Anyways. I was looking for winter tires for my B5 Avant, and ended up stumbling across this yacht (below) that came with a set of summers and a set of winters..... how convenient, there's even an entire car included in the deal. One things lead to another and I ended up making it mine and getting it towed home. The steering rack was leaking and I didn't want to destroy the pump too by driving it 100mi.

Its a facelift MY2001 delivered in 2002 A8L 4.2 AUX 5spd Auto with the infamous ZF 5hp24a... @ 155,000km when I picked it up last Sept. The P/O said he hardly drove it because it spent most of its life broken with repair bills that were to high for him to pay at once. He provided me with a ton of paperwork.
Ended up having the OE rack rebuilt after rockauto refunded my money and told me they were out of stock. also did inner and outer tie rods, boots, air filter, spark plugs and an oil change
Put it all in and went for an alignment right away.

The high pressure line to the rack had rotted and started leaking during my alignment. I limped it home and pulled the line out and looked up replacement cost... $700+ CAD from the dealership. Instead I went to the tractor shop by my work and had them make me a high pressure line that worked just as well..

Time went on and stuff happened and things.... I took this cool picture ^
Tinted the windows and debadged it at some point during
Both my flex pipes broke the first time it snowed. Had my buddy weld a couple up for me.
That front engine tq mount was broken too so I swapped that out.
Also my hood cable wasnt attached in the car and i was sick of using vise grips so I replaced that...
Drove the car all winter and decided I really liked it so, maybe I should take care of it.

Yeah I'm a bit excessive. The P/O had told me the Timing belt was just done. But I checked the papers he gave me and it was done at a nappa or midas or something. I couldn't live with that.
did they do the water pump? what about tensioners? did they literally just change the belt? did they use the right tools? Too many ?'s for me to rest easy so I said fuck it lets do it all.

Valley Pan looks good eh

WHY IS MY OIL PAN FURRY

Oh thats why ( already started de-furring)

hectic

Service manual instructions for oil cooler removal are as follows.

Step 2- remove 4 bolts securing the oil cooler.

Success (also pictured: Alternator for rebuild and oil pan for rust repair. )
Tip. 12pt. 15mm sockets hammered on, remove the 8mm allen bolts once you strip them.

Before and after.

New Voltage Regulator for the alternator.

Old plastic water pump vs new metal water pump.

New OE T-Stat

New pads on Both sides of the tensioner and front and rear cam seals / caps / tensioner gasket and half moon.

Painted valve covers, intake manifold & Restored hardware

Little things matter too.

Starting to come back together. Also cleaned and lubricated the I/M Flaps while manifold was off and ran new silicone vacuum line.

Belted up

More pulleys and brackets and mounts covers and stuff

And all buttoned up, got some gold heat wrap for the intake and to replace some broken heat shields.
Probably not to everyone's taste but meh. I think its neat.

Has to be one of the few 4.2s in the world that dont leak oil. haha. Although I didn't pull the motor so I didn't do the rear main. It will probably leak from there... But its allowed to.
Till scrap this damn transmission. I have access to a S8 rear diff and I have a spare O1E in my garage.... So I'm 1/8th of the way there. Just need to have a custom driveshaft made, figure out clutch setup, Rebuild the O1E, and have some CV Spacers made + Master / Slave / Pedal Assy.
