I am in the process of removing my Ignition Control Modules (ICM) and replacing my 4 wire coil packs with the cheaper updated 5 wire coil packs on my 2.7.
I have been able to follow this DIY up to the point of bypassing the actual ICMs

This is a wiring diagram showing the path from the ECU to the ICM to the stock Coil Pack on one bank of a 2.7:

I had it wired as follows and it did not fire:

Can anyone tell me what wire from the ECU fires which coil?

Here is a diagram of the other bank of of coil packs:

One less part to fail, but replacing the coilpacks with a part that fails 10000x more then stock. I've thought about this route. Not worth the price of changing ICMs every 10 years, opposed to how troublesome those new coilpacks will be. Just ask the 1.8T guys how much they suck.

    Why don't you guy's use 034 ones? http://www.034motorsport.com/ignitio...ade-p-449.html
As what i can see, it also eliminates the powerstages.

    034 route is quite expensive..

I've used these coils in 1.8T applications before and they haven't been troublesome. I thought this would be an inexpensive way to update my ignition system.

Just looking for a quick answer to my question so I can get my car back driving

This should be helpful. Doing the same thing, but for a URS4/S6. We have a 4-pin connector iirc on our coilpacks, they have a 3-pin.

Also, with that wiring diagram above (re: infinkc), DO NOT SHARE GROUND WIRE between the coils, make a seperate ground wire for each one.

I'm not actually having trouble with wiring the new connectors for the coil packs. I have separate ground for each coil, etc.

Where I'm having trouble is bypassing the two ICMs. Instead of the one ICM the 1.8Ts run where it has 5 wires in (1 ground and 4 signal wires from the ECU) and 4 wires out (4 signal wires that go to the coil packs) we have the two ICMs. I'm trying to figure out what wire from the ECU fires what coil.

Each ICM does it's own bank. I do not remember which ICM does which bank, but you can look that up in the Bentley manual or the link that Kevin posted.

they should all feed through to the respected wire across them, here is a pic inside. use the wire colors and trace them to the corresponding coilpack.

post back the results so we have them for reference.

Thanks, this is what I wanted to know. You can see why I asked though since you cross the wires over with the 1.8T ICM,

oh just noticed something, on the schematic it looks like the wires do have to cross according to the pin numbers, Stupid confusing schematics..

i was going to tackle this one after i finished everything else. replacing the icms with individual coils that have their own power stages is an improvement im sparking power over our setup. it should result in slightly more timing and you can run a colder plug/more gap. nothing huge compared to the cost but it should improve the feel of the car nicely. mabye some more mpgs.

Pretty sure they are the latest revision "E" coil packs. They are made by Hitachi.

A full writeup would be awesome. I'd love to see some back to back testing before I took the plunge though. I wonder what sort of plug gap these can support vs the stockers.

Did you put on BEL 2.7T valvecovers to support the "pushdown" coils, or just put them in the stock covers?

Can someone 'redraw' the schematic since the photo links are gone? What does "wires have to cross according to pin numbers" mean? Which pins go to which cylinder?

    They should be
    Cyl 1-3
    94
    110
    102
    Cyl 4-6
    95
    11
    103

But not sure which pin to what cylinder?

Also: brown ICM connectors for bank 2 (cyl 4-6, driver side, left side), black ICM connectors for bank 1 (cyl 1-3, passenger/right side)?

    The diagram shows:

The 4 pins of the new FSI coil connector:

Can some PULEASE confirm that (using Bank 1 as example) the the signal lines are correct as shown in the 'crossed over' schematic:
94 pin goes to cyl 3
102 pin goes to cyl 1
110 pin goes to cyl 2

I have wired bank 1 (bank 2 left alone for now) per schematic (+12V from harness (red/green) on pin 1, ground pin 2/4 (and to valve cover), pin 3 signal according to above.
But it does NOT start! Double and triple checked.
Plugs are sparking, not no start (just a random 'puff' once in a while).
