No, putting it in your gas tank shouldn't cause a cloud of smoke.

Yea I learned that already lol 4th time fixing the flex pipe. Actually, the first time my patch blew way because I was on the highway going 70mph and boosting. All that pressure blew the patch. The other 2 times was because I was driving in 10" of snow which pulled off the patches. Hopefully this time it'll stick until I get a new downpipe.

I don't think I'll ever get a full exhaust in this car for $900+. I can settle for HFC/TestPipe + Downpipe + Rest of Stock exhaust. What's the TT downpipe???

I have a B6 A4 TIP (Looking to do a 6 speed swap soon) & Motoza has been my first tune choice since day one. Can't wait to get it.

someone is selling that 034 testpipe downpipe in the classifieds for less and I think its new too+

Thanks, I saw that earlier this week & I just realized he's 30min away from me! Just PM'd him, I hope he still has it. I'll just need to figure how to connect it to my stock exhaust.

Do test pipes drone on the highway?

easiest option since his dp ends with a vband flange you could have a shop cut it off and weld on a piece that tapers down to 2.25 or whatever and clamp it to the stock exhaust

If you search long enough and thorough enough, you will come across deals. For instance, I got a Magnaflow 16601 rear for $600 and a TT DP for $120 back in the day. The TT DP is TechTonics downpipe.

Thanks. I knew about 034 just not the other ones.

Nice, have an audio clip? I'm guessing the Techtonics Tuning downpipe connection is the same as the stock exhaust and you just clamp it on with a V band or what?

I'm looking into the 3" 034 test pipe/down pipe combo for $400, but just not sure if I would be able to bolt it on to my stock exhaust with clamps. I also read that there is no point of having 3" test pipe if the rest is going to be stock exhaust, it'll just be a bottleneck again. Is this true?

Why does my tail light housing pop out?

I recently had both drivers and passengers out to replace bulbs, put both in (fairly straight forward process) and my passenger side wants to pop out. Drivers side is in nice and tight. The screw is basically all that holds it in. I have since taped the bousing in place. My thoughts are to replace the "rubber sleeves" that the two tabs slide into? It seems to fit nice and snug until i go to tighten the screw. then the outside starts coming out. Thanks in advance

Make sure the harness is not obstructing the taillight from seating properly. Other then that I would also be looking at those rubber sleeves. I believe I'm having a similar problem but haven't really paid any mind to it as of yet. Interested to hear what you find out.

What the easiest way to me to test an S4 cluster? I just got one in the mail, and want to make sure it works. Can I bench test it, or am I better off installing it in the car?

If I install it in the car before matching it to my car, will there be any adverse affects?

Edit: After some more searching, I found out how to bench test it, also found out that you can test it in the care without any issues.

Sounds good thanks.

Well I'm buying the 3" 034 test pipe/down pipe from him tomorrow. The only problem now is how to mount the V band to my stock 55mm exhaust. I found this adapter, which should work perfectly right?

http://www.unitronic-chipped.com/store/products/exhausts/unitronic-3-v-band-to-55mm-adapter.html#

Edit: I just realized I have to measure and be sure that the end of the 034 Downpipe reaches the 55mm stock exhaust area.

I bought the DP and rear about 3 or 4 years ago from MJM during an exhaust sale. It also helped that I was a local. [up]

Here is mine (before the 034 HFC install):

I thought it sounds good under acceleration and nice and quiet while cruising.

Dumb question from an a4 Noob.

I have an opportunity to pick up a nice Used Miltek exhaust that was removed from a B6 S4 cabriolet for very cheap. The only problem is, I have an 3.0 avant USP. How different are the exhausts for these two applications, and would It even be worth the headache?

Thanks.

All of the 3.0's and the S4s use the same exhaust.

To my understanding, if your thermostat failed, it could be stuck open, thus telling the sending unit to turn the fan on since the engine thinks that its hot. Those damn electrical thermostats have a mind of there own.

Thanks guys. Thats basically what im thinking. Really cannot be anything else. I will report back with what i find. it will be a bit as we just got a ton of ice and snow. Right now the tape is working great. But even if it is a 10 year old car, tape holding a light assembly is unacceptable.

Recently had the thermostat replaced. I picked up my car (had it worked on by an audi specialist) after hours. Upon starting it, i figured i would pop the hood and take a peek. Well im glad i did. I had barely enough coolant in the reservoir to cover the hose in the bottom. I was furious thinking they didnt even fill it up. So luckily i carry some coolant and water with me and filled it up. Car ran fine and temp stayed at half the entire drive home. So yesterday morning i called them and they said oh it must be an air bubble. "We had a tough time getting all the air out". They tell me this after they tell me the day before that there were no issues.

So my question is.....could an air bubble really take up that much space? To me that would be one huge bubble. They claim they drove it a lot and coolant level was good when they parked it. So bubble came out when sitting cooling down???

I just got an uncomfortable feeling about this whole thing. BTW low coolant light never came on when i started it up. Thanks in advance.

when a car sits over night and cools down and you do this a few times, the air will work its way out. When I bleed the system, I crack the cap after driving for the first few days. Coolant level always bubbles a bit, letting me know that air is working its way out.

I don't believe an air bubble would take up the space of your entire coolant tank. I'm not saying there wasn't an air bubble but for that much coolant to be missing there something's not right.

When it's cold, crack the bleeder screw and start pouring in coolant until you see coolant flowing out of bleeder. Gravity will force coolant down while forcing air up. Close up system. Warm up engine and run at 2k RPMs for about 2 minutes. Turn off and allow to cool. Then repeat. I wouldn't recommend popping the cap while it's still hot, the pressure release may suck air back in through the lower reservoir hose unless you're pressure bleeding it.

My $.02 after the $1000 I've dumped into my coolant system.

If they're claiming the problem was with an air bubble then they didn't finish the job.

This. There are tools that suck the coolant through. If they didn't use this then they didn't do the job right

Why do I have a high idle (1000 RPMs) after installing a new thermostat and doing a coolant flush?

I have removed all the air from the system, heater works, my coolant temp gauge reads normal (dead center) and VagCom is telling me the coolant temp once warm at idle is 95*C.

Intake manifold was not removed. Just the throttle body and throttle body hose. No vacuum lines were touched. Tomorrow I am installing a new TIP and will be performing a boost leak test after. I guess I will just hold off until then.

Yall think its safe to say it is not related to the t-stat/cooling system however?

I don't think it is if you aren't getting any cooling system related codes and your cooling fans aren't turning on prematurely. Have you preformed a throttle body reset?

Negative. I said to myself while removing the TB "I gotta remember to do a TB reset" - still forgot. I will give that a shot.

Edit, gave it a shot. Perfect idle and my Podi is back to reading -21". Old Guy and VagCom FTW! [drive]

Thanks for all the replies. I agree, an audi specialist should be able to get all the air out. When they told me that i just thought it was an excuse. could there have been a bubble in there? Sure. But they should have gotten it all out. But to take up that much room in the reservoir? I dont think so either. After i filled it up and drove home and have driven it since everything has been good. Ive checked the reservoir a few times and its been right on the mark. So seems like all the air is now out. THis is the second shop who are "audi/vw specialists" that have lost my business. Really cant trust anyone anymore. So glad there are forums like this with extremely knowledgable people willing to help out. Thanks again.

There is no specific duty cycle. It's a dynamic program that constantly adjusts to maintain the specified boost pressure as requested by the ECM.

I am getting code P0299 even after replacing my damaged TIP (boost did jump to 16psi from 14 however). Logged block 115 last night and I'm still not hitting requested boost.

Once the rain stops I suppose I'll have to log the duty cycle and do a pressure test.

Suspension related question::
So I know that the b6/b7 models use the same suspension set ups but spring rates and such are different. I have been trying to research anyone using a stasis lowering kit but have not had any luck seeing anyone using the set up. I came across a good deal locally for a stasis lowering kit from a B7 avant and I have a b6 sedan. The kit includes shocks, springs and perches. My question is, would this set up work with the b6?
Ive checked the stasis website and pretty much everything is 2009+. I have also checked the stance and wiki for the b6 as well and have not seen any info or anyone using the stasis kit. Thoughts...?

they will bolt up but it will be noticeably stiffer due to the avant being heavier

Are they coilovers? If they are then they will work. The B6/B7 suspensions are compatible with one another. Here's the manual from StaSIS on their street sport coils. You can see they're compatible with B6 and B7.

dumb idea to swap the internals of the tstat to another housing? Replaced original OEM that was stuck closed with a behr that had the rings scratched off 2 months ago. The new tstat has cracked at the base of the top port. I still have my old housing

Depends on what your gonna go through to do the swap. If you think it's worth it, go for it. It could possibly save you almost $100. That's a lot of beer. [:D]

It's really easy to take it apart. There's three torx screws holding it together and you should be able to swap it over. You'll be able to tell if there's a problem right after so you'll know if you saved $100. [up]

Im a little put off by this as I just replaced my OEM unit (11 years and 112K miles) with a Behr unit with the rings scratched off. Do you think there is anychance of an install error on your part?

I did my injectors and took the intake manifold out & put a new gasket in few months ago. I wish I remembered what it looked like. I think you might have the wrong one though.....

I don't think that's wrong... But only because I saw somewhere that they can be used for multiple size intakes and a guy used this no problem. Don't go by my word.

New rotor kits (drilled/slotted/etc) that don't provide an increase in diameter: more for show or is there any reason to spring for one. If a reasonable bigger brake kit (i.e. B6 A4 --> B7) isn't available.

Myst420

for a DD, drilled or slotted rotors aren't going to give you any noticeable differences. Other than more dust and possible "clicking" sounds when you brake.

What about spirited mountain driving? The B6 A4 is notorious for having under performing brakes, and even after upgrading pads I haven't felt much of a difference.

The purpose of the slots and drilled holes in rotors isn't to give you better braking performance, but rather to keep what you have from fading. That being said, unless you're on some crazy mountain, or a track, you aren't going to overheat your brakes.

Depends, going from 120-60 a few times will make them hot enough for you to notice a significant decrease in braking, unless you have drilled and or slotted rotors, the holes/slots just let air pass through rather than get trapped between your rotors and pads..

Right, but where are you going to go from 120-60 enough times, in short succession, besides a track? Unless you're trying to bed in your pads...

It has to be air, unless every blend door you have is stuck shut. Since you've had your wallet out lately, why not just pick up the AirLift II in 87supraman's link and never have to worry about air in the coolant system again? It does require that you have a decent air compressor to run it, though.

I feel your pain, for sure. I fought with the heating on my old B5 A4 for many years, and vowed I would never do that again with my B6's. The AirLift II is a wonder tool.

Haha, good point. I hit up the mountains at least twice a year if not more. Constantly going from 45/50 to 15mph constitutes having responsive brakes; at least moreso than stock. For DD duties they're ok of course.

Well, that's a very good question. I don't remember seeing a "minimum CFM rating" needed for this to work, but I use a 20 gal. air compressor that does 5.5 CFM @ 90 psi. I'm not sure if one of those little 1 gal. compressors would work. It might, but it may take longer to get up to the pressure needed.

On the other hand, you could buy yourself the AirLift II, and then if your little compressor didn't cut the mustard, you'd have a good excuse to buy that 60 gal. 13 CFM compressor you've had your eye on! [:D]

It's hard to tell from that top pic, but it appears to these aging eyes that yes, you are missing the piece that that side skirt would screw into. I can't quite tell which piece it is, though.

Take a look at this site (http://genuineaudiparts.com/parts/2003/Audi/A4%20Quattro/Base?siteid=214407&vehicleid=314345&diagram=1397125) and see if you can find it. This diagram might contain the critical piece.

Okay....

car won't start. starter turns over but engine won't catch on.

I've checked all fuses (all good). I've checked the ECU box and relays (all good). I can hear the fuel pump hum on startup (nothing new, I've heard this all the time). Tried to log into VCDS but it gives every check except for "section-02 ENGINE" (uh okay). When I go to clear DTCs, the scan always loses connection and times out. Tried logging in with Motoza tune software and it can't recognize ECU. Battery is fine. Double checked tune. Coil packs are good (I wouldn't be able to even tell if they are bad until the motor actually starts).

This car has a death wish, I guess. I've spent all my money replacing shit that didn't need to really be replaced on the slim hope that was causing problems. I'm stumped. Anyone want to buy this turd for $8k? Almost all of the internals are brand new.

I've been hovering around the 01314 ECM-No Comm code. Ross defines it as thus:

01314 - Engine Control Module: No Communications

Possible Causes
## CAN-Databus Wiring/Connectors from/to Engine Control Module faulty
## Fault(s) stored in Engine Control Module
## Engine Control Module recently flashed or re-mapped

Possible Solutions
## Check CAN-Databus Wiring/Connectors from/to Engine Control Module
## Check Measuring Value Blocks (MVB) ## Usually Measuring Value Blocks (MVB) 125+ show the current Communication Status

All the wiring and connectors appear to be intact (none melted or abraded). Yes the ECM was re-flashed with a Motoza 1+ tune but that was like 6 months ago. This problem only appeared during this break down and the car was running strong prior (except for coolant/overheating problem that led to this repair/debacle). And I can't log into ECU to check for fault codes because VCDS doesn't recognize the address, apparently.

Why do the stock sport 17" wheels have an 18" diameter? Am I measuring wrong some how, do they not do from face lip to face lip?

Im going to guess that you are measuring them incorrectly.

Its gonna be hard to find the proper size. They are all really large bolts. One of which has a half moon head which rests against the side of the trans .At least that one will need to be from the dealer. What happened to your other bolts?

Yes the wideband O2 sensor is used to confirm the SAI system is functioning properly. And yes the SAI system should still be used with a HFC. It will get it up to temperature faster which will reduce emissions and prolong the life of the HFC.

After getting a stage one GIAC tune, would you generally need an upgraded Diverter Valve to get past 12/13 PSI of boost? When I go full throttle in 4/5/6th gear I watch my boost shoot to around 12/13 before i start feeling a vibration. It feels like the engine starts to wobble, like its not getting enough air or im not getting full combustion in certain cylindars.

Have you logged the requested boost the ECU is asking for (block 115)?

That would be the first step. If it's not hitting requested boost I would then perform a boost leak test.

If you're on your stock DV (diaphragm style) it may be torn or worn out.

122,000 on the car and it's had the tune since November/December of 2013

The list of mods as he claims (I'm going to cross compare with his stack of receipts on Saturday)

APR ECU Stage 1+
Front mount intercooler and piping
Forge diverter valve
Air filter
Boost gauge+fuel ratio
Catless pipe (I'm thinking he means a test pipe?)
New Bosh 225 injectors
Flowmaster exhaust
Tein lowering springs 2.5 drop (convert to coilovers?)
18" wheels ADR
S4 grill
Vynel wrap 3d carbon fiber (Removing)
Headlight wrap with LEDs (Removing)
Front after market lip
Its wired for subs

My initial thought was if he's got all this is the vehicle not set up for Stage 2+? He claims you need to upgrade to K04 before Stage 2+ but if my research is correct, it's set up for it, right?

****EDIT****
I just realized also the CEL is not light up like it would be if by "catless pipe" he means a test pipe. Can someone clarify what he means by this?

With APR no, the 1+ and 2+ are the same other than the cel delete file. For APR the '+' designates the big injector file and the stage 2 (vs. stage 1) designates the cat delete file.

Other tuners are a bit different, although their respective websites details it all. [up]

I think the defrost works off the fan and coolant system (heat). The a/c compressor is required to make refrigerant colder.

The defrost utilizes both the A/C and the heater. The A/C is used to condense moisture to dry the air and the heater is used to heat the air. Without the A/C the inside of the windshield will tend to fog up. The next time you need to use the defrost you can hit the ECON button at the same time and you will be able to see the difference.

It really doesn't matter which order you use to bleed the brakes. Bentley states one way, "standard" practices suggest the opposite. What matters is that you do it approximately every 2 years. Be sure to include the slave cylinder if you have a manual. Hands down, the easiest method is with a Motive Power Bleeder or similar.

Is the digital miles to empty set off the fuel gauge or the sensor in the tank? I ask because my fuel gauge is stuck at half and the miles to empty doesn't change either, so I'm curious if the sensor is bad or not

My guess would be fuel level sender. If the fuel level sender is not working properly I would imagine it would throw the miles to empty and fuel level off.

Is there a specific place where dyno runs etc are posted or are the just scattered through the forums? I want to take my b6 to apr stage 3 but I'm a little confused about their dyno chart on the webpage. It claim 328/340 hp/tq but thats at the flywheel. Actual bhp is going to be considerably less, right? What does it take to get around 250 at the wheel? 300?

Spray some pb blaster in there and try again tomorrow.
On my avant that screw will also accept an 8mm or it may be a 10mm socket.

I would just test fit the bolts without the trans mounted. Just put the spacer on and see how they fit. Last thing you want is to put the wrong bolts in the wrong holes and crack your bell housing

That's what I'm saying lol . But it sucks cause they all different lengths and I think I mixed them up with different bolts . So I'm going to end up buying a new set

The longest ones are on the passenger side of the car if I remember. I drew a picture and measured each bolt when I removed them so I knew where they were going when it was time to mount the trans back up.

The positive terminal on my battery keeps corroding. What is the proper fix for this? I've used a wire brush and cleaned the terminal and the post. I also put dielectric grease but it keeps corroding and eventually prevents my car from starting.

Hows the connection on your starter? Maybe thats dirty, thus making the battery side dirty?

That window lock button only locks the rear windows, not the front. I would say you might have a problem with that switch as well. This should help ya get to it. Click (http://a4mods.com/index.php?page=webcontent/pages/windowswitches.html&category=4) If your switches are peeling I wouldn't even bother with it until you have a replacement switch. I got a knockoff from someone on here in the classifieds for around $25 and it looks and works like OEM.(except not peeling like OEM(yet))

Yup exactly! you would think if you clicked the window unlock button it, it would unlock the rear windows for the people sitting in the back but it doesnt.
I have to hold both the unlock/luck button down so those sitting in the back can put the windows down.
Ill try what you have linked and let you know what happens. I really appreciate your help and fast responce. Beer on me [hail]

The pipe that connects to the TIP is a plastic elbow with two different diameters. Mine was cracked and ended up ordering a replacement, as 'home depot racing' did not have what I needed.

The DV ports are 1". [up]

audi_nightrider

I'm not actually running the stock TIP, so I don't have that plastic elbow anymore. I'm currently using the TIP that comes with my frankenturbo and the DV from frankenturbo as well.

The inlet from the TIP that connects to the DV is already starting to rip(glad no air leak yet) and I don't want it totally just get ripped off.

Trying to prevent this by getting a metal tube/plastic tube to put in between the TIP and silicon hose(which will would be connected to the DV). I'm planning to relocate my new DV(Evo DV) as well, just near the intercooler pipes at the bottom. I was originally planning to relocate the DV to the other side of the intercooler but I'm running meth. I have nowhere to place the DV just before the nozzles -_-.

I'm pretty sure the DV is not designed to recirculate meth lol.
