    Nav Map Update Problems

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I purchased a '10 S5 last month (my first Audi) and I wanted to have the nav system maps updated, so I made an appointment at my local Audi dealership for last Friday to have this done. About an hour after leaving the car at the dealership I get a call from them informing me that they can’t perform the map update because they didn’t order the activation code, so we rescheduled for Monday. When I picked up my S5 on Monday (and paying over $400 for the map update), I got the car back home only to find out that the map software is still the 2010 version (NAR 5.3.4) instead of the 2014 version (NAR 6.8.2). I called the dealership and informed them of this. They apologized and said they have no idea why the map software upgrade was unsuccessful. Now I’m scheduled to bring it back tomorrow (Wednesday) for another attempt at the map update.

I don’t know if anyone else on this forum has had a similar experience like this, but I hope this is not representative of Audi vehicle service. As my first experience with Audi service, so far it has not been a very positive one.

Audi service is hit or miss really. I brought my car in for service and they did a great job but after a few days the oil level too high warning comes on. Bring it back and they suck the extra oil back out. Go home and when I get there I smell a burning oil smell. They managed to get oil all over the manifold and all down the side of the engine and did not even try to clean it up. You will soon find out that an independent shop can do the same job as audi service but for a better price and actually care about the job at hand.

I read a similar thread in another forum room. I believe the MMI has to be updated before the map is updated.

Thanks for this info. I've lived in my current location for 23 years and owned lots of different cars in that time, so I know of a couple of independent shops that do good work on German imports. Since my S5 is just out of warrenty, I probably won't be taking it to Audi for most service needs, but I figured for the map update, they would be my best choice. Hopefully, my third trip to Audi will get 'er done for the map update.

I had the same experience last week, also with my '10 S5 (negotiated the map upgrade as part of the deal to buy my wife's '14 Q5 TDI). Spent 3 hours at the dealer the first time, and as with you, was told it was "all done". Having made a screenshot of the version, I then looked and sure enough, same version. Went back in and got the same "we have no idea" that you had. And, as someone else observed, it required the MMI's being updated prior to the map update...all of which is now done but all of which required a second visit (with a loaner this time...I wasn't about to wait around). Maybe it's because of Audi's very high cost of map updating that they have so little experience in doing it correctly...or maybe they're just incompetent.....

Thank you! This is very helpful information. Tomorrow morning I will be sure to remind the Audi service rep to update the MMI software before they perform the map update, so hopefully they will get the job done correctly this time.

    UPDATE

Audi was (finally) able to get the map update done on my '10 S5 today. My thanks again to btlalum for his help!
This morning when I dropped off the car at Audi, I advised the service rep to first update the MMI software before performing the map update. Of course they didn't believe me and they had to try and do it "their way" first and did a MMI system reset. That didn't work. Finally, they did as I advised (updated the MMI software before performing the map update) and were now able to successfully update the nav maps to the 2014 version (NAR 6.8.2). The service tech said this was only like the second map update he ever did. (At a cost of $433 it's little wonder they do so few map updates). At least they let me use a 2014 A6 loaner the last two times they had my S5.

I noticed one big difference right away. The interstate entrance/exit I use everyday driving to/from work is now on the updated maps. That entrance/exit didn't exist in 2010! Aside from that I have only driven about 10 miles since the map update so I'll let you know after I have some more road time to give it a proper evaluation, but it also appears that more street names are displayed than before.

I took a pic of the Nav version screen before and after the update. You can see the MMI software and Nav (map) software versions. Yes, this is the 3G MMI with the HDD.

I can now say there is a very significant difference between the 2010 and 2014 versions of the map software. The 2014 version (6.8.2) definitely displays a lot more street names at the same zoom setting (e.g., 75 yards) than the old version. The new version also has much more 3D content (buildings, etc.). IMO it was definitely worth doing the update as I think the latest version is a considerable improvement over the 2010 version. The only thing I wish Audi would have included in the update was the display of the speed limit when on a highway like the 3G+ system does.

Thanks for the update. Bummer about the lack of speed limit (saw it in a loaner and really enjoyed that), but tempting to do the update.

OK thanks for that info. I'm on MMI version HNav_US_P0118_D1 with map version 8R0060884AD NAR 5.5.5. Looks like it may be worth the effort to get the new map data.
Strange that you did not get updated to 8R0-060-884-BL NAR 6.9.2, apparently a Q5 owner got updated to that version (see here).

Also wondering if that MMI update brought any significant changes or fixes....

There probably are at least some changes with the MMI update, but I have not noticed any yet. I'll post any changes that I discover.

OK thanks. I can't figure out the logic in the software version number. So far I can find a reference to these versions online:

    HNav_US_K0110_1_D1
    HNav_US_P0110_D1
    HNav_US_P0114_D1
    HNav_US_P0118_D1
    HNav_US_K0133_3_D1

Edit: asked, and answered in post below.

P = production version (ie applied in the production process before the units get into customer's hands), K = customer applied (ie Audi have released an update disk with the new firmware).

Aaah great, thanks for clearing that up. So hopefully we'll learn of some new features (or fixes).
