    RS5 Pedals installed (sort of)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I ordered the RS5 pedals from Europrice few weeks ago and got it this week. Decided to install it today after reading various forums on tips and instructions as to how to remove the old ones and install the new ones, I thought I was ready to get it done. I started around 6pm today... (Photos maybe crappy in some cases due to the iphone's flash)

    Here's the pedals:

    Pre-install work:

    1. Remove the brake pedal, which was probably the easiest part for me today. Use both hands, I just yanked it out and slided it down and it was out.
    2. Remove the dead pedal, which wasn't as bad as it seem from other sites. Unhooked it at the top, yank it out with some strength. I did not get all 5 clips at once, sort of did them one by one and I only broke half of one of the clips. After that, I got my hands between the side panel and the hinge on the side of the dead pedal and worked it out from under it.

So after all that, I started to do my install.

First, I thought for sure the gas pedal would be the easiest. Everywhere I have read, it tells me the gas pedal is just a slide on, but for the life of me, I cannot get it to work. I must have spend 30 min and I STILL cannot get it on fully.

Here's a picture of the back of the gas pedal:

The picture is actually reversed, but basically, the bottom right corner would end up covering the top right corner of your gas pedal. But I can only get the long (full side) side and the bottom of the pedal to go into place. I gave up after 30 min since it seems to hold it's place pretty well and until I can come up with a better way of getting it on, I am leaving it for now.

I had less trouble with the brake pedal thankfully, I sort of worked the rubber a bit to make it looser and easier to work with. It's actually easier to install than the S4 one that came with the car. Just make sure the metal plate slides into the gap on the left side (when facing you) and also at the bottom of the pedal, then just put the two plugs into the slot. You can only really feel the left one since the right one is where the pedal is attached to the car, you can stick you figure through the hole to feel and make sure the plug is in properly but I didn't have any problem with that one. I had a problem with the left plug as it didn't seem to want to go in and it kept bending in a way that I cannot push it in. Eventually, I got it to work around 10-15 min from removing old to installing new.

Then on to the dead pedal. I wasn't sure what to do with the hooks that goes behind the kick panel on the side. At this time, I had to decide between trying to pop and loosen the panel up to install it properly or just putting the dead pedal in without rehooking it under the side panel. At the end, I chose the easier route because I see no harm in it. It will hold in place since it still has the 5 clips that attach to the floor of the car and the clip that attaches near the VAG Com cable and the light. At my next service, I might try talking the dealer into fixing it for me.

Here's how it looks after all it done.

You can see a small gap to the left of the dead pedal, that part is where the side panel is suppose to go into to lock it into place.

When all was set and done, it was 8pm. So it took me a full 2 hours, both knees and elbows were red from kneeling and installing the stuff and still wasn't fully done. I will admit, I am not much of a handy person, and hopefully you guys will have a much easier time installing yours. If you do, please tell me how exactly can I install the damn gas pedal properly?

Was it worth it? I guess so. The brake pedal feels better (could be imaginary) can't really tell the difference on the gas pedal but the dead pedal, you can feel the grip. It looks better than stock for sure though. Anyhow, bed time.

I swapped them on my B6 MT, and I will agree it is no fun - more brute force and repeated tries than finesse.

the trick is lubrication... work smarter not harder.

I'm not joking when I recommend the use of KY/Astroglide to get those bitches on... slides on easy, lube dries out quick and cleans up easy.

I installed RS4 pedals on my B6 and I let the pedals sit in soap and warm water for about 5 minutes and it was an easy install....

WD40 is not a lubricant. You'd be much better off with the KY or Astroglide. Plus you might have some left over and then you'll have to come up with a way to not waste it.

So OP.. I'm working on this now.

The trick with the dead pedal is to pull the plastic side panel out over the carpet first. Then you slide the dead pedal groove onto the plastic panel starting low and sliding up. Then you push the pedal to the floor until it clips. The top clip just needs a bit of encouragement with a screwdriver.

The gas pedal is the real bitch here....gonna go look for the ky...

fsck my elbow hurts. got 'em all on:

Soaking didn't help. Lube just made it slip off my fingers.

What I did is made a small razor cut in the flap - at the corner. Then I used some duct tape to temporarily pull back the rubber so right and bottom pieces wouldn't get in the way. Then my hands were free to get the other 3 corners on.. finally pulled at the tape and pushed the final 4th corner on while ripping the tape off.

Its rock solid now. Pressing from all directions - it won't budge.

This is exactly what I did when installing my dead pedal. I just pulled back the kick panel a little bit over the carpet and slid the dead pedal over it. Although the OP's looks fine. This way is a much cleaner looking IMO.

I might give it a try to re-install the gas pedal and dead pedal in the summer. Too cold right now. :p

For those who are skeptical of the WD40 suggestion I would say, "Don't knock it till you try it"... One of the main components of WD40 is fish oil... So, it is, in fact, quite slippery. I use it all the time when installing/removing rubber exhaust hangars, and I'm sure it would work for this application as well. Though the KY is probably a better suggestion...

So after reading the forum archives I took to installing the pedals today. After 25 minutes of, "I'm handy...I don't need no stinking cuts or lubes or duct tape," I finally broke down and followed the advice you wrote knowing all along that it was probably the right thing. 90 seconds later the bitch was on. Thanks, madmadS4....time to go ice my elbow.

I've been a rock climber for 2.5 years so I consider myself having very strong hands and I must say, this install was a real bitch. Now I did not use any cuts or lubrication, nor did I soak the pedals because I simply did not feel like making a mess. I did however use Alcohol to help make the rubber less rigid. In hind sight, probably would have worked better. It took me a full 1.5 hours. Here are some tips that helped me:

Brake Pedal. Slip the bottom of the brake pedal into the bottom groove of the pedal cover while holding the flap on the left side of the brake cover. Press the rubber posts into the brake pedal to lock into place. Run your finger around the bottom of the brake pedal to make sure the left and bottom flaps are underneath the brake pedal.

Throtle Pedal: Difficult!! Slip the top part of the cover over the top part of the pedal while fitting the right side of the pedal underneath the 2 flaps on the right side of cover. Then grab the flap on the left side of the cover and work it underneath left side of pedal. At this point the top, left and right side should be almost entirely underneath the pedal with the bottom still left to do. Pry the bottom of the cover up while making sure with the other hand, that the other sections you already completed do not come undone. It's okay if you have to back track a little bit. Once you pry the bottom so it's underneath the pedal, fix the left and right side flaps.

Dead Pedal: The clip made no sense to me when I first looked at it. The top leg of the clip is clipped to the top part of a bottom cover underneath the foot well. The clipped part though is blind. To release the clip, use a screw driver to push the clip back far enough that the top leg of the clip falls down and is no longer on top of the plastic cover. Push on the only part of the clip that is exposed. When the clip is free, slip a flat screw driver underneath the dead pedal and pry up from several points. I managed to break 2 plastic posts out of 5. Last step to remove, pull out the kick panel far enough so it allows the dead pedal to slide down towards the floor. To install the new dead pedal, slip the kick panel into the groove and slide the dead pedal up. Use a flash light to make sure the posts are lined up. Once lined up, firmly press/snap the pedal into place. For the clip, take the screwdriver to push the clip far enough so that it catches the plastic, and pull down slightly to fully engage the clip.

    Hope that helps!

Having read all this I was prepared for the worst so it ended up being easier than I first thought.

The magic tool for the gas pedal was this one below. Once you make the upper part fit (strong fingers help) you use the tool to go all around stretching the lips and getting them to snap around the gas pedal

I seem to be having an off experience with this right now...

    Brake pedal: 2 mins
    Gas pedal: 4 mins
    Dead pedal: ...

The clip at the top is almost impossible to undo and I've tried to yank on it pretty damn hard to get the pedal off but it won't budge...

You need to push the clip in towards the firewall pretty far for it to clear. The plastic is very flexible so don't worry about breaking anything.

It needed quite the yanking on to come off but I eventually got it out. After some wedging action, it was out.

Putting the RS5 dead pedal in was a breeze. Whomever gave the tip to slide the side panel in first at the bottom and then push it up sliding it along upwards is a damn genius.

Also I'm sure the gas pedal would have been a bitch had it not been for the small incision on the top corner flap to allow it to snap into place. Whomever thought of that, thank you.

I should note that nobody has previously mentioned that the gas pedal is a cover that fits on top of the existing stock pedal, no cover to remove unlike the brake pedal. Took me a bit to understand that as I was hunting for something to remove there a well.

All done and boy, do they sharpen up the interior quite a bit in comparison to the dull rubber stock pedals which had no place in an S4.

I just finished the 3 pedal install on my 2010 S5 Prestige. 20 minutes of reading this thread + 25 minutes of actual work = a GREAT looking DIY upgrade!

Here is what helped me: a small mirror to make sure that all tabs were in place as they should be. Brake pedal was laughably easy, gas pedal was more of a challenge - the dreaded upper tab was off - saw it in the mirror after checking the job - manipulated in place with strong finger pressure. The LF kick panel - DEFINITLY pull it inward (VERY flexible) engage it in dead pedal slot and slide up. All rubber was pliable as it was in the 80's today!

Next up - RS5 shifter when I have the time/nerve to grab a heat gun and twist the teflon (?) shaft 90 degrees.

Yep, genius! Thanks for the tip. With everyone's advice, I was able to install the pedals today. It was definitely easier with all the tips from everyone. For lubricant, I used hand sanitizer because it's just as slimy as the other stuff but dries quicker. I use the same stuff to replace my Oakley rubber stops on the arms. It definitely helps with the replacements. Thanks again everyone especially ahcow for starting the thread and being that "early adopter"!

    RS5 Pedals installed (sort of)

Thanks for the helpful thread! The warm, soapy water and the mirror are what made it happen for me. Thanks to this thread I got them installed under 30 mins. Otherwise I'd still be out there!

Wish I could have gotten the old dead pedal without it breaking though. Not only did 2 clips break, but it snapped in the middle. Oh well, I don't plan to switch back. Thanks again!

30 minutes, left the pedals in the car on a warm day... the dead pedal was probably my most annoying piece... the brake pedal i just grabbed and spread it like i was trying to turn the side pieces into wings.

The gas pedal sucked but i used my small boney fingers to pull on the plastic edges and roll it out essentially.

Man I can't seem to get the brake pedal to stay on! It seems to be engaged when I install it but falls off after driving for a bit. The rs pedal doesn't have the same "plugs" on the back to ensure its attached as the original s5 brake pedal did.

Wonder if the new B8 RS4 pedals will work in the S4 in a similar way.

You got the wrong one. I am sure mine had the 2 plugs. It was pain in the ass to get it out but it was the easiest piece to get in. Where did you buy it from?
