    B8.5 S4 - Morimoto MLED 2.0 Retrofit Underway

    Hey guys,

I have a set of MLED 2.0's coming in with adapter plates and wiring adapters from EMtuning, plan is to upgrade over the Xmas holidays.

Retrofit should be about as plug and play as you can get with a significant increase in output, stay tuned :)

Dont you have to take off your headlight unit apart? I wouldnt say exactly plug and play.
I want to get this for my b8.5 s5, I dont feel comfortable taking the headlight unit apart. And I'm not sure how well it will stay together after that.

    Absolutely.

This is why I said "about as plug and play as you can get", with the keyword being about.

After you open them up, they bolt in just like the oem projectors.

All kidding aside, normally opening the headlight housings are not that difficult.

    Man I hope I didn't just jinx myself :)

I know heat gun is used. But my thing is, using silicon or something similar to reseal them and holding up for yrs to come.

I thought about getting ecodes, but the owner said there isnt much difference between the north American vs ecodes. Other than the obvious orange side markers.
He said these lights are better than ecodes.

I know another member on here did a comparison.

It would be nice if there was a good video tutorial.

Anyhow I cant wait to c the finished product.

Here's a good post on opening up our headlights:
    https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...eplacement-DIY

I haven't worked on our yet, but I've done my share of retrofits for my personal cars, so I'm not afraid to tackle them.

Most cars you simply place the HL in the oven for few minutes at 200º F and then work slowly to open them, dont force anything. I won't however touch BMW's as they typically have seals that don't soften at safer oven temps.

    No silicon.

Butyl tape. Same stuff that’s used to seal them now.

Man I'm really excited to see your results. I have a spare set of lights for my SQ5 and have been tempted to try this. EM tuning does a really nice job with stuff and good to work with.

A heat gun and prying it slowly worked for me. I swapped out the projector lenses in my A4. Definitely interested in the results though!

I can’t speak for the M-LEDs specifically, but they’re a 3” lens as well. I just ordered a set of NHK G5-R projectors from EMTuning for my AFS headlights and they’ll require some extra trimming to fit, but Trup at EM provided instructions for my swap over my vacation the next two weeks. I was thinking of putting together a thread, but that may be redundant at this point; although, I plan to also swap out my amber reflectors, black out all the chrome I can (unsure about the H7 bowls turn signals) and finally reseal with new lenses.

So what is the purpose of these "dimples" on the headlight projectors? Especially if they dont do a better job of lighting the road.

Sorry wasnt trying to. Just curious if there was a difference? Meaning if just replacing the lens vs the kit your using. Or is it just the kit u bought is more plug and play vs the retrofit lens.

Would it not be easier to swap in a G5-R or a HID projector that uses the factory d3s (you can also run a d2s) bulb to prevent errors on the dash? a MLED will require it's own power supply which means you'll have a dash light for bulb out/ballast out. I assume it can be coded out, but a G5-R will out perform the MLED and not require to code anything out.

According to EMtuning, the MLED 2.0 will out perform G5's with D3s bulbs, and the MLED will be purely plug and play, no error codes were mentioned.

I will report any issues for sure !

Definitely update us on the MLED being plug and play. I don't see how that's possible unless they provide some sort of adapter/error canceler as you'd have your ballast disconnected, or at least not connected to the d2s bulb if you're leaving the ballast on the car to plug the big hole on the bottom of the headlight it would leave.
The MLED uses a 9006 connector to connect to it's own power source, which you won't have on your S4 without some kind of adapter or rewiring, which would make it not plug and play at all.

See the picture for the reference of the 9006 connector on the MLED driver. I'm curious how you're going to get around that and it still be plug and play.

EDIT: I'm also interested how you'll tie in your high beams, as I don't recall seeing a 9006 connector on the factory projector when I did my ZKW lens swap. Maybe there is one and I missed it.

    These help.

I believe high beam input comes from the cut-off shield solenoid wire.

Yes you will need adapters he is probably providing in the kit. The solenoid for the high beam may need an adapter as well but looks like that might be part of the kit too. There is no separate beam as stated, just the shutter.

Ha - no worries, glad to help, I've done this before for my previous Evo X so I'm fairly comfortable, especially since this does not require any cutting/grinding/gluing at all. Below is my previous work on my Evo X:

The only PITA is that the facelift q5 lights are permasealed and aren't going to open easily just using the oven. Ask me how I know...

By the way since it sounds like you have opened yours before, have you found a source for euro/black sidemarkers? When inquired to Zwork in chicago they said those were not available for q5 lights

Yeah they were a huge pain to open up. Honestly if I do another with the spare lights I have now, is probably pay someone just to open them.

The side markers I just painted. I was only going to do the back, but they are kind of curved and got some over spray on them so I did the whole thing. Just use a good paint for plastic, they come out nicely.

Most of the way there on the driver's side, currently looking at designing a custom solution to mount the LED driver.

Time to use my elementary CAD and 3d printing skills :)

Taking my time, not really looking to complete the install today.

Only casualty so far was the main HL wiring harness securing clip, I barely touched it and it snapped..

Why would you need to design a mount? Did it not come with a mount that it needs?
