Remove Center Console and Center Trim for Audi A7 C7

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Like many folks on here I wanted to change my center trim piece but unfortunately, this job requires the entire center console be removed. Since I was unable to find detailed instructions on removing the center console I decided to take some pics as I went and hopefully help the next person. I am not an expert so if I missed a step or someone has a suggestion please post on here as well. Hope this helps!

    1. Start in the back seat by removing the rear AC vents
    2. I used a trim removal tool slid into the side of the vent. You can also use a Audi/Merc pull tool (looks like a hook) that you pull from the inside of the vent. It slots into a hole in the side, you can see it in the pic

You should be done with the back of the console and now we need to move to the front of the car.

    1. Make sure your car is on a level surface
    2. Block your wheels with a wheel chock in case your parking brake is worn
    3. Start your car and engage the parking brake. Then shift the car into Neutral
    4. Turn the car off. (I then took the key out of range of the car so I did not mistakenly turn the car on while any of the electrical components are disconnected). DO NOT START THE CAR WITH CABLES DISCONNECTED. This will cause fault codes that you will have to remove.

Correct, I also re-wrapped my carbon vinyl. I originally wrapped the center trim in place and wanted to make it a little cleaner.

    that looks superb.

is the trim piece on the passenger side dashboard the regular aluminum? Or did you wrap that a color to match the interior? It looks different...in a good way.

    Thanks

The dash trim is the original aluminum but I am going to pull that off soon and wrap in carbon vinyl as well.

Are you talking about this lighting?

If that is what you're talking about then you do need to remove the console and trim. The light is under the trim so it needs to come off first. On the plus side, removing the console looks harder than it is. It goes fast. If I had to do it again it would take 15 mins. Prob take an hour first run with these instructions and the right tools.

Excellent write-up! Swapped out the Dark Walnut trim for Piano Black last night. Very straight forward, took just shy of 2 hours from start to finish. Would've been quicker, but I was doing it in between cooking dinner. ;)

Took me a few hours to complete. Took my time with the console panel removal. I had trouble removing the center console. Would not just slide out. Eventually something gave and it came out. Couldn't tell you how. Then putting it back in took some force to get the back bracket into the proper place.

Additional small note: to release the MMI port door you will need to release a tab under it. You can see it in the picture above on the bottom left. Reach through the small area from the back and press it to the right with a finger while you slide the door off.

    Thanks again for the walkthrough.

So I followed these steps, and after putting everything together I have quite a few problems:
    - AC doesn't work
    - Speedometer doesn't work
    - Steering wheel buttons and handles around it don't work
    - Windows only work when holding their handle
    - Parking sensors don't work

I've checked all 3 fuse boxes and they seem to be alright. Any ideas?

Managed to fix the problems. Turns out if you tighten these bolts too much it causes numerous errors with the car.

    Hi

Do I have to go through every step above just to remove the silver trim to wrap it or can I follow just part 2 as I don't want to remove the entire centre console. How easy does it all go back as worried once I remove it all that it wont go back and then I will be buggered. Also don't want to put it back together to find warnings like above and then have to remove it all again. thanks

For a C7 this is very easy and you just have to pop up the shift boot. If you have a 2011 your car is actually a C6 though (at least in the US).

Great write up. Really appreciated. Took me exactly 45 minutes from start to finish to swap my center trim piece. All other trim pieces took a total of 10 minutes. This one.... 45 minutes thanks to this write up. Otherwise it would have taken me 2-3 hours to figure out all the steps on my own. Thanks Borg54.

Does anyone know if there is a fan or dampener in this center console that could restrict air flow? I’m only getting partial air flow for rear climate control. Looking through this thread cannot confirm I see a fan unit. When the car is off, I kind of hear a struggling fan. So I keep thinking that’s my issue.

If I recall correctly, there is only a snorkel that goes below the tunnel up to the vents. Don’t think there’s a fan.

A6 C7 Front Armrest Stuck upright

Big thanks to Borg54. The great write up allowed me to quickly dismantle my A6 front central armrest after I left my Viagra in it and it got stuck in the full up position :-) I all seriousness if you find your armrest gets stuck upright the attached photo's might show you the problem. The paul has torn the ratchet in half. Overloaded. I could not see a way to fix the problem but was able to find an Ebay replacement for £40.

THANK YOU!!!! your very detailed instructions kept me from going insane. I followed your guide to remove the rear of the console to find one of my kids had dropped a paperclip inside one of the vent holes, that kept making a metal to plastic noise every time I took a turn :)
    yay problem solved :):)
