    Where to get switchable power

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Bought a tap-a-fuse and followed nicks guide but it won't power on.

I'm not sure if it has to do with using a 10a and the 2 a in the hard wire kit the passport came with or what.
So where do I tap switchable 12v power

I used fuse #31 Reverse light. It should work for you too.

I think I used the instrument cluster or the fuel pump. If it wasn't so cold out I would go check.

Do you leave the fuse in the hard wire kit in-line?

Wow the mute button looks great in that piece. Is there a DIY on here for that? It seems to sit very flush.

    It's not much too it.

I wish I had taken more pictures while doing it but here goes.

    1) Take the button apart. There is a single screw that holds it in place. The Passport piece is sticky so it can be peeled off. Take it off and store it somewhere safe.
    2) Take the button out of the plastic unit, find a drill bit that is as close as possible to the hole sizes. The large hole is bigger than 1/4 but smaller than 5/16th. 5/16th would be a safe drill bit to use, and the smaller two are I want to say 3/32 drill bit.
    3) Get some masking tape and stick it over the buttons. I punched through the holes myself, but that's really optional. Get a sharpie, or a pen or something that will show up clearly. Mark the holes, and outline the circle button since it looks like [__) basically
    4) Take your masking tape, line it up on the piece that you are using and carefully double, tripple quadruple check, once you drill it you drill it.
    5) Make sure what you drilled lines up. The LED's are moveable to an extent, that helped me out a lot.
    6) Get some stick tape. I used 3m double sided tape and the velcro it came with. I had a slight issue with the large mute button getting it aligned properly so I could press it in but what fixes this was packaging peanuts. yes, thats right. I shoved them in enough so that it kept the button PCB board pressed downward so I could press the button.
    7) Extra step really ** Once it is in there for sure, glue it down. I used crazy glue on the pcb to the plastic piece so I know it's not going anywhere.
    8) finish the hardwire.

Still need to know where to tap power. :)

^ interesting. Where I have it now is suppose to be the instrument panel, if I take the fuse out the dash goes out....

i'll try what you said though.

The other questions is do I leave the in-line fuse that the hardwire kit came with in, or do I cut it out and solder the wires together?

I left the fuse in there I tapped from the back with a quick splice that came from the kit.

I am not sure what you are trying to say. Can you edit that post or something...

    This is what I got
    http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...entifier=32416
    This is the hardwire kit
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...W92A1WYWWWVG46
    It's got a built in 2A fuse.

I'm not sure if I what you are suppose to do is the following.

Pull the fuse I want to use. Stick it in ( there are two spots, totally confused by that ** that's what she said)
Hookup the crimped section and when I turn the key, i should have power. But it doesn't power on.

Or if it's cut the existing 2a use out and use the one from the fuse panel only.

    I'm sure i'm overlooking something.

This is the diy I followed cant really explain im in class but I didn't use a fuse tap like you did I went straight to the wire in the back when you open up the fuse box .audi-b6-b7-s4-diy-valentine-v1-hardwire

Edit: is your detector set to auto on? can you turn it on manually with the way you have it hooked up?

What I did on my truck that you might want to do as well:

I used one of the fuse taps (low amperage like what you guys did) to be the trigger on a solenoid that had the main lines ran to the battery. This way I could hook up as much as I wanted and it would still only turn on when my car turned on.

Ah okay so he used a wire from the fuse box.

I was trying to avoid tapping a wire like that.

    Finished it up.

used fuse 15 I which was instrument cluster. it doesn't auto shut off but after 4 hours ... I thought it would kill power immediately, so i'll play around with the fuses and find out which will auto kill it.

Ran the rj-11 cable up the a pillar to the unit and grounded it by the fuse box.
