an Imola...
The other side to it is, I'll still have to pay around $350/month on the Fiat. The way I look at it is, I can pay $350/month for a car that I really like, or love. Plus the unspent money on the new Avant/Stage3 and shit will go right towards the Fiat loan.

Something about it - possibly the rarity is just awesome. Besides, if you do go stage 3 and keep her for the long haul, then you would HAVE to do RS4 widebody. His actions were close to an internal upgrade to Stage 2 when the unthinkable happened. It came to our attention that your enterprising son, suffered a lapse in judgement and mistakenly traded this rare and desired Cactus Green Avant for a vehicle of much less status and providence. Your generous support of this transaction, albeit unwise, matched with your continued dedication to his upbringing warrants that we work together to help steer this impressionable youth back in the right direction.
We advise a quick and prudent sale of his current vehicle be set in motion. Please immediately begin an ardent search for a qualified replacement. Oh, the only thing I'm afraid of is the wrath of my wife if I tore into the car for a stage 3 build right now. I can visualize the barrage of complaints, mostly centered around: "you just bought this car, and the engine is sitting next to it why?!?!" Given a little time, I'll have the excuse that it is "maintenance", and leave out the bit about replacing semi-fast parts with fast-as-hell parts. On the one hand, the turbos can't die soon enough, but on the other hand, if they can just hang in there a little while longer, this will all go much more smoothly [;)]

I could do one better: buy a second engine, like this one: http://www.audizine.com/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=75944&title=2-7-longblosk-pulled4067k&cat=23
That way I could start on a stage 3 build without having to pull the cactus's engine.
Although I'd have to find somewhere to put it... although there should be plenty of room in the house once I'm inevitably thrown out! I may need to rethink this plan a bit...

The results aren't looking too good. Not to mention I also can't seem to locate the title [confused]

For the Fiat? You had a Lien on it correct? If so, your lender has the title.

Yea, for the Fiat. I'd swear that when I got my plates/registration in the mail it contained the title.

That would be very unusual. Contact your lender. $50 says they have it. They won't release it until you pay the car off, but they should provide a letter or something like that to the buyer guaranteeing that once they receive full payment they'll mail the title - that's pretty standard.

I'm going to assume you're right. Anyone know of a bank that would be willing to give a loan for a 2001 model year car? I don't think many will [:(]

Different states have different rules about who holds the title when there's a lien on the car.

Check with a credit union. Their rates are usually a little bit better than banks as well.

Good point. But this is why you always see things like "clean title in hand" posted in classifieds. Because otherwise the lienholder usually has it

A huge +1 to that. I don't think ours would have any hesitation giving us a loan for up to 100% financing on a B5. Up to KBB value of course.

Credit Unions over banks or other institutions for loans on older cars. They're pretty much the only ones that will lend on anything over six years old.
