Cool Tiptronic Recoding with vag-com - its so worth it.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
cross post this from AW in case you missed it:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

recode tiptronic transmission to disable DSP, and/or old tiptronic strategy. you will love the tiptronic modes:

3.0 - recode module (02) from 0001102 to 0000002,0000032, 0000012, 0000022 in that order of preference check it out.

    1.8T recode module (02) from 0001102 to 0000032, 0000012, 0000022 .

Old tip mode lets you hold 5500rpm all day long in 1st gear if you want :) requires a alot more throttle tip in to kick down. does not upshift unless redline.

3.0 owner quote about steering wheel tip-on-demand:
"Try the coding I used, which was 0000002

I'm wondering if having something in the 2nd to last digit is causing the issue.

BTW, I drove the car a bit more today and I noticed that the car does revert to D if you're in the gear it would be in normally in D mode.
It has to be in this gear for 8 seconds. One time I was in 4th gear and I knew it wanted to be in 4th, but I hit the accelerator and it stayed in 4th. Once I let off it went to D immediately.
It appears there is more "smarts" in the logic than what was originally thought. :)"

similar to this document: our cars require 7 digit coding of module (02) - Automatic Transmission:

That was me who posted the feedback on AW.

I've left my coding as 0000002 and absolutely love it.

put the tip into old shift strategy like 0000032 on 1.8T and pay attention to how the tiptronic worked and works.

like go 70mph and tip in the gas say 30% throttle , see what happens, recode the transmission, try it again :)

Re: Tiptronic Recoding with vag-com - its so worth it.

i was playing with tip mode tonight on a dark road and it was quite interesting when recoded, in tip mode i'd creep to light in 2, the car shifts down to 1, hold like80% throttle boost up, shift at 5200rpm, repeat, by 3rd gear, the car would creep to 3500 or so (was trying to watch the road) then lockup the torque converter drop back to 3000rpm (boosting pretty high), then i'd let it rev and repeat in 4th, seems like when the TC went from open to close you'd lose 4-500rpm. could be my old torque converter.

the only sucky part is forgetting you are in first and sitting there like a fool revving your car at 5500rpm until you remember you are in tip mode lol.

Here's the codes form the V6 motor cars(our codes are 7 digit, pad with zeroes):
Codes for '02 allroad 2.7T Tiptronic with Drive and Sport modes, and Tip steering wheel controls:

01002 = Stock coding; live steering wheel Tiptronic controls in Tip mode only; new Tip strategy, DSP active.

00002 = Live steering wheel Tiptronic controls in D, S or Tip mode; new Tip strategy, DSP active.

01012 = Live steering wheel Tiptronic controls in Tip mode only; new Tip strategy, DSP inactive.

00012 = Live steering wheel Tiptronic controls in D, S or Tip mode; new Tip strategy, DSP inactive.

01022 = Live steering wheel Tiptronic controls in Tip mode only; old Tip strategy, DSP active.

00022 = Live steering wheel Tiptronic controls in D, S or Tip mode; old Tip strategy, DSP active.

01032 = Live steering wheel Tiptronic controls in Tip mode only; old Tip strategy, DSP inactive.

00032 = Live steering wheel Tiptronic controls in D, S or Tip mode; old Tip strategy, DSP inactive.

-- New Tiptronic strategy is: "when the shifter is in the Tiptronic gate, the transmission will automatically shift up or down based on preset RPMs and throttle position values."

-- Old Tiptronic strategy is: "when the shifter is in the Tiptronic gate, the transmission will hold gears to RPM redline. When the car is braked to a stop, first gear will automatically be selected."

Re: Tiptronic Recoding with vag-com - its so worth it.

okay here's what i have found: coding 0000032 works best for me. ymmv.
The tiptronic controls only work in tip mode, period. on my car. try it on yours in DS.

In "D" the car will hold the torque converter in SLIP mode for a long time between shifts.
In "S" the car will lock up the TC quickly but doesnt appear to shift into 5th gear, i could be wrong but its hard to one-man on an empty road even with a laptop. so its good for city driving
In TIP mode --> The torque converter locks up fast, even in "2" it will lock up, very similar to "S" but you have control of each gear. This is where we get the best performance since slipping the torque converter generates heat and wastes power since the 1:1 lockup isn't complete.

D-> 5th gear, 60mph gas it, unlocks TC (RPMS GO UP), goes then locks back up(RPM DROP), feels like a downshift but it probably isnt if you lightly throttle it

TIP -> 5th gear,60mph, TC STAYS LOCKED, turbo boost builds, you move.

SPORT ->3000rpm@60mph - seems like this is 4th gear or something the rpm's are just way too high to be 5th gear.

I now would like to learn how to take off the shifter gate so i can modify it to go from SPORT to TIP :), drive around in the city in SPORT get fast clean lock-ups, then when you need freeway speeds (60+) you drop it in tip lock in 5th gear and rock out.

TIP mode with this coding will sit at 5500rpm all day long. One thing i want to try out is tap the RPM sensor using a shift light controller, and relay the + UPSHIFT with a 5400rpm pill or 5200rpm pill so when the k03 reaches its peak, in tiptronic mode it would auto shift when this device was on. This would make it shift better for hauling ass imo without having to muck around with the shift buttons.

anyone know how to remove the tiptronic shifter mechanism :)

stock tiptronic strategy will not let you shift at any rpm you want, and sometimes it is best to keep your eyes on the road eh? our cars don't make enough engine noise eh

Re: Tiptronic Recoding with vag-com - its so worth it.

well the new strategy that the car has will upshift and Downshift for you when it feels like it.

the old strategy coding will sit there with the torque converter locked up until you mat it, letting you lug the motor until the turbo spools up.

so if you are doing 60 in 5 with new strategy and tip in to spool the turbo and take off, it will likely downshift a gear or two. This sucks.

old strategy will just leave the torque converter locked up and you will not do much for a few seconds until the turbo spools up.

I guess the strategy used depends on how you like your tiptronic to work.

The V6 dudes get the nifty ability to override drive/sport with the steering wheel controls somehow.

Ive been doing this research too. My initial problem with the tiptronic was for its downshifts during high speeds. For example lets say 80mph, and if you mash the pedal until the lil button to the bottom, it still down shifts itself. After reading the post you guys have made, it seems that my car (2004 a4 usp 1.8t) came with the way of the old strategy. I bought the car brand new, and I am the first owner. So i don't seem to understand this new and old strategy. It seems that everything you guys can do with old strategy, i can currently do in my own tiptronic. Whats going on with that?

Re: Tiptronic Recoding with vag-com - its so worth it.

okay well if i'm at say 60mph and hit 50% throttle instead of spooling to 22psi, it will downshift and rev up the motor. Now i didn't get APR stage 1+ so that i could just wind out the motor, i want my huge torque from the chip.

Thats where i tell the difference old vs new. not at 100% throttle but at part throttle tip mode

I'm on stage 1+ an experience the gear hunting problems at around 70mph. In 5th gear if I just blip the throttle past 10psi the car will automatically downshift to 4th, then upshift back to 5th, and back down to 4th. Seems like the motor is generating too much torque for the TCU to handle. Would this solve the problem?

its a tuning issue, this will help some with TIPTRONIC mode and very little with "D" but mostly tiptronic mode. give it a shot, i've put over 3K miles on mine on this mode its absolutely better, but not perfect.

This is a very, very interesting thread and article linked at the top > thanx! I can't wait until tomorrow to try it out. To me, the way the tip is programmed is one of THE MOST ANNOYING thing about my car and the #1 thing I would change. If any of you have had the chance to drive a BMW auto, it is amazing. I hate my wifes car but the transmission is a dream. It shifts like a F1 or motorcycle tranny. So smooth, so quick and staggered shift points that are perfect. It never hunts at all. This is something Audi needs to work on, although the new DSG is pretty damn good too.....so I take it back :)

I think I'll be in a position to tell you guys if this will solve the gear-hunting issue with stage 1+. I know exactly what this problem is and under what circumstances it occurs. Also, I'm going to try the 0000032 code some time this week as soon as I can hook up with my VAG COM pal.

My lingering concern is that there may be a difference between the '02 TCU's and (my) '04 TCU.

For example: A4TL, what year is your car?

Regardless, I will do this and I will report. I know there's a bunch of guys here besides me who need to know!

Re: Tiptronic Recoding with vag-com - its so worth it.

dynamic shift program. by default it creeps from grandpa to speed racer mode. it remembers the setting. the more aggressive it gets the faster the car downshifts (sucks for us turbo guys). so disabling forces the dsp to start at grandpa every time and the car will usually wait longer to downshift giving more time to spool the turbo (good thing).

so far only 3.0 owners of A4's have been able to use the tip-button override "d"rive mode. If anyone can get it to work for 1.8T post a vag-scan. The coding is there in the 0000032 to enable this mode. So far no 1.8T folks had it work and a single 3.0 dude posted it works. said it kicks out of drive into tiptronic for a period of time then re-engages drive based on some parameters.

the tip old strategy requires alot of throttle to kickdown instead of light-throttle kick down which gives us 1.8T chipped folks alot more fun to let the turbo spool rather than kick down which is lame in TIP mode.

Here is what I have found, don't know what is true or not. (My coments/questions)

    for code 000WXYZ
W = 1 - Tip steering wheel present (not in my case as I don't have the tip wheel but have code 0001002 on a 2003 1.8t Avant)
X = 1 - Old Tip strategy (don't know how different that is)
    Y = 1 or 3 - DSP inactive (why 1 or 3?)
Z = country code - 1 = not North America, 2 = North America (how are they different?)

So I guess one could try different codes and see what works best. 0000112 might be interesting to compare to 0000012 or 0000132 to 0000032. Trying Rest of World code 1 to North America 2 would be good to do too, like 0000011 to 0000012.

Again, I am not chipped yet and have tried none of this stuff so you are on your own as to risk.

Re: Tiptronic Recoding with vag-com - its so worth it.

I made my first change to 0001112, wouldn't recommend it. Shifts all the time even in TIP mode. I just got REVO stage1 and it was undriveable IMO. When I got it home from the tuner I coded 0001032 and from the limited driving so far it is pretty usable now, especially in tip and sport. I will get used to it for a while and then try something ending in 1 to see if the "rest of world" shift pattern is better. Anyone tried it yet?

NOTE: I could not code 0000032, wouldn't take it and I do not have steering wheel paddles.

Can someone with a VagCom check what their stock programming is set at?

stock code on my 2003 A4 1.8t Avant was 0001002, at least that is the way I bought it with 39,000 miles on it.

I just tried recoding mine and it wouldn't accept any changes. Might be my crappy ebay cable which sucks balls.

You need to go back out of that module and then back into it to see the changes. What is your original code?

Re: Tiptronic Recoding with vag-com - its so worth it.

works fine been using it since i originally posted it. try the $8 cheap vag-com serial cable and vagcom 3.x to recode module (02) . will never go back to stock programming.

make sure you have all campaign recalls done :)

    p.s this is bit math

so the values 0 1 and 2 you can have 3 with 1+2.

the dsp disable reduces the amount of downshifts when throttling in tip mode
the old strategy seems to help as well.

none of this is perfect; the ecu needs to be programmed to correclty fix shift problems but thats another story; nobody will do this.

I have tried all combinations with APR stage 1+; if other tuners disable this function or hardcode their own strategy in thats on them.

i think those old "tip chips" were just that; they'd recode it for you and charge you money lol.

ask around there is a dude here that enabled steering wheel to tiptronic mode in a 3.0 (i tried with 1.8T - no way). probably related to the fact higher line audi's have this feature out of the box. and those models don't come with a 1.8T but may come with a 3.0 :)

i wonder what happens if you throw a 3.0 TCU onto a 1.8T ecu :) boom? dunno.

Will doing this increase the risk of messing up the tranny or put more stress on it? I really want to try it but I'm a little scared since my car's got 96K on the clock.

i started mine about 96K. i assume at 96K you've done about 2-3 trans fluid and gasket changes? or do you ignore the maintenance?

In my opinion it should be less work for the transmission, fewer shifts so it should be easier on it.

Re: Tiptronic Recoding with vag-com - its so worth it.

the faster the shift (unless double gear engagement) the better for the trans. smoothness goes away; life increases.

The more volume of flow of trans fluid; the longer the life of the tranny.

aka chevy dudes call this a shift kit.

Trans coolers are used in lieu of the built in radiator on tiptronic cars of higher lineage audi (ala A8). Keeping trans fluid cool saves lives. Why not on a 1.8T modded?

Most new (bmw?) cars shift with the torque converter locked up between 2-7 (7 speed? mercedes?) why? faster.

Our tiptronic modulates the torque converter lock up with PWM to smooth shifter; at the xpense of slip.

One would say you slip the clutch on a manual? I doubt SMG or F1 shifters slip the clutch much; they engage fast and hard.

    So ideally we want:
Lock up converter as fast as possible
Keep temps of trans fluid as cool as reasonable.
Shortest shift times possible without engaging two gears at once.
    Improved fluid flow.

This won't do all of that but its a start.

You must remember slip = heat = wear. The more slip the more heat is exhausted.

I had this crazy idea once. Strap as many heatsinks from old pc's to everything. It would draw the temps away (i was thinking intake manifold!) and trans and everything else that had heat. It works for cpu's. they generate more heat per square inch than most other products. Heat pumps yadda. Of course you need to model air flow as well to ensure you are extracting the heat from the heat sinks but that wouldn't be that hard with a light source and digital camera :) or a mass air flow meter and some simple electronics :)
