01119 - Gear Recognition Signal. please help diagnose

hello, im a first time audi owner, im 19 and im having transmission issues w my 2003 Audi Allroad Tip i recently bought. just in the more recent month starting December i have been having issues reversing. 95% of the time the car will only idle backwards and not drive backwards. i can rev the engine full range and not reverse any faster. it will also not go up any slope in reverse. this apparent slipping only occurs in reverse, all other gears are working, however, when moderately accelerating from a complete stop there is a slight delay and surge in first. i have noticed in some cases where the car will drive backwards if i throttle it gently but if i suddenly become agressive or the car hits an incline in the reverse gear the car will jerk backwards as if something just let go and then free rev.
i did run an auto scan on the car with my Vag-Com tool and this is the result:

    No fault code found.

    01119 - Gear Recognition Signal
    35-10 - - - Intermittent

i cleared the code and power cycled the car two ignition cycles like my mechanic explained to me over the phone and to watch how soon the code returns. a day later wen i needed to use my reverse, it seemed to work, i managed to successfully drive reverse about 100 feet then the transmission stopped transferring the power to the wheels again and my engined just free as reved as i throttled it while i idled backwards. i reran an auto scan and got the above results again. does anyone have an idea as to what is going on? right after without clearing the code i drove my car backwards and forwards on my street while using vag com to log transmission input and output speeds, gear position, TC slip speed, and vehicle acceleration. i experienced the same loss of driving power in reverse while testing but i did notice that as i shifted thru all the forward gears and the reverse the ECU always knew correctly what gear the transmission was in according to what Vag-Com reported in the log.

can anyone help me identify what is going on and explain me what the ABS code 01119 - Gear Recognition Signal really means and what could be a possible cause? iv searched this forum and other Audi sites and got a few different solutions ranging from a faulty abs switch to the transmission range sensor, the accelerometer located apparently under the back seat causing differences in the calculated acceleration the traction control uses compared to the actual or a wire from the transmission to the TCU that could have a moist connector that needs drying. iv also read a mechanical solution such as a broken reverse drum that seem to plague Audi and BMWs from 2000 to 2004 with a ZF5HP19 series transmission due to a design weakness.

any ideas? my mechanic is telling me to lean towards trouble shooting my wires near the transmission and ill do that but i want to get more suggestions. i could just as easily take it to my mechanic to troubleshoot but im really wanting to do it on my own to learn and fortunately my mechanic fully supports me in that goal and is trying to help guide me but he only has so many ideas...

early indications of your transmission going south. be prepared to have the trans rebuilt or replaced. there are a few knowledgeable trans experts on the site that may be able to give you more specific details as to whats failing inside. I would kindly ask TozoM8 for auto trans advice, send him a PM and hopefully he can answer your questions.

It is a tipycal problem with the 5HP19. I just bought an allroad with a same problem. The reverse drum blows the lip on the clutch pack and slips in reverse. You will need to have it rebuilt.
