    DIY piano black interior trim

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I did search for this but haven't been able to find it so if I happened to miss it you have my humblest apologies. Feel free to do the whole "search noob" thing. My question is for anyone who has painted their trim themselves. I have the fishscale and I absolutely hate it so I am looking to paint it piano black or a similar color. Has anyone had success with a rattle can? if so what color/brand did you use? Also, would I just be better off finding a professional to spray it for me?

I don't mind the brushed aluminum but to me the black just catches my eye instantly.

ehhh something about wrapping it scares me a little. I would probably do a shitty job but in terms of painting I have a few friends who are good and know one guy from my town who does alot of custom airbrushing who might be able to help.

maybe ill have to look into it then. Not sold on the carbon fiber either for my tan interior. And it's really not a very flashy car. Bone stock.

I would not recommend using your fishscale trim (as it is textured), I would trade it for a wood set and have that painted by a pro.

I've had to "redo" a bunch of sets of trim from people that thought they could do a piano set on their own, and the results are not always pretty. If you have no experience painting things and want it to look good, leave it up to the professionals.

I would definitely not paint it myself but I thought I could prep it and then have someone else spray it. Is there no way to remove that texture? Hours of sanding/acetone won't do it?

Sure, it will. But its a lot easier to just trade with someone that has a smooth wood set of trim and spend 20 min prepping it.

Good point. I didn't think anyone would really want my fishscale. I personally like it the least out of the trims but it seems that AZ has a different opinion. If anyone is interested in trading for mine pm me.

Just keep the trim installed and tape off the car. USE PAINTERS TAPE. Then a quick sand to make it stick and spray. Done.

Brought to you by the letter D. Because without it wouldn't mean dick.

Piano black finishes off better with wood trim. Fishscales is usually finished with brushed alum. Lookin the classifieds and I'm sure you will find piano black eventually.

Thats just asking for disaster imo. There are like 8 bolts that hold all the trim pieces in the car, takes about 20 mins to get everything out of the car..

I think that the tan interior look's the best with wood trim.

I like it alot. I didn't realize the issues fishscale created though because I figured redoing it to black would be a much cheaper way to get better trim. My brother's A4 has it and he's studying abroad in Italy. Maybe I'll just steal it :)

Did your trim come with your car? If so you have "soul black" and not piano black. It is similar, just has a rubberized shifter and ashtrays instead of the gloss.

Good question Matt. I would also like to know the details of the black trim. OEM piano? DIY? Soul? But either way you have pm.

I painted mine piano black a week ago and love it. I have tan interior and looks good IMO. I will get pics taken tonight. I used Dupli Color from the local auto store (gloss black) along with Dupli Color Clear Coat. Of course I started off with the Dupli Color sandable primer. I sanded them down pretty good with 320 grit and used paint thinner to get rid of any material on the trim that would make it hard for the paint to stick. I did all door pieces, front dash, shift plate, and the ash tray and let all of them dry for 24 hours. I didn't follow any DIY but used previous knowledge from other projects and was actually surprised how well it turned out.

Delayed but as promised - did this as a DIY and spent a few days a week ago doing it. Overall happy with the outcome (considering it cost $10 tops instead of $200 - 250 for the real thing) and much better than the puke gray. And of course a couple of her since she got a shower...

Never seen that before (piano on platinum). The contrast is pretty striking, I really like it.
