What is your experience or understanding of buying coilovers for an Avant due to the heavier rearend? Should we have a higher spring rate in the back or just set the height a bit higher?

I am looking for advise on our unique Avant situation and what people are happy with. This is for my A4 of course.

They work fine. I've run corner balanced KW V1 coilovers at various heights and they were fine. Plenty of track time too.

I'm now running Shine Racing suspension with 400 lb. springs and Bilstein HD struts that may or may not be custom valved. It rides better, handles better, and sits high enough to get through the winter.

Re: Opinions on Coilover Suspension for Avants.

I have Stasis SS on my B7 and they are pretty damn low without the ability to go much higher in the rear. it seems to be a common issue on the koni/stasis even with the stasis spacer. I am actually going to look into adding more spacers in the rear.

with that said, I love them. Great ride for the street and not as aggressive as some.

After a bunch of research when I made my purchase and after reflecting a bit, I think your decision should be driven by what your plans are and what you're willing to spend for that goal. If your plan is strictly aesthetic, you should be fine with any set of c/o's unless there is a specific avant model. If you plan serious track time, the real expensive set ups (e.g., Stasis ms kit) will allow you the ability to play with height and spring rates.

Assuming you're more in the former department, check out the Vogtland GT kit from Startup. The kit was actually based/tested on Startup's B5 S4 avant. You may also want to shoot them an email for their feedback. Either way, suspension was one of those mods that made a huge difference (akin to the "chip").

Re: Opinions on Coilover Suspension for Avants.

FWIW, I tracked the car extensively for a couple years. Ran it with the balanced coilovers and with stock sport suspension. Both setups had H-Sport bars. Stock suspension was on street tires, coilovers were done with the same street tires and also with r-comp and track pads. Unless you're going to run the sticky tires with aggressive pads it just doesn't matter. The car was a couple seconds quicker on the coilovers but just as much fun without them. The bars were necessary with the stock sport but not with the coilovers.
