Black eBay Silicone hose kit ordered last week, so that will get here soon I imagine. Also plasti-dipped(i LOVE this stuff!) my doorblades today. They are drying, maybe Ill wash my car tomorrow and then take some pictures of it.
After I put the doorblades back on, I FINALLY washed her today(its been about a month since the last one), actually cleaned the engine, and then did a little photoshoot.
Nice looking Allroad, did you gut the downpipes yourself or did you pay to get it done? I want to do mine but have only found write-ups on the B5 S4 forum but all MT.
Frank--no, I never got the vibration figured out, I guess Ive just become used to it.
blkrhyno--I paid a friend who had done it to a few other cars to guide me through it. Basically he did everything, I helped out with what I could, but he had all the tools, garage, and knowledge of what and how to do everything. I would recommend this route, or just have a local shop do it, unless you know you have the tools and the technical know-how. I would have been so screwed without him, it is a seriously BIG job. It took us about 10-hours all in all. In theory its not a terribly difficult job, in practice however, its a very involved and long job.
New hot-air intake, with a zip-tie job worthy of the Gods!
AEM Dry-flo cone filter. 7" long with 3" inlet. 3" inlet was too small. Should have gotten one with a 3.5" inlet. Needed to hit up Lowes and get a rubber 3"-to-3" coupling(designed for PVC pipes with an ID of 3.0. Live and learn.
Currently its really heavy and will sag until the maf/coupling touches the coilpacks. This was unsatisfactory. Solution? ZIP TIES! Yea, its being supported by zipties. Looped a few around the front of the filter, and then attached that to the stock plastic air duct, and to this metal thing coming off the back of the headlight.
So youre thinking, "what a dumbass, why wouldnt you just leave the stock intake?"
See that red thing in the back left of the engine bay?? New catch can! I decided that was the best place to mount it, and to do so required a cone intake(kind of an excuse to make an intake). Catch can will get hooked up this weekend, more on that later.
But youre still thinking "well at least get a heat shield. all youre doing is sucking hot air"
I know. This is temporary. I will be making a heatshield this weekend or next. Will also figure out a more permanent support system for the intake.
So get stoked, Ill be making a few DIY writeups soon!
Cold Air Intake--Made out of a trash can. Ballin on a budget. See my writeup in the tech section for more details.
I give myself an 8/10, I think it looks really good for the overall cost. Most people wouldnt know it from a expensive intake.
Oil Catch Can--Used a Saikou Michi Stage 1 OCC with 1/2" welded nipples. Catch can itself is really good quality, for a reasonable price, read really good things about it. But I probably should have ordered 3/8" nipples instead, I couldnt find any fuel/oil 1/2" hose, so I had to get heater hose. Then I ended up using 1/2" to 1/2" nylon splices, and dremeling one side down so it would fit in the spider hose. Made sure it was going to be sealed with silicone.
I give myself a 5/10. Kind of a cobbled together job. Im not super proud of my work on this, so I wont bother with a writeup.
And then I figured I would paint my y-pipe while it was off. I started with some rustoleum engine enamel(silver) but I did some really shitty prep work when i sanded it down, but used way to harsh a grit so my first layer looked like poop and I had to wet sand the living piss out of it. My second layer looked better but still not perfect. More wetsanding, and a 3rd layer. Looking ok, but it wasnt very silver, more grey. I decided to try a layer with this silver paint I had laying around. I think it looks killer, but it cant be clear coated and its delicate. Hopefully it holds up.
And Ill give myself a 8/10 for this. It ended up looking really nice, but I dont know how well it will hold up over time. Also my prep work was sub-par and caused me a lot of hassles.
Productive weekend, quality of my work could have been better.
I hate this thread!!! I am in love with your wheels!! lol I have the exact same color AR and I think those wheels would look awesome on mine too hehehe. Seriously though, that Air Intake was an awesome job!!!
PS: I am glad you pointed out the difference between both oil caps, because I now can see I have the updated one.
I also just noticed you mentioned a vent boost gauge. Could you post a pic as well? I want to see what that looks like before I settle on a PODI or a vent one. Thanks :)
Ohh that's nice!!, I was thinking of the center vents but I like this better, a little more inconspicuous!! Thank you very much.
PS: Did you hack up the vent yourself? or purchase it like that? Sorry for the many questions.
Hacked it up with my dremel, no one makes a vent pod for the A6
I had to cut each piece individually and then glue it into place. In retrospect, I should have glued it solid while it was still together, and then purchased a 52mm hole cutting drill bit, but I didnt even know they existed until the other day. Would have saved me a lot of time, and probably would have looked better since some of my vent fins arent straight.
I like this position because it doesnt ruin the symettry, and running the boost line was pretty easy. Still very visible while driving.

Okay Thank you. I am going to have to hack mine up too, as I have the same exact boost gauge waiting to be installed. You are right, I have been looking for an a6/AR vent-boost gauge but no one sells it.
Updates:
eBay hose kit is partially installed. Some pieces fit, some dont. Quality was good, fitment was not. Oh well, Im a bit bummed, but not disappointed given what I paid for the kit.
Bought a DevilsOwn DVC-30 Stage 2 kit from a friend last week. Got some more parts I needed from DO today, Ill install it this weekend if I dont go to SCCA Auto-x.
I am a BIT new so excuse the "retard" question... What is the "Devils Own" Stage 2 kit?
Also can you post a link to where you got the ebay hose kit and maybe some pics of it installed? I really want a a new hose kit but am worried about your fitement comment...
Thanks,
J
2000 A6 2.7MT - currently gutted, a few parts left, PM me if you need anything.
DevilsOwn is just the brand; water/methanol injection kit. "Stage 2" because it's a progressive kit, amount injected varies propotionally to the boost pressure. http://www.alcohol-injection.com/dvc...age-2-305.html
I'll post a picture of the hoses when I get home later today. eBay seller was sniper9898

Thanks,

i got to see his samco knockoff hose kit and dont waste your money on it
not fitting properly can be bad down the road; dont need a hose popping loose while your at full WOT and boost
spend the few extra bucks and get either a real samco kit or apr hose kit
Rockin' the Rockies
'01 allroad, 147k, slightly more modified. . .
however, once i get the meth kit installed i dont think im going to bother modifying "stella" anymore--in the end she will always be a heavy pig. so i think i am going to save my pennies, get my motorcycle license, and buy one of these hopefully next summer:

you know what they say, once you go black.... okay NM lol
seriously though I have always contemplated something like that but My back is not like it used to be
I'm still young so no back problems, yet(I do have knee problems though lol). And since you are only "young and stupid" once, so i might as well take advantage of my "stupidity" as an excuse to buy a bike.
Really though, I've heard the ninja 250r's are perfect starter bikes--they look cool, they're fast enough but not *too* fast, handle great, and allow you to "grow" with the bike. And since I'm only 5'8" and thin the bike should fit me well.
But in the mean time the Allroad will certainly be able to sustain my need for speed until I can afford it. Besides...the bike doesn't have quattro or heated seats and steering wheel for the winter!

I had been periodically checking my catch can "hoping" to get some liquid but all i would get is the smell(vapors i guess). Anyways, I just opened it today and actually got some physical results. I got a small batch of this vomit-mixed-with-egg-yolk-looking stuff to come out of the can; and yes, it smells just as awful as it looks. Its not very much though, maybe enough to fill a film canister(odd reference, i know) for 3 months/4000-ish miles of driving. I might end up uninstalling it and putting the airbox back on.
