Welp, I gained some extra "sounds" for sure.
I think it feels the slightest bit more responsive, but then again, it could be from driving it like a prick because I am so psyched to finally get it installed...

for starters, yes, the sounds are definitely coming through in "stereo" now.
...
I'll pay some closer attention and let you know if I think it helped any.
A word on price: I got a screamin' deal on the kit from a fellow AZ'er and the just bought a new filter from Carbonio. They also hooked me up with new hardware (since the previous owner didn't include it), and I added some heat shielding and high-heat epoxy paint. So, for less than $200, I'm setup with what I believe to be one of the best looking intakes around.

Yeah, well, my ultimate garage would have been to keep the S4 Avant, A4 Avant, and add something like the Cayenne or Raptor. Definitely not heading that way, and she won't let me off the A4, yet. Having just picked up the E30, I wouldn't get rid of that yet either. So it looks like if I want something new, I've got to axe the S4.

It does look like a Tonka truck. And I like it! Here's what I'd like, I think...

I know. I know. I should have done the A6 for sure. That would have satiated the itch for a little while, at least. I really wish AOA would see reason and bring sexy back - with Avants.

Here's BMW considering bringing back the 5-Series touring after the debacle that was the 5-Series GT. http://www.autoblog.com/2011/08/18/bmw-considering-bringing-5-series-touring-back-to-u-s-v12-to-s/

I was getting ready for winter - it's never too early! I installed mud/splash guards (OEM). However, I don't like them on the car. I might remove them and put them back on when I change the tires over. These are my summer tires (17" Avus with 225/45 Michelins). My winter tires are the stock 16" rims with Michelin X-ice. It might look better with the winter wheels/tires.

I thought the same thing. More photos posted above.

The PS2s are awesome! I mostly drive on windy highway roads so they are lots of fun! I recommend them and would buy them again.

Thanks! The wheels are supposed to be gunmetal according to the guy I bought them from (anther AZer), however, I bought them because they were a good price and close to me. I like the Avus design, but wasn't sure about the color at first. However, I really like them now. They match the color of my car fairly close. An average image from my iPhone, but not too bad...

Lower Grille's, converted from ribs to mesh.
I was wondering what the lower's would look like if they were mesh instead of plastic ribs and the fog lights would be hidden behind the mesh.
It's an inexpensive conversion, less than $10, but it is time consuming to get it to look right.
Of course the right side has taken half the time that the left ( first side did )
But ran out of daylight , for touch up paint, will finish right side and final updates tomorrow.

moyenecorniche

I did, but that was the reason for the change, I'm also considering painting them Atlas Grey to match the body color.
I was/am searching for a way to have the lower grille's disappear.
This is a trial basis and it's ongoing, so it will get changed, there is no other way than to experiment on the car itself.

That being said, I may revert back to black as you suggest, one thing is that the fog light beams are unaffected, or so minimally that I cannot tell the difference.

Bear in mind that this is a preliminary to fitting either an Oettinger or Ultrasport lower or full bumper. I wanted to see wether the mesh would work.
Worse case scenario, it is easy to return to stock, just pop in the two grille's, they're readily available.

Have to live with it for a little while, will get some feedback next Wednesday.

It is the first attempt as i said, i will order a couple sets of the grille's as I have some idea's as to improve the assembly and final look.
fabricating these was after all not as easy as I had envisioned.

As I said, it is a trial period and not at all permanent.

And Yes I'm not satisfied with the way they went together but don't worry, I'm not about to make my car look like a garish spectacle, like that Imola Yellow A4 or S4 that the owner had a wide shark's mouth painted across the entire lower...[confused] Of course the same may subjectively apply to my little experiment.

Spent about 8 - 10 hours doing a full exterior detail + as good of a paint correction as you can get with a crappy pad style random orbital. I am so pumped at how much better the car looks now. I got rid of about 90% of the swirl marks and scratches. Boy does it shine now! You sure get some funny looks cruising down to Napa for extra polish compound with fluoro green masking tape everywhere and a racing stripe for s***s and giggles haha. I also swapped out the standard rear rings with the A8 ones which are slightly larger and really like how they look. Looks a bit more substantial.

well, i will tell you what i did the past few days because i did not have internet, well yesterday was my birthday so i gave my car a wash and my friend and i did the brushed aluminium belt trim mod. Then later that night i got a flat tire. I ended up needing a new tire ($164), i was supposed to have my car flashed at 3:30 today, that didn't happen because i spent my money on the tire. I also ordered a front mount intercooler, and a boost gauge. I am pissed i couldn't have my car flashed.

Nice, a roof box is def on my wish list for this winter. They are just so much more versitile than regular snowboard racks since you can obviously stuff anything into them.

I want to do my back rings with plasti-dip any suggestions?

Saw a post on this not long ago, they masked off the area around the rings, and then sprayed the rings with plastidip, the excess apparently just peals right off as the plastidip will break on the edges, so you are just left with the rings in black.

You're going to rock 19's 8.5 in the winter in your region...???
Dumb question but how much snow do you get ( never been up that way so bear ( no puns intended) with me if you please )
I'm on 17-7.5 for winter and even with Alpin PA3 Michelin's there are times when they float.

Speaking of wheels and tires.......
Conti sports wrapping MK2 TT 18x9's going on for Avantoberfest. Picking them up next weekend, have to install Koni yellow's and H+R Sports for a 1.5-7 drop. NO no coilovers, not needed...
Will update pics on my mod/build thread when installed.......Thumbs up...

As for the stem caps, you can get those for your Avant from the dealership with A4 logo, they are well made thogh every so often I have to replace one or two as they seem to dissapear....not loose just someone wanting a keepsake...

Decided today to pull ashtray out, shift surround and clean the edges which were groooosssssss...!!!!!
Well once I removed the shifter surround trim...undid the two 8mm bolts and lifted/tilted the ashtray unit vertically.....[mad]
Surprise...Surprise...Surprise...[headbang][facepalm] It cannot be removed without 1st removing the climate control...[facepalm] which in turn cannot be removed without pulling out the Symphony Unit[rolleyes]
Which caused a few symphonic syllables in English...French and German.....Off to 4Amods and yup...confirmed...needed the keys to remove the radio or at least pull it out enough so that the CC could be pulled out so the ashtray unit could be itself removed and cleaned....LOL or Laugh with me...
So the keys are not that critical, used very narrow knives and carefully pried the radio out once the clips were released, got everything out...Did not unplug either the Climate control or for that matter the Radio.. I wasn't up for dealing with code's...
So everything is back in..... Except... As I type I just remembered I did not replug the ashtray light....
Back to the car.....Luckily it should not take more than a minute...

But it may be a while before I decide to clean the edges again.......

Argh............It did not take a minute...Had to once again pull the radio...then the CC... then pull the ashtray unit up enough so that my fingers and needle nose pliers could reconnect the plug.
Oh...did I mention the three tabs on the back of the ashtray unit which are surrounded by three grommets which you must get back in their slots to replace the ashtray unit back in its place.
Of which you must have the CC out of the way to be able to pivot the ashtray backdown [=(]......Uber Frustration....Sch-**-e....

I should add that day before yesterday.....replaced the hatch struts and changed oil and filter....after struggling with jacking up the car and getting the jack stands in place......

Got the whispbars and the packasport mounted up. Took it on the freeway up to about 75 or so and the decibel meter on my phone is saying it is exactly the same as without the roofbox or rails on there [:D]. The only thing you hear is due to the front of the box pushing air, but it sounds like driving on the freeway in like a 10mph wind. If I shut the moonroof slider you can't hear anything. To say I am pleased with this setup is an absolute understatement. It is everything I hoped for. It sits due to the recesses in the box and the short stack height of the bars the box sits flush with the roof rails. Cannot wait to get the top painted red on that sucker.

Personally, when I aim my headlights per DOT spec with the 2.1" drop, I feel like they're shining straight at the ground. Mine are aimed with a 1" drop instead and it's a bit better (probably because my headlights are so much lower than the average car, so the beams hit the ground sooner at that angle). I've had some friends do drive-bys with me and they said they weren't blinded or anything, even though I'm running 55w ballasts and 6k bulbs.

Completed my front license plate magnetization project.

Looked into ordering the B6 plastic plate holder from Audi. One dealer quoted me $150 and the other $200. I went to Autozone and found one for $4.99
The audi one will work for magnetizing but it did seem heavier than the Autozone plate.

Parts:
-Plastic Plate Holder from Autozone: $4.99
-PVC Sheet from Home Depot (this part creates a buffer between the plastic plate and front grill): $4.99
-3 Packs of 3/8 X 7/8 x 1-7/8: $4.94
-First attempt was superglue
-2nd attempt gorilla glue & gorilla tape

Sequence:
Glue two magnets to the plastic play holder.http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6095/6232993574_4e1a81549c_b.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6039/6232474857_6a4434927c_b.jpg
Glue 5 magnets to back of euro plate holder. Make sure to clamp magnets down because gorilla glue rises and will make them shift. (mind the leg shot)http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6222/6232997184_1a791d5822_b.jpg
Gorilla tape them over in case glue doesn't like the cold. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6047/6232987202_c0a00341c1_b.jpg
Tricky part. Glue the sheet of PVC to the FRONT of the Autozone plate holder. The reason for glueing the front is for when you pull the plate away from the car you aren't pulling the magnets away from the glue. The magnets will still be exposed as seen in the picture. Once the sheet has dried put 3 more magnets into the center area. Glue those to the PVC sheet as well as the plastic Autozone plate holder (sorry I don't have the picture of that part).http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6173/6232464647_c07a4ac21e_b.jpg
Screw everything back in and you have your parking plate or slow city driving plate.http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6166/6233058076_85f91034b0_b.jpg That isn't road rash, just a reflection of the phone flash = ) Also I know the chrome pieces look pretty worn. I just bought the car and plan to get a new grill after the winter.

I plan to keep my out of state IL plates for the s4. I worked out there for a month this Aug/Sep and we looked around Eldorado Springs, Nederland, but will probably end up going with Boulder or Louisville. Hope to build a house more in the mountains one day. I fly to work mostly so being close to Denver's airport is a must. It also limits our living radius (staying on the west side of the airport).

Today..which actually started yesterday...Engine light came on...rough idling below a 1000, thought perhaps.... well I had to get gas yesterday and put in Mobil 89 ( usually run 93 ) thought that might be the culprit...
Opened the hood/bonnet today....went to tech section looked up similar symptoms...possibly diagnosed the problem... T connection or MAF or Pressure Valve or..No none of the above..
As I was doing the mod described below I noticed that there seemed to be oil residue around the back of the engine and on top of the engine cover...Hmmm..closer inspection revealed one of the breather hoses has split.
So ordered all the parts today, they are all close to failure time wise...best to replace the entire section of couplings and hoses since taking one off without risking to crack the others is just too difficult and nigh impossible.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do it myself so Premier Auto will tomorrow...There goes $300.00 bucks...$200.00 in parts.....

....So I did a bit of unrelated mod concerning the air intake. Living in the country I noticed last year that around this time of year, mice figured out that the air box inlet was a perfect conduit to a warm and somewhat fuzzy box..??? I opened it up last year to find it full of soft nesting materials... Easy solution...took a piece of leftover grille from the lower grille's mesh, cut it and bent it to fit tightly in the opening of the air inlet.
No way is a mouse going to chew it's way thru a metal mesh......

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu294/MarcJM/0ba070d9.jpg

BTW...The mesh is the house gutter mesh that is sold at Lowe's and Home depot for like $3.00 a strip of 3 feet by 8 inches.
Initially designed to keep the leaves out....But it has so many other much more practical uses....[;)]

I'm not sure what they're rated, but they're strong as hell. I can't pull the plate mount off with one hand, which is exactly what I wanted. I did, however, also purchase a filler with a license plate mount so that it's permanently mounted during the winter and also to keep my custom filler piece looking nice.

Got my coolant flushed and the expansion tank replaced, also ordered my timing belt kit. Thought this was kind of funny though, notes from the tech on the invoice they gave me:

Yesterday I hauled a giant Ariens snowblower home in my Avant while a guy with a Tahoe couldn't make the same model fit in his vehicle, so he had to rent a pickup from Home Depot. Poor guy.

Put a new glove box lid in on Saturday. Not a difficult job at all. I HATE the glove boxes on these cars, though. They break as much as anything! LOL

Swapped my girly sway bar for the RS4 unit. Feebly struggled with the bar removal for about 10mins before dropping the exhaust hangers and pulling it right out. Unfortunately I haven't had time for a test drive yet.

Tomorrow I'm hoping to get the Tyrol Sport brake kit and engine snub mount installed. The possible arrival of Adam's rotors may just blow that plan all to hell...[wrench]

I remember doing that, its funny how much smaller the stock one is compared to the RS4. I also struggled for a few minutes getting both the old one out, and the new one in, so you are not alone there.

just picked up my Thule Atlantis 1600 from Greyhound.

it just barely fit in the back of the Avant. Hopefully I'll get roof bars soon so I can start using it. I had to move the seats forward then cock it at an angle so I could move my drivers seat back to a somewhat reasonable position to shift.
I'm still considering getting these to use on my roof: http://www.ebay.com/itm/260848557097?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Of course, like most, I'd prefer a set of Whispbars, but it's hard for me to justify spending the cost of the box on just a set of rails. I thought I could find a cheap, decent pair of Thule or Yakima bars for sale locally, but since I haven't really been seeing any lately I might just give up and buy the eBay ones.

Oil change, new air filter, spark plugs, and if they arrive today new cabin filter and windshield wipers.

On another note, seen 2 B8 Avants since yesterday, I think the Premium Plus model, either way they both looked amazing and I am somewhat glad I cannot afford to trade my B7 in on a B8, the more I see a B8 (especially the top model) Avant the more I want one.

I installed the Tyrolsport solid brake bushing kit today. Great mod for brake feel and extremely simple install. It has a similar effect to braided ss brake lines - Less squish and a more predictable pedal action. Every B6 without a bbk should have this mod.

She's fine thanks. Another bitch ran a red and clipped the front. Pulled her a good 30-40ft down the road. Whole front end is pulled to the side and pushed back a bit. Radiator was destroyed and bleeding. Engine seemed ok except for the belts/pulleys are obviously all smashed to bits. We don't know 100% sure if it's totaled yet, but it's not looking very promising right now. Damage was pretty substantial.

Assuming it is totaled, what are you thinking of getting next? Another Avant or something different?

Another avant for sure. We were hoping to upgrade to an S4 (still avant - wanna sell cheap? ;)), but that's not in the cards at the moment. Plus, a B7 S4 6MT avant is not something you can really buy on a whim. So we're already looking at replacing with another B7 A4. Found a unicorn in CO for reasonable price. (Ibis white titanium 6MT) that we'll likely pursue if (when) we find out we're totaled. Poor car. Wife is heartbroken. She looooooooooved that car.

I'm glad to hear your wife is ok, though. Cars can always be replaced. Family, friends, and such...not so much. Keep us updated.

Depending on your needs, I do know a certain B6 S4 Avant 6MT that's for sale. [:D] lol
