    The Ultimate Coilover Poll

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Currently riding on H&R's with stock struts (gotta get rid of em!)

Narrowed down to Stasis vs Vogtland.

Car is a DD and I dont mind the harsh ride, Audis have got to handle better than this.

    Re: The Ultimate Coilover Poll

I would not saythe ones you listed are the tops in quality, you forgot Ohlin's which by every account are unbelievable but also big $$$$.

With that being said I did not have $3K+ to spend on suspension so I ended up getting the Vogtland GT's. I have to say they are not bad for a street car that will do some Auto-X and a track day here and there. I have not tried any other but did a lot of research. I am running them with a Neuspeed 22MM rear bar and the car is very nicely ballanced now.

    Cheers,
    Jim

    Not enough choices...

I'd vote PSS9's or 10's, or the the stasis/ohlins combo...

    Re: The Ultimate Coilover Poll

As many guys know on the forum (at least I would hope) that stasis has specifically made the their suspension for the B5. As to which is better well it all depends on how much money you are willing to part with. The tracksports are about 1895 last time I checked and the Vogtland GT's are between 1295-1395 from startup racing depending on if a group buy is available. (I believe some advertiser listed them on sale recently for 949, might be wrong on price but in that ball park. I moved from the Stasis Street sports to now my Vogtland GT's I really like them however it seems like to me that due to high spring rates in the rear that this is causing some clunking when I go over bumps. Never had that problem with Street Sports. I have been told that there are 3 remedies, place cardboard between the springs in the rear. replace all the screws that hold the spindle to the sub-frame, and lastly because ride height is lowered on most everyone that has complained about this the exhaust begins either rubbing against something which makes the clunk. That is what I know about the GT setup. I have only heard good things about the trackssports in terms of none of the clunking sounds. But I do hear that the tracksports are pretty miserable to drive on bumpy roads like here in western mass. If you track the car stasis if you want everyday driveability the vogtland with a nice beefy rear sway bar in my opinion ~ 22mm.

Ohlins are the Ultimate. The best of the "cheap" suspensions is probably the Vogtland GT's

Hey Jared how often do Ohlins need maintenance? I have the 800/1000 setup and I'm switching to 600/700 because it was a little too stiff and now I'm gonna start driving the car everyday.

I've had the suspension for 2 and a 1/2 years but have only put about 6k miles(only street driven) on them. I'm having them switched out at WMS over the weekend. Is there anything else I should have done or worry about? Thanks.

Same here I was shocked at how good the ride is with the Gt's. Also I think I'm riding a little lower than some which impresses me even more that they don't go to absolute shit the lower they go.

Thanks to this thread I now know the difference between the regular Vogtland and Vogtland GT.. I always seen people mention then loved the GT but when I searched online and from vendors only found the non GT one. Its a good thing the holiday sale from one of the sponsors ended before I had the cash to spend on coilovers as they had they didnt have GT's which I thought were the same ones at the time. Today I went to startupracings site and read all I needed to know and couldnt beat the price so I jumped right on it :) I couldnt afford the price for Ohlins and heard nothing but great reviews about the GT's so thumbs up to this thread!!

Startup has the Vogtland GTs for $1,199.
They're on the list, Along with SS, DTS and chrome mirrors.

Poll threads have always made buying easier.
Just search till it hurts then put up a poll of your finalists.

    Re: The Ultimate Coilover Poll

There are alot of suspensions to choose from, it just depends on what you want out of your suspension. Are you going to track your car (not drag racing)? If you are then I would go with a custom Tein set up for around 1500 or the stasis tracksport but cost a little more. You have three spring choices with the Stasis kit and what ever spring rates you want with the Tein (I could take care of that for you). Both of those have rebound adjustability in which the Vogtland GT's and Stasis streetsport do not.

If you are just driving on the street then a Tein Basic or maybe a Vogtland kit and the Stasis streetsport (I have no experience with those later two however) would get the job done. No need for a expensive kit (unless you want the bling points) for the street as its just a waist of money.

I do have many years of track testing the Teins (among many others, mostly on BMW's and a few other makes) in which I have found to be awesome on the street and track. I have help tune a few Stasis Motorsports on the track but for the money its just not worth it unless you are racing full time. I have never tuned or installed a Vogtland kit so I can't give you any info on those. PSS9's are terrible for tracking (I have pulled many off to replace with a Tein or custom Tein set up). Anyway, with trying to keep this short just figure out what you want to do with your car and go from there. If you need any help or have in depth questions I would be glad to help out. And good luck with your choice.

Thats odd.. I have not heard anything good about Teins on our cars, more on the lines of "I cant wait to get rid of this setup"..

I have not heard much about Teins at all on the Audi sites. It was the same way with the BMW forums until people started using them. And being that they are a Japanese manufacture most of there kits aren't set up for "American style tuning" (i.e. a little, to much higher spring rates in the rear), so that is why some people dont' like them and its simpily cause they don't understand how to use them. To be honest with you I have seen most of there kits that are being offered in the states have now gone in that direction and I believe it to be for that reason. I don't think Audi is on the top of there lists to be revised but that does not mean you can't order custom spring rates and valving. Its only $120 per axel to get different springs. I have also noticed that Tein is one of the few manufactures of suspensions to have a spring height that is matched to the shock body (i.e. when at full droop there is still a small amount of preload on the spring and it is not unloaded). Of course all of your big manufactures have counted for that but you are paying big money to get it.

Now I'm not here to preach Tein or any other manufacture. I am just giving my opion on what I have personally had experiance with and what I have seen first hand. My intetions for my S4 are strickly track days and some street use.

On that note I am about to put together a custom set up from Tein for my S4 (like I did with my M3) so I can get some testing in. I am hoping to have over 2000 track miles on it this year at the track days my company is putting on, but I might be to busy to do the full milage so we will see.

I had the Tein basics on my B6 A4 and they were hands down the most bang for the buck. They're still probably the most comfortable CO I've had or rode in so far. I was going to get them for the S, but when I looked up the spring rate it was the complete opposite from what it was on my B6. If I can get back into a B6 I'll go with the Teins again.
