Questions you thought were too dumb to ask

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've seen this thread in a few other forums (b6 and b7) and thought we could use it here in the C7 section also.

This is a place to ask any question you want about your car that may not be worthy of it's own thread, there is no question too dumb. If you read something in this thread that you have the answer for, please chime in.

I'll start with something I've been trying to figure out for a few days now.

Are the LED door sills standard in all C7 S7? I can't seem to find this mentioned as part of any package in the media kit but in shopping around I realized not all cars have this feature (or it's not turned on?).

Standard on the early C7 S's. I know it was specifically mentioned in the 2013 media kit, but haven't followed since then.

I checked the 2013 S7 media package and it only referenced aluminum door sills.

Good to know it's standard. Do you know if it's powered by a switch or mmi setting? A couple cars i looked at didn't illuminate when i opened the doors.

As far as I'm aware, it's all automatic (at least mine are)

The illuminated door sill trims and displays (Audi MMI and driver information system) greet the driver with the S7 logo.
Illuminated door sills are also show as standard on the S7 on pages 20 and 21.

My '17 A4 and A7 have illuminated door sills (without the S or RS insignia obviously). My erstwhile A6 also had it. I'm guessing it is part of the s-line package?

I saw a thread about this a while ago. If I remember correctly, only the Prestige package comes with the illuminated door sills. And yes, they are automatic and only come on when it is dark outside. I assume they are connected to the light sensor for the automatic head lights.

I have squeaky front brakes. My car was just in for service & winter tire change and my brakes are fine - 60% life left in them. However they squeal at any gradual stop.
The service guy told me this is normal for Audi's and that's it. I personally don't think my expensive car should have permanently squeaky brakes.
So a stupid question - should my 2015 S6 have squeaky, loud, embarrassing brakes?

This... and since all C7 S6/S7 were Prestige it may have seemed like it was standard on all prior to the facelift when it was really a part of the Prestige.

Most do. The huge rotors don't help.

There are a few threads dedicated to discussing replacement pads. Most agree that you can only pick two qualities: stopping power, low dust, low noise.

The OEM Brembo pads have great stopping power, but are loud & messy. Kind of suboptimal.

A4 is Premium plus. A7 is Prestige.

I just checked. Both have the S line insignia on it. I was mistaken about there being nothing written on it.

Illuminated cills are part of the optional Ambient Lighting package, at least in Europe. They are not standard fitment. (I think standard for the RS7)

It's actually quite a common problem. I have the same, after about 5000 miles. Really annoying, and embarrassing when your pulling up outside your own house!

I'm considering changing pads to something with a ceramic content. Audi dealer told me to live with it!

FYI I found that in 2010 they listed illuminated step lights as an add-on LED package. I'm not sure when they became standard, but that package is not in my new S7 but I have the illuminated step panels anyways.

It's not unheard of for ceramic brakes to be squeaky. The best way to combat this is proper brake bed-in procedure.. Basically a series of going fast and slamming on brakes to a NEAR STOP (not full stop) will heat and clean the rotors and pads.

Why would you go off of a 2010 audizine article for an A7, when the media kit I linked to for the actual release from Audi, on the actual year the S7 was released, clearly states that it was standard? Oh well...I tried to help.

Because all relevant information should be shared, since numerous people here are confused on what package it was part of. I understand you said it was standard and was referenced in that doc. I appreciate your help, but it's still nice to dig a little deeper to find out when it wasn't a standard option.... things like, when is the cut off year for standard vs non standard are details that us enthusiasts like to know.

I had squeaky brakes on my A6 too. Car had less than 18k miles when I sold her, was always babied. I always took my foot off the accelerator much before reaching a stop sign/red light and let the momentum reduce before I applied brakes. Pads had a lot of life left (the dealer said he'd never seen a car with that much life still left). Yet, it almost always squeaked (even in the summer).

Ceramic brakes squeal more? Atleast, that's what I heard.

    I have a dumb question.

Is there a setting to enable parking distance sensors automatically (besides reverse)? Can be annoying to know you're close to something intentionally but it helps when parking to have the system become active on it's own vs. the button or only start up automatically in reverse.

The phone book import system is screwed up on most Audi MMI systems.

It has real problems if you have multiple numbers under a single name, i.e. Mom - Home, Mom - Mobile etc.
It's further messed up because on most phones there are actually two phone books. The one in the phone memory, and the one on the SIM card. The important numbers l input manually, and assign a name that l have voice control over, so l can hit the speech button and say "Dial Mom Home" etc.

Here's my dumb question... I have a 2013 S6. Why, after all these years and miles, does it still have such a strong leathery smell when I get in it?

Don't forget about the cloud contact lists too like Gmail for android/iCloud for iphone.. and Facebook contacts too. Our cell phones do an awesome job at integrating all of these contacts into a single list although they really live all over the place.

I pick up my 2013 S5 premium plus on Friday. Does it have DVD playback and is there a mod to do it while moving?

Probably because you hardly drive the car

Just picked up a 2013 S7 and was wondering if there is an OEM engine warmer available? The car sometimes has to sit outside and I'd like to plug it in to help the warm-up in the morning. Thanks!

The steering in my 2015 RS7 does not feel as light as I remember in my 2013 S6, even though I have it set to Comfort in Individual mode.
Is there any way to make it even lighter for low speed driving, parking, etc?

I don't know if this helps but even in my '17 A7, the steering feels heavier in comfort mode than my '13 A6. The A6 was very light whereas the A7 feels significantly heavier (like if the A6 was put in dynamic mode). But even though it is heavy, feedback is poor. My A4 has the best steering amongst the three.

Yes there is. It's an option in the colder parts of Europe. I've seen the components come up,as a kit on eBay a few times, but not sure what it takes to fit. Pretty sure there must be a NA/Canada option somewhere....

    Have a look here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-Engin...sAAOSwirZTvVYT

If I see the OEM one on eBay, I'll post the details here.

Thanks for the info! Figured the Canadians would be ones to get the option, if it existed.
