Lightbulb JHM just acquired a B7 RS4 for more R&D and track abuse (Offiicial build thread)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This is the official JHM B7 RS4 build thread for our new in house RS4. We will cover each and every modification and repair we make to the vehicle as we build it to push the 4.2l V8 performance to new levels.

Specs on the car as purchased on 8-01-10:

    - Completely stock 4.2l V8 FSI
    - 70k miles
    - 100% bone stock except for: H-Sport F+R sways, KW-V3 c/o system(soon to be for sale), 5mm(F) 10mm(R) spacers.
    - Sprint Blue exterior
    - Black interior with CF trim
    - Car runs well, No codes, will note cf buildup on future update

    Story on purchase:

Looked around online as well as in the auctions for a good deal on a RS4. Could not find anything locally but one caught my eye in the LA area. So jay and I decided to make a road trip to check it out/purchase if everything looked good. We made the 4 hour drive while working(jay online, myself on the phone) to the dealership. It was a non audi high end dealership, the rs4 was actually one of the cheapest cars they had their in the midst of other high end europeans.

Inspected, test drove, checked codes and everything looked good. The body and interior was in near perfect condition. We noticed the front end had been repainted but they did a very good job on it and you would not be able to tell without looking for it. I offered the salesman cash and we basically got it down to what they paid for it at auction. We then made the 4 hour trip back up to the shop with a quick pit stop at harris ranch to celebrate.

Here are a couple quick pics Jason's wife took:

Plans for this car performance wise:

    1. Remove Trans, Install our stg 4 clutch + LWFW, Install shifter trio package, change trans fluid, install trans mount, Reinstall Trans and Change engine oil.

    2. Removed Intake manifold, check carbon buildup, clean if needed, check for porting options, start on intake spacers.

    3. Once we know the intake track is free of carbon we will then start on our tuning. We are actually very far into the development and release of our tune, just a couple refinements before it's finalized. We already have this tune up and running on a couple of our customers cars.

    4. We already have started on an exhaust system, this will be a full header back system with the option of downpipes.

*EDIT: Header back system meaning from the headers back(downpipes and catback) and not replacing the oem headers in the near future*

    - We plan on making a Lightweight crank pulley in the near future as well.

    - Our goal at this point will be to get the car into the mid 12s with minor bolt ons.

    5. This step I will leave for your imaginations but I will say it has the words FORCED INDUCTION in it.

Only time will tell and the more you support us we can do even more with this car.

    Cosmetic mods and suspension:

    1. Complete Front 380mm brake kit, plan on a rear bbk as well but that will be at a later time.

    2. Finish JHM/? Coilover system, we are currently working with a very high end suspension company

    3. Find a set of lightweight wheels

The possibility of more performance upgrades is out there, if you guys would like us to modify and/or make a certain part feel free to let us know.

If you have any questions including questions about our tuning feel free to email either [email protected] and/or [email protected]

Thanks again for all of your support!

Great car. Great post. Its going to be nice to see options now for the RS4 guys. Looks like companys are now going to have to do more work then just post hype and dyno sheets if they want to sell to the RS4 guys now.

Confused, why go FI after you've already put other parts on? Why not build the other parts around the turbo/SC?

For lightweight wheels look at Yokohama racing Wheels. 18 inch should be around 19lbs and 19 inch should be around 21lbs. Put me down for the lightweight pulley and intake spacer. Headers really would have to produce awesome results before I would consider them, the stock ones are pretty damn good and Super Sprint is having a hard time getting more power out of theirs over the full rpm band. As for F.I. we all know Turbos will not fit so I am guess Centrifugal Super Charger (or think VORTECH V-5 F-TRIM SUPERCHARGER ) and some new oil cooler/cooling system :P As for tune, I am on it :)

Spacers, and anything to keep the intake manifold and/or intake tract away from engine heat (perhaps a shield around the MAF) would be HUGE pluses!

2nd on the headers. The try Y design isn't going to leave power on the table like the B6 S4 did. So Its just not going to be a good investment. Espically after seeing the RS4 headers stock. There more then good enough

You want to build parts to support the turbo and Supercharger. They did this on the S4 with the supercharger. They have the headers to help the car make gobs of TQ down low. They have the oil cooler to make room then they have the crank pully that came out of the need to design a custom crank pulley for the blower then the itnake manufiod and spacers are to keep the temps down and to free flow the intake system so they can keep the boost down.. Its fricken PERFICT. well thought out

Awesome to hear we're going to have some dedicated development from you guys. Look forward to everything you guys have to offer.

Currently having the Stage 4 Clutch & LWFW installed with the Trio Shift package... can't wait to take the car out this weekend with the new goodies.

That's my point...if they're throwing supercharger-specific parts on before the SC is installed, they're not really going to get much.

I was hoping they'd chime in.

so why wouldn't they build out what they could when their parts are currently available? That's like saying "hey, i'm not putting headers on my b6 s4 because the supercharger isn't on yet since it's not going to give enough gains."

Just wanted to mention something that I forgot in my original post.

I bought this car to help support the people that support us. RS4 guys have been buying JHM products for a long time now and they have been asking for more support. Much unlike other companies that make a quick buck doing one mod on a car that does not belong to them and/or lean on a customer car in the hopes of making a good dyno sheet.

We decided we need to get a car and beat the piss out of it. Actually own the car so when customers call we already know the little issues with the car we drive daily. If we are going to help push the platform we are going to do it on OUR own car and not put you at risk.

This is our dedication to the platform.

Quote Originally Posted by dparm View Post

That is exactly how we build our parts actually. Notice the b6/b7 s4 platform, almost all parts work with each other. All parts enhance one another as well. We know that not every wants and/or can afford every single bit for their car, so you have the option to pick and choose to suit your needs and budget. So if one day you decide to step up to a bigger power adder you will not have to sacrifice another part you paid for in the past.

Oval tips yes, valved no. This will be a performance exhaust system only, no gimmicks or tricks to help sell a system.

Thanks for the heads up on the wheels! I am curious to see if my 18" ssr comps will fit, they may be close to clearing the 380mm kit. I am also eye balling a set of 19" ssr comps as well but I will definitely check those wheels out.

Sorry if there was some confusion in my original post, when I stated "header back" I meant from the headers back but not looking into replacing those at the moment. Maybe when we get heavily into the s5 platform but we will cross that bridge when we get there.

Thanks again for all of your support from day one!

That is the plan, I think the gold shielding we use on the b6/b7 manifolds will help a lot as well.

Suspension companies name does not start with an M ;)

To everybody else thanks for the support! We are very excited to see the real potential of this car!

Exactly. Look at the B6. The intake makes almost 20whp and 20wtq you don't need a supercharger to have an intake and you don't need an intake to use the supercdharger but if you upgraded your parts you made lots more hp and built a solid foundation.

Its part of the performance primer. I love he fact that all the parts work together regardless of how far yoiu push the limmit.

So you can get great gains with the intake regardless of if your close to stock or full built blown or TT motor

I can virtually guarantee you'll have problems with 18's almost none will comfortably clear the 380mm brakes... i've got the Brembo GT 380mm kit on my A5 and I barely clear some 19" wheels.

How the hell did my credit card end up on my keyboard? I read "JHM just acquired a RS4" and it just appeared out of nowhere.

ha ha.. FTW that was funny as hell. As everytime they come out with a new product I find myself talking to my credit card and trying to reason with it

Congrats on the new purchase and I can't wait to see what you guys come up even though I don't have an rs4. I also love that you guys picked up a car with quite a miles just like the s4 and not a garage queen with barely any miles on it.
