I would be plugging in either an ipod or a droid x, so all I need is the standard 3.5mm jack so that I can directly plug in either.

This. I did it in my car using the A3 aux port routing it into the center console using all OEM parts. One of the best things I did to the car

Well you can get a kit like a dice or dension that is built for the ipod/iphone and has an aux in as well. That way you can charge your ipod while you are playing it. Run a search on the DICE or the DENSION for more details.

Here's a link to buy the DENSION:

No, ipod and aux input don't come with RNS-E. At least not mine.

He's asked how to add the aux input to the RNSE. Sounded like a simple question to me. Yes, the dension kits work but this is what he meant. It uses all OEM parts and is what I did to my car and is super clean. I don't take credit for writing this as I saved it a year ago and don't know the original author.

If you already have RNS-E and want to add AUX you will need the following parts:

    OEM Aux-in 3.5mm plug (8J0 035 475)
    4 pin harness that plugs into Aux-in plug (8E0 973 754)

**If you don't need the OEM look, just buy any 3.5mm plug, RCA plugs, or even an ipod dock plug, depending on what you want to connect.**

Grey 32 pin AV connector for RNS-E (1J0 972 977 G) (you may have this already on the back of your RNS-E, mine didn't and used the older interface

3 female repair wires for the 32 pins AV connector (000 979 009). You will clip these in half and use the ends to snap into the seats of the Audi connectors. Then grab some of your own wire to run the length to wherever you put the aux plug.

Aux In Left - pin 22 of AV Connector
Aux In Right - pin 6 of AV Connector
Aux In Ground - pin 21 of AV Connector

Recode the RNS-E to XXXXX?X to enable Aux input using VCDS (vag-com)

    ? = 5 to enable AUX only
? = 6 to enable AUX and SAT radio

This mod will also work with Symphony II+ and Concert II+ head units also. Just look on top of the head unit for the pin-out diagrams and connect accordingly.

On the 2009 A3's, Aux is already installed standard. If you want to upgrade to an RNS-E from a Symphony or Concert head unit, all you will need is the 32 pin A/V connector, swap 3 wires from the Aux-in. If you have Bose, an additional wire swap is need to ground the Bose.

All these parts can be sourced from your dealer for relatively cheap.
There is a nice write up here:

I get THAT, but I was suggesting an alternative that will allow him to charge his ipod.

Thanks for the answers guys, very helpful. However I was not clearly with exactly what I wanted, I definately want the AUX input and now know my options thanks to you guys, but I would want it in the center console, as pictured below. If anyone has a DIY guide on how to wire it so that it looks like this, that would be awesome. This thread has the pic:

Correct, I DO NOT care about being able to charge my ipod while using it. I just want the AUX input in the center console, thats it. If anyone has a write up on how to put the AUX input into the center console, I would be very grateful.

There was a unit that worked in tandem with devices like the DICE or Dension, which was basically a bluetooth receiver. Never tested it myself.

Check this. Easiest thing to install and hooks right into iPhone's headphone jack. Pretty much the same Aux input the new A3's come with. You do have to tell the RNS-E via VAGcom to accept an aux in though.

I found this on Ebay for ten dollars:
    -------------------
Hi! I found this on eBay and thought you might like it! Check it out now! Female 3.5mm AUX Audio Input Cable for Audi VW SKODA SEAT MP3 iPod iPhone Music http://r.ebay.com/JOVK68
    -------------------

Does this work with 2007 RNS-E? This seems to be the plug that is used by some of the aftermarket ipod input units etc.
I noticed the AUX RNS-coding mod has a long skinny looking white pinout and you have to use the three pins as shown here in this thread:
    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...S-E-%28pics%29

Wondering if this other input is another thing all together. Would this allow two different audio inputs?
I didn't expect to find this in my search but now it deservs clarification.
I noticed some systems have a plug that plugs in between the factory harness and looks completely different than the AUX mod in the other thread on here.
    Any thoughts anyone?

It appears to be a smaller square with 12 pins/ 6 pins wide plug in the ebay listing which claims to connect to rns-e vs the longer white 17 pin long plug that you have in the write up that we know installs and codes in well.

I am thinking that this is some sort of inline 12 pin plug that does not actually recognize as the auxilary in. it probably gets in line with another channel like the navigation or something of the sort.. I didn't look into it yet. I figured I would post on here since this is a hot topic and there are two different units claiming to accomplish a similar task in two different ways. We should differentiate and let people know which option has better sound quality etc. I'm guessing it does not recognize as external audio source active, that is my guess at this point.

Best DIY guide to add AUX input to RNS-E navi

Honestly just do the DIY that's posted up. It takes no more then an hour to do and to get a clean look for it drill a big enough home for the aux port. There's no need to go buy those fancy sounding kits just for an aux port.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

And it's the same for the RNSE deck as well

It costs $50 just for the auxiliary port without any of the wires or connectors from what I can see.
I searched the part numbers provided in the tutorial and it would be much more expensive to put it together yourself vs. buying it from Kufatec. Maybe about $80 for the parts and then assembly vs buying it assembled from kufatec for $55

Then there are the $10 ebay options for both types of inputs. The 12 pin and the 34 pin connector. Both on the back of the RNS-E and both used to put in an AUX port.
No one seems to know the difference between the 17 pin wide and the 6 pin wide connector but both are used to input an audio signal to the RNS-E but seem to accomplish this in a different way.
I will write it up when I have the answer.

Krmass you can go to radio shack and buy an aux port for like 3$, you put two wires from audi at 11$ a peice, cut one wire in half because both sides are pinned, then a spool of wire that's maybe 5 dollars and then splices which are another 5 dollars, then comes to about 35$ not 50

That will be a stitched together sort of setup and definitely not oem. That will also be lacking the little flip cover and actual audi looking port style..
and only a 15 dollar difference and I have to drive around buying things?

No need to make a quick purchase or cut corners. If it was $10 for a near OEM setup that would be a different story. In this case that is a fair price and searching on ebay returns some results with a few different options with actual RCA inputs which is nice. These are all about $35-45 and manufactured well.

It is more of a debate of buying the oem kufatec unit for $55 or the European aftermarket RCA input style for $40. In my opinion, not worth piecing it together for $35 or more dollars now that these places offer it pre fabbed

Without a doubt the way that is posted for the DIY people do cut corners or will quickly throw that shit together. I myself personally am an a electrician so I make sure that shit is done correctly and will last. It's all preference on how you want to put it in honestly with being comfortable playing with wires or just simply going the plug and play route

I hate to resurrect such an old thread but I just did the aux in mod on my 2006 A3 with RNS-E with Navigation, SAT, Phone and I have an issue with it.
    What I did :
Recoded VAG in the RADIO coding to show xxxxx6x for AUX and SAT radio. Should I have used the AUX only option which is xxxxx5x ?
Hooked up my 32 pin connector which has Left audio to pin 22, right audio to pin 6 and ground to pin 21 to a radio shack 3.5mm audio jack, RS part number 274-0249.
The head unit recognises AUX in and now displays it as a source option.
When I connect a source to it (ipod) using a 3.5mm audio cable I get sound to front and rear but only on the left side. If I use the fader to the right there's no sound at all.
The 32 pin connector is a new addition to my setup, for this purpose only. Before adding the AUX in there was no connector on the head unit, just the socket with the pins.
    Questions.....
I read somewhere that I might have to recode VAG under the Navigation coding, thoughts anyone ?
Could I have a fried pin 6 in the head unit which supplies right channel audio from the 32 pin connector?
Faulty audio jack ? How could I test it ?

Sorry, bit of a noob when it comes to electronics, I know my way around a bit but this has me stumped.
