    Aux Input Mod

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!

    Having bought my pre-owned 2008 with a next-to-useless iPod interface, I wanted a normal aux in to use my mp3 player with.

    I didn't take any pictures while I made it but the finished article is attached.

    A summary of parts is as follows:
    3.5mm stereo panel-mount socket ($3 from RadioShack)
    3 conductor cable (I used a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable with the ends chopped off (A few bucks from RadioShack)
    Blank button. No need to buy if you have no far of ruining it or don't ever want to remove it. (ecstuning for $22 delivered)
    12-pin mini-ISO connector ($12 on ebay, also has an audi part number)

    Tools required:
    Soldering Iron
    Drill
    KKL cable for VAG-COM
    4x Stereo-Removal tools

    As I don't use the installed iPod connection, I just disconnected the ble connector from the back of my Symphony II+. It is hanging around behind the stereo.

    I made a short length of cable between the 3.5mm socket and my new 12-pin mini-ISO connector.

    Iso connector
    Pin 1: Left
    Pin 3: GND
    Pin 4: Right

    3.5mm Socket
    Tip : Left
    Ring: Right
    Sleeve: GND

    I then drilled a hole in the blank button and mounted the 3.5mm socket. It is held firm by a washer on the outside.

    I removed my old button blank and threaded the iso connector through to the back of the stereo and connected it where the Blue connector was (Socket B).

    Recoded the stereo for Aux input and hey presto it works :)

    I'll check the blue connector for the Audi number next time I am in my car and I remember to ;)

    I don't have a SAT unit although I have the wiring. This shouldn't affect it at all. You could even keep the iPod/external CD changer if you modify the existing blue connector B to have Aux as well and code the stereo accordingly..

    I've never taken the radio out, so I have no idea how it is wired. Are you suggesting that I can tap into the existing wiring, and recode the radio for the AUX input?

    This is great.

    I wish there were pictures. If anyone decides to try this, be sure to take photos along the way to help those of us who suck at electrical work.

    Thanks again for this great idea and resource!

    Yeah never got round to taking more pics and noting the part numbers etc. I'm away on business at the moment but will try to get round to it when I'm back.

    I wasn't intending to make a step-by-step guide when I did it so didn't take any pictures of the process.

    Re: Aux Input Mod

    Press CD multiple times to go from internal CD changer to External CD changer (OEM iPod interface) and Aux input.

    This is true so long as your radio is coded for these inputs.

    You only lose the Satellite radio if you go with some aftermarket iPod interface I believe. i'm no expert though!

    Will this work on the previous symphony with the 5 in-dash changer? symphony I? I imagine it would because the SAT connection would be the same?

    I "think" this is the right coding:

    from:http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/...NS-E%29#Coding
    [37] - Navigation

    # 0xxxx?x: Equipment I

    * 1 = Tuner not installed
    * 2 = Digital-Radio installed
    * 3 = Satellite-Radio installed
    * 4 = Satellite and Digital-Radio installed
    * 5 = Analog Input (AUX) installed
    * 7 = Satellite-Radio & Analog Input (AUX) installed
    seems to depend entirely on what radio you have, looks like Generation II+ and RNS-E are the only two that have the codes for it.

    Old thread bump...

    I'm considering doing this as a cheap alternative until I get around to doing a full iphone integration. Has anybody else done this recently?

    I assume I need access to a full version Vag Com to recode the radio?

    I definitely don't want to lose satellite, and it seems like I won't but can anybody confirm this?

    Even though it looks clean and +rep on the design, I wouldn't like the fact that a wire will be hanging straight out from there. I'd rather pull the wire through from the cup holder area and out. Just my 2.5 cents

    Agreed. Thats what I did. I have my iphone sitting in the cup holders with the wire attached. This is what I have, comes with an OEM aux button/cap

    I'm not sure why Daveman VAG'ed anything, I was able to plug it in, GROUND the AUX pin and press the CD button twice to access the AUX.

    I'm going to attempt this mod over the weekend. I just got my Symphony II+ installed (thanks euro-parts.us!), so that should be informative as to whether the VAGCOM is necessary - clearly I didn't have an OEM iPod connector.

    Audi Part Number 000-979-009

    wire Repair Set

    This is $2 + $9 shipping.... total $18 for 5. ~$4 a set. We need only 3 ISO Connectors, this probably comes with like 12 connectors each...so what we have is almost 20 sets.

    Once it shows up, i'll sell em here....save u that $9 and I can split the shipping with some of u and ship to u for like a $2 or something.....cost of a stamp and envelope.

    Does anyone have pictures of how you wired the 12 pin connector up. I am unsure of how to go about this. If I understand correctly I need to get a separate 12 pin connector (male or female?) and this will plug into the back of the radio. I cannot simply tap into the wires currently on the back of the radio?

    Has anyone got a good source for a 12 pin connector yet? I have been searching but the PN# above is just for the repair cables.

    Diy coming soon.

    I dont think you can tap directly, as there are no wires from those pins to tap into. I ordered the repair wires, its actually a wire with iso connectors. I think you can buy 3, and simple plug them into the existing 12 pin connector and solder the other end to an aux plug or a stereo cable.

    I got one from ebay UK. You wont be able to find it ebay usa.

    I picked up the repair wires today from audi when I dropped my car off for service and ordered what I think was the correct 12 pin connector. I've got everything wired up, im just waiting for my radio removal tools to arrive and the 12 pin connector.

    The part I am confused on at this point is whether or not I can just insert the pins from the aux cable I just made into the current 12 pin connector. From my understanding I just make a new 12 pin connector with the 3 wires and then plug that into the spot for it on the back.

    I am sure this will be much easier when my removal tools come in and I can really take a look at it.

    yeah, i havent removed my radio yet....i think once you remove it...things will be more clear. However, based on OPs comment....you need a new 12 pin connector set, cuz it comes with blank pins so u can connect your aux cable. (thats the one I bought from ebay uk).

    But I also bought the audi repair wires, which already have wires connected to pins. Which means, half the work is already done and all you need to do is insert these wires through the 12 pin connector which will go into the back of the radio. I think youve got it right.

    Either methods should work IMO.

    I also read, u can fabricate removal keys using hanging file folders on some site, but if youve already ordered them, u rather wait. Ive had my parts since 2 weeks, just been lazy to go under the car.
