I heard that if you take off the knob and spray electrical connector cleaner it can bring it back. If not I might have a spare knob

Mine was really bad volume would drop to zero when trying to turn the volume up. I removed it and cleaned it with electrical cleaner and this completely solved the issue is my A6 last year as well. Still working good worth a shot.

Grill question here- Is the front camera mount on a c7.5 able to be removed and put on another grill that didn't have a camera from the factory. Both grills are OEM with the slats/bars, thinking about swapping black optics grills between an a6 and an s6. TIA!

I have an exhaust question. I don’t know much about the OEM parts market but here it is. Is there value in OEM exhaust systems? I am replacing my system on my C8 RS7 and want to sell the original parts and not just discard them. Thank you.

Probably better to look in the C8 section to see if there's a market for them, the rear assembly is definitely not a C7 compatible thing.

Make sure the product used is PLASTIC SAFE, for example CRC QD Electronic Cleaner. A regular contact cleaner that is not plastic safe may melt the plastic!

If your volume knob-and-stem is available, I might be interested. Dealership has told me that cleaning it isn’t the issue and that I need a replacement. The quoted amount was $2100. Ha!

OK. New to me 2018 A7 competition pkg. I just noticed the little LEDs on the exteriot door handles that shine down. The one on the driver's door is out. The other 3 work fine, and the audi ring lights on both front doors work. Is this normal or is the little door handle led nfg?

Thank you! Found a youtube of the handle removal and led replacement. Simple enough. All that plastic, it can wait till springtime. 26* F. and dropping to the teens this weekend.
Also found the vcds lighting output test to check it.

How do you remove the lower side grills.
I did a quick search but didn't find anything. Has anybody done this, seen a step by step, or a video?

Yank them, they snap into place. You're in Texas so probably not cold enough or old enough plastic to worry about brittleness

I'm not sure that's a concern. The only way to test tie rod ends (when not obviously broken) is to put someone in the driver seat with the car running. Watch closely while you have them turn the steering wheel a quarter turn left to right and observe for any odd or uneven movement with the joint.

Thanks for your input. I've been chasing a low-speed clunk on the driver side recently. This was the only clunk I could reproduce, but it doesn't necessarily match known tie rod failures. 12 and 6 o'clock shake felt solid, 6 and 3 o'clock had minimal play. Lower ball joints held up against the crowbar test. The boot on the outer tie rod has a small tear so I have replacements from 034 on the way. It will be a cheap fix if the noise goes away, otherwise I can cross them off the preventative maintenance list

Hope that solves the problem. If not, I'd look at control arm bushings, front sway bar, subframe, motor mounts.. and if all else fails, just turn the music up until the problem gets big enough to find. lol

They did not fix the original clunk concern, however the steering response and ride quality has much improved! A lot of vibration and harshness was being transmitted through the bad ball joints on the tie rods to the suspension & steering.

New sway bar bushings and 034 adjustable end links on the way. Plan to replace the bushings first to see if they are to blame for the low speed clunk.

Is there any real resale value in OEM exhaust systems after removed for an upgrade. Namely, just took the system off my C8 RS7 and not sure if I should just scrap it or try and continue to sell it. Thank you for any constructive recommendations.

The C8 RS assembly in the back is way different from C7, I was chatting with a C8 S owner about the RS counterparts and he didn't really make it seem like the A/S owners were really after the RS exhaust parts. S and RS being different engines entirely is different to the C7 scenario where it was a lot closer relation.

Thank you. I figured it was a small niche market for it and it would probably only be a coincidence to find someone that wants one at the same time one is available. Just seems a shame with how expensive Audi parts are new, to just scrap it. Just too cumbersome to store it and wait for interest. I’d give it away free if someone came and got it. Just so I know I wasn’t wasting something so potentially valuable to someone.

My 2017 S7 needs air filter replaced (87k miles and last replaced around 40k?). I have ordered a K&N E-1983. I am totally mechanically inept. I have searched all over YouTube and cannot find a video that shows how to change the air filter on my car. I know where it is located, but it is not clear to me what all I need to disconnect and anything to watch out for when I do this. I only found a video that appeared to be V6 A6.

Any pictures, videos, list of tools, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated. Also, the K&N is coming on my Amazon subscription March 5, so let me know if others have had any bad experience with that filter and I can get a different filter.

I had all my fluids done yesterday at my Independent, but skipped the air filter because I wanted to try K&N. They didn't mention plugs until I was leaving, so I could have them drop it in as plugs are due, but I would like to do the air filter and even cabin filter myself.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Thank you BasicBlack! That looks simple enough that even I should be able to do it!

Questions you thought were too dumb to ask

I have a 2014 A6 that I retrofitted power closing trunk. At first I used the old button from my B8 Avant but now I got one from a 2018 S6. The lock button won’t do anything. Is there a wiring difference or coding somewhere? The trunk close still works just fine. IMG_8522.JPGIMG_8521.JPG

IIRC, the lock button was not available on pre facelift C7's. I owned a 2012 C7 A7 which only had the single "close" button inside the hatch. My 2016 C7.5 S7 and subsequent C7.5 RS7 both had the combined close and lock button. Your 2014 pre facelift C7 A6 may not be wired for the lock button.
