B8.5 SQ5 airbox mod (AFe Dry Pro + 2.5" hole @ bottom)... connect to fog grill?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was wondering if anyone has made a hole in the passenger fog plastic inner cover (the SQ5 fog grille is open for the most part) and piped to the lower 2.5" airbox mod hole?

I guess just having a hole in the inner cover would allow for cool outside air to enter the space below the airbox, which would then enter the 2.5" airbox mod hole.

Did a search but didn't see anything other than the airbox mod hole(s).

I just did the 2.5" hole today and installed the AFe Dry Pro filter. EPL Stage I tomorrow with Stage II once Chris gets the FluidAmpr crank pulley back in (already paid).

I don’t know about all that but this is working well for me on an EPL DP tune:

    Still looks fairly stock...

I cut down the plastic deflector that is right before the air filter on the front end of the airbox.

Yes, that’s the aFe I’m running now although the pic shows the K&N that I was running prior.

Yes. That’s the one I got. Perfect fit. Just remember to take the rubber gasket out with the old paper OEM filter. It’s not needed.

To answer your orignal post title question, I haven't seen anyone do that. But I'm sure it's possible. We used to do it in the VW MK5's, I know I did it in my R32. You would just need to get 2 2.5" flanges, dryer hose would work well (it's easily bendable and won't be seen anyways). Cut a holse in the back piece of the fog grill insert, then put a flange inside the airbox and one inside the fog grill hole, run and connect the hose to each flange.

Has anyone verified whether we're seeing any pressurize/ram air with the stock setup? I've swiss cheesed a lot of VW airboxes in the past but this one is the first design where it appears we may have a bit of ram air.

If you ventilate the box, you lose the benefit at the trade of a bit more airflow "up top".

I wonder what the extra blocked hole is for, btw. If anything in the range needs the air it's the SQ5. Does anyone know if the TDi or other model actually has the extra port open?

Here you go, BQ SQ5 has done a nice job, from a different post. His car is fast, maybe this is helping.

Hadn't seen this one before, but this is EXACTLY what I was talking about above. Hell, I may actually look into doing this to add air flow for my CTS intake.

I'm not sure what type of hose he used, but you can use dryer vent hose (get from Home Depot, etc.).

What channel are you all acquiring via VCDS to to measure airflow?

My modified airbox just has the round cutout area at the bottom removed. Since cool outside air can get into that area, I'm not sure that running a hose would lower temps and therefore IAT's at all. Cold air has more oxygen molecules - air mass is greater. That is a good thing. Also, since hot air rises, it makes sense to have the opening close to the bottom, where cooler air is more likely to be present. I just doubt there is much temperature delta between ambient air at the front fog light grill area and ambient air just behind it. I'm always open to the data, though. I'll run that hose in a heartbeat, if the data supports colder air.

As to ram air - forget that. That is cosmetic except at very high speeds. You see huge bulb-like specially shaped ram air intake systems on the hoods of normally aspirated pro stock drag cars. Even then, they get no gains until the mph is extremely high, higher than even our most highly modified cars are likely to trap in the quarter mile. And, using it on a forced induction engine makes no sense unless you increase the diameter of the remainder of the system, as the size of the throttle body and the boost generated by the supercharger (or turbo) will determine the air mass the engine is receiving. Increasing upstream flow above what the throttle body can pass through to the supercharger would simply be wasted. You can suck or blow through a straw of known internal diameter only so much. Once that limit is reached, flow will not increase. If I recall correctly, a drag car has to be going 200 mph to achieve a 5% increase in air flow from ram air effect.

The lower you go, the colder the air...that isn’t always true. Don’t forget the the track/road temp is hotter than the air temp so if you go too low you will actually be drawing in hotter air.

Great thread. Now a dumb question. Is there an easy DIY for getting the airbox out? i tried and gave up after I got the filter out. Any tips?

Basically if you have the Throttle Body Inlet hose disconnected, you disconnect the airbox from the front "ram air" grill intact, remove a hose under the lateral side and pull up. Video shows it perfectly.

i believe banks power has the most research out there regarding ram air intakes and they do have the best design in my opinion i am going to try this set up but just use the ram scoop and attach it to the stock air box with a big cut out in the bottom

Let us know if it fits. It’s pretty tight behind that fog light grill.

Here is my setup, I used an old brake cooling duct that I had from my B5 days, I left as much of the plastic that I could to not put water where it wasn’t meant to go and aluminum tape painted black to direct flow to the opening.

Yea with grill off its not the prettiest setup but is functional and fits snug without modifying anything other then the airbox and plastic behind the grill. With grill on you'd never know it was there. This is the brake duct piping that I had laying around that I used. https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pr...EaAl90EALw_wcB

I love the concept, EH. Beauty is as beauty does. Form follows function. Brake cooling duct piping seems the perfect choice. I’m not sure the aluminum tape really does anything, though. As long as there is a direct path from the grill to the duct, air will freely enter. Vacuum under boost will pull it right in.

I’m going to explore a similar setup when my warranty expires in about 7,000 miles. Thanks for sharing this.

For aesthetics reasons I might rattle can the orange duct pipe a flat black. Then it would be completely invisible.

From the same company you sourced the brake duct piping is this end cap:

    https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pr...p?Product=3623

I wonder if it would fit flush to the back of the grill.

Be careful about going too low. It could become a source of hydrolock if you drive through high water. Banks knows their stuff, but specializes in big diesel trucks that are much higher off the pavement.

water wont get sucked up because its a 2 way passage designed for rocks and water gale banks design is great

Sorry, but that is not going to matter when it goes completely under water, front and back. A drain does no good when the drain is submerged too. Just be careful.

I wonder if it would fit flush to the back of the grill.
Thanks, yea the aluminum tape is more to seal the gap between the duct and the plastic that otherwise would be solid there to protect the stuff behind from rain/snow/debris. It’s a tight to get a duct in there. The square one that was posted above would never work. Here is the one I used, it’s carbon fiber.

I don’t think so, it’s really tight and without being able to angle it up and back you would be running right into the pump/fan mounted right behind the plastic. The piece I used also has a slight bend in it that help line it up with the clear spot where it is literally wedged in.

    Hey, guys.

Just thought I should share my airbox modifications as well. Back when I lived in PA I got an open air ECS intake and I loved the whine. But once I moved to CA and registered my car here, the intake had to come off. So I reinstalled the airbox and got a K&N filter and a 034 intake hose. I also removed the padding inside the airbox as well as the cover that directs the air inside the airbox downwards. Now, I know that by removing this cover, as opposed to cutting it, I created a very small gap where some air from the engine bay can enter the intake. I am okay with that though. The whine was pretty subdued compared to the open air intake. I wanted mooaaarr whine, so...

Today, I decided to go all the way and do the modification this thread is about. It took my spouse and I 3 hours to do. But it was relatively simple and cheap. One thing though... I did have to rotate the horn because the new intake hose kept hitting the connector and it wouldn't go in all the way. I honked the horn a few times afterwards and it sounds the same as before. This can be avoided if you measure better than me. LOL!

Attached are some pics of the mod as well as the products we used. We got the hose, couplers, mounting plate, and clips from our local Autozone. The clamp I had already, but purchased it at Home Depot. We got the dremel from Lowe's. So parts are easy to find and readily available.

The SQ definitely whines more now. Not to the level of an open air intake, but it's a good amount. I can hear it over my AWE exhaust and non res dp's. Thanks everyone for posting their pics and sharing their knowledge.

    Hope this helps.
