The comments on that forum by the BMW guys are interesting to read. Begrudging acknowledgement mixed with cheap shots at Audi. Lulz.

There's always cheap shots. Esp since the Audi S6 is cheaper and is better overall car than the M5. C&D agreed as well.

Well, seems like they're bashing their own BMWs too:

It's true. BMW has abandoned their roots. New M cars are buttery soft GTs.

I am absolutely stunned that the RS5 overcame a 100HP deficit between both cars. Not to mention the immense torque deficit, as well. Wow.

    Great post.

It is funny with BMW posters bashing their own M division.

I would do the same if I was a M owner, but I do realize that BMW is trying to sell more cars and it seems to be working (their most recent unit #s are up 10 point something percent from last year).

But, Audi's most recent sales units gained 15+ percentage (if I remember correctly). Audi is catching up in worldwide unit sales.

In any case, the RS5 numbers are good as it should be. And it did beat the M3's time, but not by much (1 second).

I was surprised at the closeness of all of the cars' times. The fastest car was no more than 10 percentage points faster than the slowest car (excluding the police chasers).

The police cars were laughable in terms of lap times.

I know I am being overly nit-picky here...but hey, thats what forums are for....

someone tell me if i am wrong...

    Chevy Camaro SS 1LE - 3.01.5
    Jaguar XKR-S - 3.02.1
    Porsche Boxster S - 3.04.2
    Audi RS5 - 3.04.3
    BMW M6 - 3.04.7
    BMW M5 - 3.05.2

If you watch the video on c&D's youtube page which relates to these numbers, they go through each car one by one. They talk about "price as tested"...a lot of these cars weren't base models and had some performance upgrades....which i think the boxster S and jaguar had.

The RS5 tested was a base model. Now....all in all, there is no big deal in interior amenities, etc....but what about the upgraded, ceramic breaks package? That's the only performance modifications for the car (I don't believe the sports exhaust actually adds any performance).

Does anyone else think the RS5 leapfrogs the boxster S if the driver is given a track prepped break set? Am I crazy?

Seems like a reasonable argument. If they're driving the hell out of them during the runs, the brakes could be heating up and fading and clearly that's what the ceramics are offered for (plus the slight weight drop).

I wish they would have shown that Lexus going through its paces.

The S6 got spanked by the M5. Shows how different the environment makes to the results: street test = S6, track test = M5.

I'd still rather have my manual S5 over any of those.

Too true. It is important to have factual evidence that the RS5 beat the S6. I actually was able to get an allocation of the RS5 because the previous allocation was for ANOTHER person. But, that other person changed to a S6, and I took his allocation. Lucky for me. Unlucky for the other guy who took the S6 (that is slightly more expensive and has poorer performance).

    Audi S6 - 3.09.8
    BMW 335i sedan - 3.13.2
    I'd call 4/10 second on a 3:04 minute lap a dead heat. Still, it's impressive that a $70k RS5 can trounce a $110k M6, a $92k M5, and the outgoing M3.

It's hard to say whether the RS5 is a bargain R8 or a spendy S5, but this clears the air a little.

I'm guessing the S4 would come in around 3:10 right behind the S6.

    EDIT: LL2: 2010 Audi S4 > 3:10.8 http://www.caranddriver.com/features...s4-3108-page-9

Despite 87 fewer horses, the S4 was 0.4 second quicker than the [B7] Audi RS 4 from the second Lightning Lap.

    +1

Make no mistake people GM is not to be trifled with on the track for the past 8 years......they show it can be done with a push rod engine at that. However I still think the S5 is the greatest !!!!

Problem is that while it seems to be a great track for for the money, driving it as a daily driver sucks. It does have a HUD though which I wish the S5 series had. Oh well, maybe for the next gen.

    Yes, true.

But, this is only based on performance.

In the real world, obviously, there are other factors.

Another important factor is reliability and quality of the car.

In this arena, I hope you and others will agree that RS5 and Audis in general have better reliability and higher quality of workmanship than GM cars.

GM is catching up, but they are still behind.

They were not especially flattering in describing the RS5's track performance. The first line of the article is what surprised me. Why did the RS5 feel so "slow"?

The section ends with "...0.3 second before the mid engined R8..."; should anyone actually care how it "feels" if it faster around the track than an R8 (which no one argues is a great car)? Maybe if they got comfortable with the active rear diff and actually nailed the throttle to get the car to rotate, instead of the part throttle they said they used, the time may have been quicker? Maybe Audi did know what they were doing with the package they put together... fast, grippy, safe and quicker than an M5 around a track, plenty to hate about that, no?

You can't have everything. As long as the majority of the comments are positive, that should be good enough.

    Exactly!

If the RS5 is 0.3 seconds faster than the R8 (which is a car twice as expensive).... Then the RS5 proved its mettle. A $80,000 RS5 versus a $140,000+ R8.

And, it's faster than a M5 and a M6, and those cars are more expensive, as another member pointed out.
