    S4gasm's K24 RS6 build - 91 craptane

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I play quite a bit of poker, and one might suggest I’m gambling here with the stock block…so be it ;)
However sometime next summer I plan on building another BEL block, but for now, doing this all on stock block, so we will see what's capable on 91 craptane and stock bottom block. I won't be able to put a bunch of photos up until a few days from now, however I am documenting it well with a couple cameras.
Over the last year I have gone through about everything on this car and it’s in about as good shape mechanically as one could ask for. Too much stuff to list, anyways on to the good parts.

Here are the important bits of the build.

    Turbos: SRM - K24 RS6
Fueling: 70lb EV14, Walbro 450 pump, 90mm MAF - built my own intake random silicone and elbows
    Tune: Daz
    Plugs: NKG BKR7E Iridium
    Intercoolers: SRM smic's
Clutch - stage 4 clutch masters - full face bronze ceramic (ringer racing)
    Stock resurfaced DM flywheel
    JHM short throw
    Exhaust: SSAC true dual
Boost Gauge - built into the mirror
LC2 Wideband - mounting location pending-?
Bunch of seals and gaskets. Timing belt I did about 600 miles ago.
Bunch of other little stuff I'm forgetting.
Once the clutch is broken in, I have a dyno date at Kaizenspeed in spokane WA. Not much data on these turbos on 91 octane, so hopefully this becomes informative.

And a few photos up to to where I stand currently...

The shifter surround is now flat black, replaced the crappy fake CF one pictured. Door handles are also now black.

    And now here we are...

    Cheers

Cool. Awesome to see someone do this despite what people say about being on a stock block. I will be anxious to see how it goes!

My planned build will be very similar, 91 octane Phoenix AZ crap gas (all I have available), k24s and stock block. Definitely in for updates, I'll be following this build very closely.

I really like the boost built into the mirror. How did you do that, if you don't mind me asking?

A guy named Sergio built the mirror for me, you can find him on Quattroworld. Goes by "silva" on there.

Indeed! Been in a few K04 cars and just felt I would like a little more then they offer, probably being greedy though haha.

Not the turbos fault. Manifold cracked and a piece broke off and rocked the turbo.

    Kaizenspeed is in Kennewick btw

Do they have an AWD dyno? Ive been meaning to go over and check out thier shop and go to thier dyno days since its like 5 min away, but Im thinking its only a 2wd since they pump out alot of civics, supras, other sik tyte jdm cars. Either way very reputable shop and they do some high quality work. Good luck with the build!

Mentioned above, but look for the user "silva" on quattroworld, he built the boost gauge-mirror for me. You send him your mirror and he builds the gauge inside of it. super clean.

I called them and they said they did, I assume they do lots of subaru's as well being in the PNW.

First you need to grab and electric boost gauge. After that you have to take apart the boost gauge so its just the circuit board with the 7-segment display.
Next you take apart the mirror and using a razor blade or knife you cut the reflective film from the back of the mirror glass to the shape of the 7 segment display.
Then mount the boost gauge in the mirror. Seal it the mirror back up and wire it in. Wa-la

Mine doesn't have that black square though, it's totally invisible when the car is off. Sergio does a cleaner job than that.
And also you have to tap one wire from the kick panel to the boost pressure solenoid. It's the reverse light wire.

Looks like my timing was pretty good, when I separated the motor and tranny, found the inner race of the throw out bearing in pieces.

I'm also noticing the new throw out bearing is considerably taller then the old TOB. Anyone have input on this, going to cause any issues? It came with the clutch kit from ringer racing, so I'm assuming they know what they're doing, but this difference is pretty considerable.

That's the correct TOB for that pressure plate. It's the same one that my FX400 came with and everything works great. Clutch feel is actually considerably lighter than my Southbend Stage 2 Endurance, which had a RS4 Pressure Plate and OEM TOB.

BTW I'm finishing up a similar build, only slight differences.. Stock block K24's but on 93 octane, Daz tuned. I just flashed the first aggressive base file today. The car runs great. Very smooth.

The red hoses? They are just an ebay kit (seller- speed_daddy), although I haven't been able to apply any of them yet, so I really can't confirm their fitment. They were only $95 though, so I figure worse case scenario I get to use the lobster claws and a couple other hoses then it's a win.

Let me know how your car turns out!

Last couple nights we're pretty slow ones. Didn't have much time to work on it. Although I got my flywheel mailed off to clutchmasters for the resurface. Last night got the valve covers off and cleaned up, holy shit that was a lot of scrubbing, scuffed them with red scotch brite pads, prepped for paint now. 13 years of grime really accumulates :P

Anyone ever use the install kit from SRM? I'm not comfortable with the crush washers i got for the coolant lines. Notice how they are considerably larger then the OEM ones and don't fit snuggly around the banjo bolt. I don't think i'm going to use these. Will I be able to find suitable crush washers at autozone or napa?

notice the gap around the head of the bolt

Not stoked about this, I have a feeling finding these washers is going to be a PITA, and I'm not buying another install kit @ $70

Try Napa. Here local to me they make hydraulic lines so they stock crush washers. Its worth a shot.

Man, I wish I saw that you were using that "kit".. IT DOESN'T WORK I was Very reluctant to use it on my build with OE RS6 turbos.. But I did it anyway thinking "why would it be wrong?" My mistake.. After installing my motor and trying to fill with water it would leak at the turbo. So the 3rd time I changed out those washers and all good until it came to starting the car.. Then I had an oil leak. SMH.. Now I have to deal with ClutchNet.. Another stay away from issue. You can find some crush washers at AutoZone. They are called Oil drain plug gaskets. You should be able to find a multi-pack.

Interesting idea, I don't doubt that it probably would work, however I'm not going to risk another motor pull over some crush washers. I'll find some that fit one way or another. Just bummed Sean sold me a kit that is so far off the mark.

I wouldnt mess around with those washers. Too much at stake.
The ecs kit is solid, but missing 4 oil washers and the thick one for the coolant spacer on the dside.
They are not a lot of money so the dealer is a good option also. Prob have to order them though so might be a few day wait anyway.
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.

The ecs kit is solid, but missing 4 oil washers and the thick one for the coolant spacer on the dside.
They are not a lot of money so the dealer is a good option also. Prob have to order them though so might be a few day wait anyway.
Yeah I'm not using these. Ironically though, the oil crush washers he sent me are a perfect fit. So I'm not sure why the coolant washers are so far off. I'm heading to napa in a few minutes, going to see if I can source them locally first. Blah.

Well no luck finding good fitting crush washers locally, so ordered another set on friday, so once again I wait on parts to arrive. This thing is damn close to being done though, and if people could send me the right parts I could have finished this week, so much for that idea. That's ok though, I'm spending copious amounts of time cleaning 14 years of heavy grime and grease off the motor, it's looking so much better.

There is however one question at bay, has anyone used Daz's ev14 injectors? I noticed they are a tad taller then OEM injectors, and when connected to the fuel rail, it seems they sit a smidge high and you can actually see the lower o-ring when fully seated. I'm not clear if this is normal or if you can see it on the OEM injectors as well. Someone please tell me these aren't going to leak?

    injectors seated - orings visible...normal?

I'm not sure what size injector Daz sells but that injector can be pushed down further.

There are 3 types of EV-14 sizes, (48 mm being the standard I believe) if you are using these with no hats use the black 0-ring to seal it in the plenum. Also it does not look like your injector clocking is correct.

Good information about the EV-14's in here

That is my point, it feels like they can def go down further, but with the fuel rail connected it's not possible, unless I where to cut the 4 mounting tabs that secure the fuel rail to the manifold.

I trimmed my manifold posts for my EV14s - works great. You can always use spacers if you need more clearance down the road w/ different injectors.

Can trim the posts if you want, but the important part is oem orings.

Just make sure they end up seated in the cylindrical bore and not in the tapered part.
I have only seen a prob with this once because the previous (longer) injectors were cranked down without spacers and tweaked the rail.
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.

This is what i'm going to do, grind down the mounting points on the manifold, and switch to OEM injector o rings.
    Thanks guys.

EDIT: does clocking these really make a difference? I installed them the same way the oem injectors were, parallel to the rail. Should I clock them 90 deg out?
