16 OE Sport Exhaust Installed On 13 S6

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Was wanting to do something on the exhaust side for a little extra growl since the pre-face lift is so dead quite. But did not want to lose the valve system nor risk any drone. Almost picked up a Milltek valvesonic system but thought I would try this OE sport exhaust that I came across from an Audizine member first, as it was far less expensive.

I did not need really need the first section that comes off the factory down pipes, as I have a set of APR downpipes I plan to install at some point. Also, pretty sure that first section has nothing to do with the improve sound of the sport system, and it made shipping the unit a little bit more feasible

I also had to ask the seller to have the system cut to make it shippable as well. There are pre-determined factory "cut points" on the exhaust where if a dealer needed to replace a section they could, as opposed to how it is installed from the factory as one large single piece.

    Factory sport exhaust

Cut at just the right spot of easier shipping

Sport exhaust on the left and OE 2013 exhaust on the right.

It is basically a plug and play system, except one aspect. The valve assembly on the driver side sport exhaust is not in the same location as my 13. On the pre-face lift both valves are after the muffler and on the sport exhaust the driver side valve is before the muffler. So an issue is that the wiring harness will not reach without some improvising. One could cut and extend the wires, but instead I was able to separate the two harness that come together to get enough slack to pull the harness back to the new valve location. I will say that it is a PITA to get the wire to stretch that far and it takes every mm you can get for it to reach. Separating the harness took 1/2 the total install time, including accidentally cutting one wire and soldering it back to together

The harness separated and stretched as far as possible and re-wrapped. But I did get it just long enough to be able to tuck it up behind that small section of liner so it was not laying on top of the muffler.

So prior to receiving the exhaust I assumed I was going to have to get it welded back together since it was cut up for shipping. But luckily the seller cut the exhaust at just the right spot, as well as included the clamps from the front section. So instead of welding I was able to simply butt and clamp the sections back together, just like how the front section is from the factory

All installed and wrapped up. Took about 3hrs with a lift, not being in a hurry and half of that time messing with extending the harness

Downpipes will bring the exhaust to life! Stock the cold start up has a little growl, warm start up is fairly tame.

Yes, happy with it. Only had it on for a day but initial impression is a little underwhelmed on the increase in sound. It's a nice little upgrade but nothing substantial.

Also don't seem to get the pops and bangs that I am pretty sure I have heard the face-lift sport exhaust cars have. But thought that might be in the tune with the fueling so I am not surprised

but my plan was never to leave it like this. I have downpipes to install and or can delete the resonator(s). I was tempted to replace the center resonator with an X pipe prior to initial install but resisted I so I could hear it completely stock first

Should have done the exhaust mod before going to the expense of putting the sports on there - Centre box delete and replace with X-pipe, and front resonator delete, replace with straight pipe on the original system.

I and others have said it time and again, if you want something louder, that allows the V8 to growl, this is the way to go, and at a total cost of $2-300.

I do like the black tips though

The exhaust mod is a mixed bag. For some people it results in drone, for others it's not loud enough, and yet others have complained of a reduction in low-end torque. For me, it ended up costing about $1k total, and while a nice mod, wasn't nearly worth that much (the mod itself was about $500, but getting AWE tips welded on ended up costing another $500+). That said, I think OP should have just stuck with the factory exhaust, because the DPs will pretty much be responsible for most of the sound he'll be hearing based on reviews.

Spoeculation about the popping being tied to the tune has been mentioned in a few other threads. Perhaps you are the first to validate the theory though - not sure I recall seeing any other posts about doing this. I was thinking of going this direction too - but might spring for the AWE instead. i already have the suitcase delete, etc. It's ok - but nothing great IMO.

To revise my initial impression I posted previously, I have now had a chance for a few short drives and I can certainly hear the increased volume and improved tone.

It was a little deceiving at first, because at just idle, or revving, or normal driving it really not that much different than my stock 13 exhaust (at least from inside the cabin). But in dynamic mode and being into the throttle, at 3K rpm's and above it indeed growls very nicely and significantly more volume.

And the black tips look much better than the silver ones.

but to reiterate as I posted previously. My intent was never to just run the sport exhaust with no other changes. I would not have gone through the trouble just for that. At minimum it is getting resonator deletes but probably also paired with downpipes.

Still have not installed my APR downpipes. Was all set to do it this past Saturday, but lost power at the shop from a storm and I ain't doing it without my lift. Not sure when I will have another full free weekend day to do it, so may just pay to have them put on

But I does seem that the sport exhaust continued to get louder and sound better over the first month it was on. My theory is that the two different places where the clamp connections are get sealed up over time with carbon deposits, as I think they were slightly leaking at first making the sound not as good or loud

Install the apr pipes before modding the system. I think you will be happy with the results. Mine sounds awesome. I can can also confirm that the sports exhaust has an ECU component. My "stock" flash did not bring back my exhaust popping that I had prior to tuning. Im certain that there is a sports
exhaust specific software version from the factory. Ive got a 2016 with the factory sports exhaust.

Can you clarify what you stated on the exhaust popping?

You had exhaust popping when stock, flash a tune, then flashed back to stock, and lost the popping when back on the stock file?

Correct. Had significant deceleration rumble and pops, especially on dynamic mode upshifts, before tuning.

Flashed to stage 1 and this was gone.

Flashed back to "stock" file provided by tuner to troubleshoot a performance issue and still gone.

I put about 300 miles after each flash and rumble didn't go back to factory levels.

    What tuning software?

Would think if you put back a completely stick file, the popping would return if it is indeed something in the factory tune

Agree. This makes me wonder if it's not actually the same file.

EPL. Using their software to ID the software shows an exact match to before tuning. Maybe it's a vag com option that needs to be turned on?
