Caliper brake bolts - need to replace?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi there,

I'm getting ready to replace my rear pads and rotors. The manual says that I need to replace brake caliper bolts.
It's that truly necessary or can I just use locktite on old bolts?

If they're tty bolts you should replace them. They seem to be everywhere on VAG products.

I had 2 standard rear caliper bolts and 2 that had some sort of spacer or weight on them. I reused the ones that had some sort of spacer weight on them because I couldn’t find replacements at the time with blue locktite. So far so good been a couple years. The dealer thought it was fine if they were in good shape as I recall.

    They are not TTY.
IMO it is just that they come with loctite pre-applied and Audi must assume people will not re-apply as necessary.
I've re-used them several times after wire brushing the old stuff off and applying new loctite.

You do not have to take the caliper bracket off on the A6 to do rear discs.

I reused all the fasteners when I did both the front and rear pads + discs on my 2012 A6.

Just for clarity, the caliper carrier bolts are TTY 100Nm + 90º and should be replaced if removed.

Re-use my caliper mount bolts without new loctite and have never done the crazy 100 Nm + 90. Just buzz them down with an impact or sometimes just lock them down as tight as I can with an 18" breaker bar.

Just be careful to remove the correct bolts. There are threads on AZ by people who removed the wrong bolts and generated lots of posts!

    Thank you all.

So I did 1st side today.

This is what I realized and sharing it for benefit of others or my own in the future in case I forget ;-)

There are caliper carrier bolts that hold caliper mounting bracket if you will. Those are TTY and DO NOT need to be removed to replace pads or rotors, unless, you need more banging space to bp the rotor out.

There are also caliper mounting bolts that use locktite and thread into caliper slider pin on which caliper rides. Those need to be removed.

There is a torx screw that holds rotor to hub and it needs to be removed to take rotor out.

Z26 drilled and slotted rotors are cool looking.
