My First Build - PSi Concepts 20G

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
After 2 years of owning my first car, I have almost completed my first build. In addition to the turbo swap I had a bunch of little odds and ends that I wanted to do at the same time and ended up deciding to pull the engine. I figured doing each individual thing with the engine in the car would be more frustrating and time consuming than pulling the engine and having ample space to do them all at once.

We’ll start with the mods list:

    Engine:
    PSi Concepts TD05H-20G turbo
    PSi Concepts T25 exhaust manifold
    PSi Concepts downpipe
    PSi Concepts oil lines
    Custom coolant lines
Earl’s oil cooler with 6AN lines
    ER Comp FMIC
    ER power steering cooler
    ID 725cc injectors
    Maestro tune
    Custom 2.5”->2.25” exhaust
    Bosch Sidefire sparkplugs
    42DD stealth catch can
Forge splitter valve set to full atmospheric(likely to change)
    Custom intake with K&N filter

    Suspension/Brakes/Drivetrain
    Bilstein PSS9
    RS4 sway bar
    SPC adjustable CAs
    WIlwood 4 piston 330mm fronts
    Stasis 310mm rear
CM FX400 6 puck clutch and LWFW
    USP Motorsports metal clutch slave
    BBS RGRs 18x8
034 street engine and tranny mounts
    034 snub mount

    Electronics
    Optima yellow top
    “Big 3” wiring upgrade
    Alpine INA-W900BT
    Alpine PDX 4.100
    Alpine SPX-17PRO (front)
    Alpine SPX-177R (rear)
Podi dual setup – oil temp and boost
    Custom V1 concealed display
    Custom iPhone vent cradle
Custom fiberglass 10” subwoofer enclosure for trunk cubby(subwoofer & amp to come soon)

    Cosmetic
    S4 bixenons
    USP doorblades
    DIY brushed aluminum trim

I'm sure there's somthing I've forgotten but oh well... I started the engine portion of the build 2 months ago and finally got to drive it last night. Thanks to Dan @ RAI, the base tune he gave me already runs solid which was one of my biggest concerns starting this and he answered countless other questions. I wanted the car to be driveable from day 1 and last night’s test drive was flawless. Current tune is going to be at 20psi. Have never had a "fast" car and I want to get used to this power level before I up it. At that point I'll do internals and up the boost. Also, a huge thanks to my friend Emil(S4evr) for being in the garage with me every day wrenching and fabricating some parts for me. Only have iPhone pictures of the engine bay right now but some better ones are soon to come.

    Intake setup:

Got sick of the oil temp sender being in the oil drain bolt and ended up drilling and tapping my own location for it:

Almost ready to go back in(lines have been rearranged since):

Cooling down after last night's test drive

Interior. Have since put the oil temp gauge in the right pod that's empty in the pic.

very nice setup! there a bunch of us running these now. Interested to see your numbers etc.

*suggestion - get rid of that 007 splitter. Its garbage. I had it on my car and couldnt handle the boost. Switched to a 004 and much better.

Yea I think that's going to be the route I end up going. It still needs to get dialed in but I don't see myself keeping it for too long.

When I get the tune finalized and a couple other things squared away the plan is to get to a dyno and see what I'm putting down. I'll be sure to post up the results.

Surprisingly it's pretty stable. Can definitely handle a spirited run I'm planning on remaking it though. I used the original vent with body filler the first time around and I think the stress to pop it in/out coupled with the temperature difference between heating and AC caused it to crack right along the joint to the plastic. Still functions fine... but doesn't look too good.

Not sure yet. I'm hoping in the 270-290 range with this tune tweaked a bit but I won't know til I get to a dyno. More worried about getting everything running right first though so it might be a little while til I get to one.

On 20psi, you think? I mean I'd be very happy if that's true, just trying to not overhype myself haha.

That shouldn't be a problem. I did 300awhp on the mustang dyno at ESP in sterling MA. You should have more flow than me. They have reasonable rates and run lot of audi's if you need a quality dyno shop.

on 20psi? not sure. I did those numbers at 26psi.

But i think you can do pretty good with the setup you have. I like everyone else is wondering the potential on the 20g on the 1.8t's There is 4 of us running or getting ready to run 20g's, i'm the only one with numbers and i think they sucked so, hoping the rest of you can make good numers so we can see what the MHI 20g can do.

Considering the potential of the 18G & 20G you should be able to improve on that.
But the key is to get everything working perfectly.

Did GIAC ever release the file they worked on with Jeff for these turbos? That is the biggest problem I see for y'all is you have no solid off the shelf software to start with.

Welcome to the PSI concept turbo..Very nice build sir..Just a suggestion get the FSI coils makes a whole lot from take off and not so sluggish.

Regarding GIAC, I think Jeff is running GT30 series turbo so probably not available for 518/520 turbo.

I got my first revision from Dan last night for the tune. Base map had been set at 13.5psi to make sure the injectors were set correctly and the revision has the boost turned back up because the injectors look pretty good. Should be able to reflash and go out for some logs tomorrow, if not tonight.

Is it a significant upgrade from the Hitachi bolt-downs? I picked those up right when I got the car as it blew a CP the first day I had it.

The Hitachi bolt-downs are rock solid reliable, but they do not throw a very hot spark. The FSI CPs throw a hotter spark allowing you to open your gap up to .040-.045... in the process, they are supposed to yield a little more power and better throttle response.

I can't confirm but switching from Rev D to FSI was significant for me from take off. I probably didn't gain any horse, but I really like when you step on the gas the car response a lot better.

think the only ones to have that file are Jeff and Kirk. Both running Gt30's. So no software/tuning yet for the 20g. J-fonz wants toDyno Tune my car and Popo's car, once all our issues are resolved.

I know this is a bit of a necromancer thread, but how many other folks are running TD05H-based turbos? Lately I've been taking a hard look at doing a bigger turbo based on its chassis.

I always have thought the TD05 turbos are pretty rad. They're cheaper/simpler than a Gt28 but still offer really solid performance. Pretty damn bulletproof too.

Is PsiConcepts still around? I know their website is still up, but I've heard almost nothing from them or about them at all in almost 2 years...

Yes they are alive and well. I was considering that setup as an option before shrinking my budget and going with the F21L. As a previous 50 trim DSM owner, I really like the TD05 setup. My 50 trim Talon AWD went 12.6 @ 111 on 15 psi and 91 pump lol.

Oh man, haven't updated this in a while... So here's a quick one.

I'm no longer mafless. TT225 MAF and a tune by Daz. Runs solid at 20psi. Car is currently on stands while I put a new clutch in and rebuild the transmission. Also have new exhaust piping as my flex pipe has a hole in it and I wanted to switch to single muffler, single inlet, dual oulet. I have a terrible drone in the car that I believe is due to having no resonators and dual mufflers in the stock location.

Cosmetically I got euro bi-xenons, front S4 seats, front USP bumper, rear S4 bumper and I wrapped my doorblades in carbon fiber. Performance wise I switched my rear Stasis brakes for S4 brakes and I got the 034 front sway bar endlinks. Got the FSI coil packs and switched to NGK plugs as well.

I bought a spare block that I've been waiting to build but I'm not entirely sure the route I want to go, most likely a 2.0 EFR. We'll see.

I'd definitely be interested to see other TD05H based units/kits though all I ask is a different exhaust manifold. My only gripe with the PSi one is the difficulty in installing it. Both the mounting points to the block as well as the mounting points to the turbo make it really hard to access and, even then, making sure it was secure and nothing was going to back out was a chore.
