I'm currently parting my Allroad out due to engine issues that AoA neither cooperated over nor fixed, so I'll be trading it in soon... However, I'll still be an Avant owner because I just picked up this super clean '01 S4 Avant!...
That was a great trade!
Nice! You need one more T on that badge now.
Thanks, still not sure if I like the badge or not. Figured I would give it a shot but I think it may be coming off.
Eventually installed an old RNSE I had last night. Quite an upgrade from the symphony.

No, mine is an OEM Audi RNSE unit and I just used a Kufatec harness so it was very easy.
Just unplug the Symphony II unit and plug this one in. Only thing is you have to plug in a gps antenna which I just left in the dash and it works fine.

Wow props for sticking with Audi. Its a shame the problems you had with both of your gorgeous white wagons :(
Thanks man, and yeah it's a total shame! For a while I was pretty sold on moving away from Audi after getting rid of this car, but the anticipation of tuning and slapping on my Loba LO400 turbo, HPFP, and injectors kept eating away at me... I still have a strong passion for Audi's old stuff (all thanks to my old '91 200TQA), so I figured I'd choose two Audi wagons with legendary turbo engines and dialed it in to the B5 S4 Avant & '95 S6 Avant... Still trying to find the perfect S6 Avant, but they're reeeaaalllyyy hard to find clean and with lower-ish miles. Wish me luck on the search! [:D]
That was a great trade!
I'm thinking the same too! It's amazing how much more fun these are to drive than the newer stuff...

That's badass! Thanks for sharing the info on the Kufatec harness... I'm planning on doing the same upgrade on my B5, but after some research I still can't figure out whether it's possible to get SiriusXM working on the headunit... I'm sure I'd have to buy a sharkfin and the proper wiring and such, but I guess I'll need to do some more digging...

Yes the harness makes life very easy and I think I did see one for the B5 to RNSE on their site. I think the hard part for you might be finding a unit with the correct face plate to fit the dash of the B5 as it never came in the B5 and most I have seen have been custom or modified to fit. My car already had sat so it was plug and play but I think all you will probably need are the sat radio module and antenna.
Also congrats on the pickup, that is a clean looking S4[up]

They do have a b5 harness, and you do have to modify the face plates. Cheapest/most difficult/best looking route is the a3 unit. Easiest/worst looking is the a6 unit. Most expensive/easiest to find/best looking is the a/s4 unit.
I used an a3 rnse for mine.

Thanks for the info! I popped by Apikol yesterday and one of the guys just so happened to have done it to his C5 AR, so he sorta walked me through what needed to be done. I also downloaded this Symph I to RNS-E install guide (https://penti.org/~harald/audi/RNS.pdf), which goes through literally everything. I'm all about keeping the car looking OEM+, so I think I'll try to find a color-matching shark fin antenna (w/ NAV & Sirius capability) to keep it looking super clean.
Thank you, I still feel damn lucky for finding one this clean, that's for sure. Most of the ones I see out here are beat to hell!

The one you linked looks nice and is optioned well but I have heard stories of android units like that being buggy and a pain to get working correctly. If your tech savvy its probably not an issue though. Also I got the whole bundle for about the same price of what that unit costs which for me was worth going OEM.

I personally like how the rnse looks at home in the interior. Very few if any aftermarket units fit it properly.
I also got mine for pretty cheap, $200 on eBay for a "broken" unit. Just needed a new display cable and I was in business.
I have a 3 spoke wheel with no controls so not an issue for me but if you have a multi-function wheel with the buttons they should work.

Also seeing you v1 right next to the rear view made me think it would be beyond awesome if someone made a remote screen kit that was built into the factory mirror. That would be so stealth.

So I got some great news of my old 6MT B7 S4 Avant from its new owner. Car has gone through some much needed freshening up, and since he isn't on the forums, I thought I would share. The new owner got the car wrapped flat black, which actually looks pretty sweet (see images below I took when I saw the car last week). I also stopped by the shop where he was having the work done to check out the process.

While all of this was going on, the new owner went ahead and took care of a full timing chain service and clutch replacement (hallelujah!!!).

The car is now incredibly fresh looking and drives great. In even better news, it will be on the market soon in the New York City area, probably around 13-14K. I will post the for sale ad when that does happen.
Just goes to show how much these cars matter to people who care about them. I miss this thing a lot, but I'm really happy to say it is in great hands and has been extremely well taken care of. Hopefully when it goes on sale it will go to a great new owner. Sorry for the long winded post, but thought it was worthy of the share. [up]

I inspected everything and it all appears to be ok, but I have a question for any of you that have these coilovers: Did they come with 4 of these anti-squeak bushings? My "box" only contained one, but the things was so trashed they could have easily fallen out! [headbang]

These are the only photos I have. Made a new captive nut with a nyloc and washer hot glued together, then glued to chopstick so I had something to hold and feed the nut into the pillar. I used a rotary tool to cut a hole on the inside of the D pillar, Unfortunately, my aim was off and I had to cut a second hole. I left the bottom edge attached so I could just bend it out of the way and then bend it back when I was done. Once I had access, I used my nut on a chopstick to get it started. Then it was just tightening everything up. I used additional larger washer on both sides, as my first attempt at fixing this was to install a nutsert in the sheet metal, which required drilling out the hole larger. This unfortunately failed.

The Avant's been busy this weekend. Our first snowboarding trip of the season yesterday and a Christmas tree trip today. The tree farm said it was the first time they've stuffed a tree in a roof box haha. 7.5' Fraser Fir just barely fit. Could have drove a different vehicle, but what's the fun in that?
I also recently acquired another set of S5 wheels. This time the peelers I've wanted. Grabbed a set of Blizzak LM-60's and now I have a set of 19" S5 wheels for winter and another for summer. OEM+ year-round FTW! Peelers are my summer mode. I wanted to get the car cleaned up before I took pics of them, but Avant's look great clean or dirty!

What are benefits 0A3 swap over OE1?
0A3 is from B6 S4 right? So I'm assuming that it's easier as allroad V8(chain) is more similar to B6 (chain) one than A/S6 V8 (belt).

Short gearing, not very useful for power he'll be making.

Well that is a good question. It is a rebuilt jhm 0A3. I followed their recommendations and opted for the smoother shifting trans. It will hold as much power as I will be adding. I realize the 01e is stouter. Both required minor custom fabrication to fit as we all know the 4.2 ar never was mated to a 6mt.

I wonder if 0A3 will mate with belt driven V8...because I have similar idea of building supercharged V8 that never saw USA soil in 6 speed manual version, only Europe did and they are rare.Hint: it's not avant but it's the sexiest Audi of that time.

Huh. I hadn't heard that the oa3 is smoother. Interesting. 01e is pretty notchy though so I believe it.
How do the ratios compare? Are you using the oem rear diff or swapping in the b6 version?

Yes. One of the hurdles in pulling off the swap along with custom rear diff carrier and abs wheel speed spensors...and me neither. Ha! I am trying to learn all I can in short order. Will get a hands/eyes on run down of all unique mods when I go pick it up in a few weeks. I asked jhm to make it happen and they really went the extra mile to execute it. I would never be able to do it without their expertise and knowledge of the 4.2 motor and drivetrain. Should be a pretty unique audi when complete [emoji106]

I dismantled and rigged the driver's window closed untill I get a new regulator in. This is probably my biggest gripe with B6s. If the brackets don't get brittle and break, the cable somehow gets thrown off the pulley and jams up. Such a crap design.

I had to tape up my sunroof as I just noticed the rear sunroof drain is messed up. cleaned it out and blow air through it and was hoping it would keep from staining inside the car... but seems like that drain is clogged or crack between the C and D pillar so will probably end up with getting to pull the headliner.

Not quite tucking but i might have to remove the spacers or go with 5mm. This is the exact same setup I was running with my Rotors/Contis and had next to zero rubbing, but these tires have a more rounded, bulbous looking sidewall from what i can tell. Maybe it's just because they're new. I don't know but I've got serious rubbing happening!

Yes indeed! I went back and talked the guy at Discount and even though I had driven on them for a day, they were technically stock size AND I'm running 10mm spacers, they still agreed to take them back which was amazing. So I just had them order me a set of PSS in 245's... figured it was the least i could do! [:p]

It's painful to type this, but I've decided to go ahead and sell the S4 and leave the brand for a little while. She's getting a little detail, then I'll be putting her on the market for another enthusiast to enjoy and love. It's been one HELL of a journey these past 4 years and am honored to have owned 4 epic Avants. I'll be back in an Audi eventually (yes, being an Avant is a requirement), but until then, take care folks.

Series 2! So nice.
I think I'll (hopefully) find a nice B8 A4 Avant. Would love a white one, s-line, maybe even titanium if i can find one ever. Would settle for grey, or that super sweet brown that's also super rare.
For now, my forester is treating me really well. I'm going to keep it as a project/winter car for sure, maybe eventually go full on STI swap with it, including exterior JDM parts and such.

Yeah buddy! You can't go wrong with a '12 B8 Avant with all the goodies (S-line, B&O, MMI, sport seats, etc.). [up]
Mmmm yes, brown with all the right packages is super rare. I hadn't ever seen a decently optioned example until someone posted about one in the B8 section recently. It had alcantara seats and every single option (minus titanium), including adaptive cruise, and I was drooling all over.

I've had a hard-on for Land Rovers and have wanted to get an SUV for a while, so I decided to get an LR4. Proud to say that I'll be using it for what it was designed to do, instead of just popping around to and from shops.
Trying to find one identical to this:

Looks good, get the HD Pkg w/ the locking diff?
