HID question for those with Morimoto D1s bulbs.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I picked up a set from TRS and they got here today, a few (3) questions..

1st.. is it just me or does the base part of the bulb look a LOT smaller than the OEM D1s bulbs?

2nd.. Am I going to need an adapter to hook the D1s up to the stock harness, or is this a universal pinout for D1s?

3rd...what is the deal with the "gunk/sediment" inside the actual hollow part of the bulb (arc tube?) hard to tell in pics but it is only on 1/2 of the arc tube is this normal?...

    Thanks all

    1. Without a ruler or any frame of reference, I can't tell. Given that D1S is a bulb standard, I'd imagine that the dimensions are within 1-5% (or less) of other D1S bulbs.
    2. It is a bulb standard, so as long as you have D1S bulbs now, you'll be fine. It'd be the same as getting H7 bulbs from 8 manufacturers, they'll all plug in the same.
    3. It is the metal salts that are used to get the color temperature of the bulb. The composition of the salts is how they change the color temperature of the bulb, so they're supposed to be there. It may look a little different in your current bulb, but that'd be due to manufacturer, color temperature, and age.

    1. Yeah thought that as soon as I posted, lol
    2 Yep got D1s now
3.So awesome..I was actually looking into it. You may have noticed an edit where I added "Arc tube?" Further research had me reading about other minerals in the tube. you have confirmed this for me.

    Thanks for the assist.

I am running their bulbs. They fit just like OEM and work just like OEM. You plug them in the same. The "gunk" is the salts/crystals that create the light. Plug them in and enjoy light.

Got my 5500K all installed and aimed tonight.

What a difference, for the price I am a happy man.

As a side note, most cheepo ebay HIDs that are 5500K are more closer to 6000 - 6500K as they are super blue.

Morimoto 5500K is most def not blue, it is a nice white.

Post some night time pictures! I have always thought about buying these as a cheap alternative to the "real" OSRAM Xenarc bulb. While my bulbs aren't super dim (well, they might be just a liiiitle bit dim), I do notice that they have the slightest yellow tint to them. How are they compared to your OEM bulbs? This post might have just convinced me to pick up a set!

Ordered some 4500k this morning. Reviews are great on these.

Will I need to aim the new lights when I install them?

when I took my old working (stock 2004) bulbs out I noticed some build up on them. I used some alcohol swabs that were included with my new bulbs for pre cleaning on the old bulbs....took all the residue off.

Give your old bulbs a clean and see if you notice a difference.

I swapped out some cheap DDM Tuning bulbs for some "closeout" Morimoto "3Five" D2S 5500k bulbs. HOLY CRAP. WHAT.A.DIFFERENCE. It was like night and day (har, har). Easily 2-3x increase in light output. I can see where I am going now! I used to rely on fog lights a lot. Now I can barely tell if the fogs are on or not. Amazing.

The best part was I only paid $15 a pair! I bought 2, thinking that was so cheap, they had to be individual. Pleasant surprise when I got 4 bulbs. Thanks Retrofit Source.

If you have Amazon Prime then use that, they have 4500k, 5500k and 6500k Morimoto for $35 each. Ordered some the other day

Even better! What color temp did you end up buying? I'm leaning towards 5500k for a white white color.

I have older Morimoto bulbs in my b7 but they're pretty fantastic for the price. I have the 4300K D1S bulbs that they used to sell 2 years ago with the metal base. Aside from a weird dipped headlight error a week after I bought them I've had zero issues with them in over two years.

I would advise against 6500K. It will be rice blue and you will have bad visibility on wet roads/rain.

Will test out and return for 5500k, good thing about Amazon Prime lol. Though they don't have many pairs left

Also luckily I'm in drought stricken California lol. Though El Nino is supposed to be bad this Winter, I also don't do a lot of night driving

Was on a DARK road last night so I snapped some pics as requested.

I also made a video by jamming my cell phone up between the dash and windshield...yes it falls over a few times. Near the end of the video you can see me turn my fog lights (yellow) on ans off a few times for comparison.

That looks good! Is that with the stock OEM projectors? I have a TRS Morimoto 5.0 kit with 5000K bulbs in my other and love them. So, I was planning to get a similar kit for my B6, but wow if that is the difference with only bulbs, perhaps I'll start there and keep the stock projectors.

If that is just running on the stock headlights and ballasts, that is amazing. I'm probably going to pick up a set for sure. I do need to refinish my headlights first and was actually thinking of doing the Joey mod as well.

I just need to do more research on what guys use to UV protect their lenses.

    Stock ballasts and headlights.

I refinished the headlights this summer with 2000 grit then polishing compound.

I sealed my headlights with a $12 sealer at local auto parts store, I re apply every 2 washes or so.

I cannot decide between 4500K and 5500K. I absolutely do not want any blue hue. The 5500K looks like the right pure white I want, but do they move up the range as they age and become more blueish? So, should I get the 4500K instead then?

I do (did). But they didn't have these XB35 bulbs back then. Only the 3-five bulbs which were not nearly as good.
The new XB35s bulbs are VERY impressive. I just picked some up for my B7 projector swap (mini-H1 V7) as well as a set of new D1S XB35 bulbs. I was planning to put the D1S bulbs in another vehicle but I may pop them in my B6 just for comparison to the CBIs.

This thread by TRS really shows the performance of the XB35 bulbs...I just hope the long term reliability is on par with the initial performance.
