    Hey guys,

I just noticed an oil leak in my car at work. I saw a thread that shows common oil leaks but didnt quite show pictures on where the leaks initially start.

    *Front of the engine

    *See video & Pictures

    Any help is great!

    Thanks.

Could be a bad seal on the oil pan. Do you drive without a belly pan? Is your snub mount covered in oil? Can you get better pictures?

I plan on getting under it after work! I just recently got the car this way, this leak started once i took it to a shop to get an oil change. It almost looks like the filter may be leaking.

But i will update once I get under her!

Thank you for the response, it is greatly appreciated !

I would say i got it changed 2k miles ish ago! It is a shop that works exclusively on euro cars so i figured it would be fine but I did have it with no leaks or issues because I had it checked out by 2 shops and a third party friend. They all came back with nothing but good things to say about the condition. This is why i feel that it could have been that. It is not leaking tons of oil and turns on fine! I just took a picture of the puddles and have been checking if they have been getting bigger.

*forgive my run on sentences lol

The filter is on top of the motor not under it. There are several different places where an oil leak can be. Valve Cover Gaskets, oil cooler seals, Front main seal (Behind the pulley), Oil Filter Housing Gaskets, Valley Pan Cover Gasket (under Intake Manifold), Oil Pan Sealant......Could be any or all of the above. For me it was all of the above. There may be some that I am forgetting as well.....

Yah, totally different type of V8. The oil is most likely not coming from the oil filter since that is up top. But as others mentioned it could most likely from oil pan gasket/sealant or other areas towards the bottom of the motor.

Usually the leaks come from the valley pan gasket and/or oil filter housing gasket. Neither have any merit on changing the oil and developing a leak.

i cleaned it up and the drip started from those two points. All gauges and oil pressure read normal and no overheating has occurred.

Still hard to tell but my best guess is oil cooler o rings. Valley pan a possibility too. Probably not oil pan sealant bc it seems to be developing above it

Have you gone under the car while it’s running? Wipe down the oil, turn on the car and get underneath it

yes! I took pictures from under it there. The oil did not come out once i cleaned it and once i let it run a second thats where it started dripping. My friend said it could be the oil pan gasket but he is not sure either. SOS

Here are pre clean of the bolts pictures

you can see the bolts have residue on them

    unnamed-3.jpgunnamed-2.jpg

I did not see the bolts have oil on them again once i turned it on, i may just not have waited long enough.

Also the car was at a slant with the engine raised so that may have had an effect on it.

You can get a UV dye at the parts store and a UV light. It helps tremendously tracking down a leak

If it's on the passenger side along that coolant pipe it will most likely be the oil cooler. There's still the possibility of the oil pan leaking as well and the off chance the valley pan gasket. Usually, that's more central but you can never tell where oil will run.

This........I'd put money on it because I had a drip in exactly the same place and it was the small oil cooler O rings. Have a look and see if there's any oil on the pulley tensioner. The oil cooler is behind it.

Your oil pan gasket on the front is shot.

No other way to explain oil drops on the bolt heads on the front AND sides at the same time. If the seal leaks you get oil droplets coming through the thread of these bolts. I had the same issue on my RS4.

I had a complete guide up in the rs4 section but dropbox botched the picture hotlinks... dammit.

    Here's a few more pics:

You can see the "oil stain" to the left of the oil pan.

You'll need some force too loosen the old gasket but be careful not to scratch the block too much.

Use a 2x4 to have a flat surface when preparing the seal-area and removing the old gasket material.

End result. Popped in a new oil-pan as my old one was rusted.

I had leaks on both. That looks more like the oil cooler... could also be valve covers leaking. Very common. Valley pan is a likely culprit too. Makes a mess on the front of the engine. Hopefully not the crank seal.

If you’re doing the oil cooler o-rings I highly recommend replacing the 2 little coolant lines going into the oil cooler. They’re cheap, replacing them is almost no extra labor once you have he oil cooler out, and if you’ve been leaking oil onto them then they may be failing.

(Also not a bad time to refresh the alternator, throw on an accessory belt, and replace the idler pulley + snub mount)

secondary oil pan possibly...start from the top of the engine (valve covers), then Oil filter housing, secondary oil pan, power steering line, oil pan... I find it odd that these engines don't use an actual gasket on the oil pan

Started with 160grit and ended with 400grit. Of course with a lot of feeling as the AluSil material is very soft.

    Removing the oil pan

I'm working on an 09 Q7 with the 4.2 V8 (set up the same) and needed to do the lower oil pan gasket.
I was wondering if you had to remove the front coolant pipe that crosses under the front of the oil pan or did you have enough room to remove the bolts and pivot the pan out?
