For a vehicle not equipped with Audi Drive Select, activated via OBDEleven, question.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

Another query regarding a function OBDEleven. Most things seem to work well and easily adjusted in the 'APP' section.
I've always been curious with ADS and have activated it.

So now the ADS functions come up, via using the MMI (since my vehicle doesn't have the physical buttons) The; Individual, Efficiency, Dynamic & comfort modes are all there and once selected, then it confirms in the Tacho; 'Comfort mode selected'.

However, it doesn't seem to really do anything. I understand that vehicles not originally equipped with ADS; wont have the steering & suspension controls.
But I recall seeing that Throttle response & Gearbox function can be active on non ADS vehicles.

Could find much in the search, this was probably the closest; https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...e+drive+select

Also, Ive read that if a vehicle has the 'Efficency' mode selected, the automatic gearbox should show 'E' gear/s rather than displaying 'D' 1,2,3,4,5, 6 & 7 etc
which isn't happening when I have it in Efficiency mode.

So is it really that simple, or does one have to buy one of those OEM ADS buttons or has a mistake been made somewhere?

    cheers

My question is, is it really that simple

I've used OBDevelen to mess with ads and changed steering and throttle to dynamic but didn't touch gearbox if it was there. Pretty sure modifying ads through coding still affects steering as mine stiffened up a lot, changing throttle also had the car rev up a lot quicker. Ended up changing it back to default or automatic since I didn't like either of the changes. I believe you only need the ads button if you want to be able to change on the go without needing to code it again.

You only unlock the option in the MMI. Your car can't do something it physically isn't equipped with.

I made these changes via VCDS for dynamic steering and engine options. I didn't notice too much for the engine but steering was much stiffer.

    This!!!!
If your car is not equipped with the proper items activating sw to control that equipment that is not installed only gives you another display to look at.

My car was not equipped with ADS but I have activated it, steering gets heavier in Dynamic mode and there is a small increase in throttle response (emphasis on small). I have a manual gearbox so I can't comment on transmission changes.

Did you follow the steps that you have to do via the "Green menu" in car? I activated mine via carista, but there was a second step where I had to go into the MMI's green menu to finish the process. Prior to this it gave me additional drive select options like "Offroad" and "Efficiency" once I completed that extra step those disappeared and I was left with the typical "Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Individual" options. It was only after that ADS actually began functioning

This is exactly what I observed. I'm manual as well, so cannot comment on the shifting.

For certain systems, you can enable ADS and feel the difference.

I suspect it is placebo effect the steering rack for ads is different than non ads vehicle. There is the off chance that the production line ran short on non ads steering rack and put the ads rack in your car. My father worked QC at gm and vw plants and it was not unusual for them to substitute parts on the line.

Dynamic steering is simply the system that makes the steering wheel weight at low speeds and heavier at high speeds. I thought most of these cars were equipped with that? My parent's former 2012 A4 Premium FronTrak had it, and mine acts similarly to that car. Neither car came factory with ADS.

I could be wrong but I think the difference is that cars with the ADS rack don't have Dynamic steering and therefore maintain the heavy steering weight for example at all times in dynamic mode. My car will still experience lighter steering at low speeds in dynamic mode, but when the steering weights up it's heavier than it would be in comfort given the same conditions. Last time I drove my parents ADS equipped A7 it seemed to keep the heavy steering regardless of speed when in Dynamic.

Long story short I think it works, but not quite same as a factory ADS car.

A ring with multiple outer recesses is attached to the electric motor driven hollow shaft. The cylindrical plunger of the solenoid engages these recesses.
The hollow shaft is thereby locked, and the eccentric bearing can no longer be driven by the electric motor. The plunger locks the dynamic steering gear without electrical current, and is held in its limit stop position by a compression spring.

If the magnetic coil is activated via the discrete from control unit J792, the plunger is moved towards the magnetic coil against the pressure of the spring. The plunger is thereby disengaged releasing the hollow shaft and the dynamic steering gear.

Two sensor units (G419 and G536) are used on vehicles with dynamic steering. The sensor units are functionally identical and, when intact, deliver identical signals for yaw rate and transverse acceleration. The sensor units can be distinguished externally by their connectors.

To represent a safe fallback mode in the event of a system fault or failure, the dynamic steering gear can be locked (disabled) mechanically. During normal operation, the lock is engaged whenever the internal combustion engine is shut off.

When the engine is started, the dynamic steering system is unlocked, as indicated by an audible "click" noise.

Locking is provided by a solenoid bolted onto the gearbox housing

No. The difference in steering feel is significant. Particularly at low speeds, obviously.

And this change is alleged to improve throttle response. No way. However, I am always in S mode, no matter where I have the shift lever. So I do get more aggressive shifting.

I went to 09 - Cent Elect > Adaptation I set channels 63-66 so they all read 4. Now I have Audi Drive Select in my MMI when I hit the Car button. Then I can choose Engine/Gearbox and scroll to Dynamic. Now I cannot put it in D. Or if I do, it ignores me.

To make that work, you also have to enable carisma in the green menu.

Placeeeeebo. All "Drive select" does in "Dynamic" is systemically change your transmission from D to S. Steering is the same. Everything else is the same. You want "Dynamic" mode in a non ADS car? Change your shifter from D to S. That's it. No VCDS needed.

Okay to clear up the confusion here, I did some research and their are two types of steering systems I have found.

Servotronic(Standard Setup in North American Cars)-offers variable steering assistance based on speed

Dynamic Steering (available with drive select)- Offer a variable steering ratio dependent on speed

With this information, one can conclude that a car without dynamic steering still has the both the hardware and software already integrated to make the steering lighter or heavier based on the activation and setting of Drive Select via VCDS. However, it does NOT have the capability of adjusting the steering ratio, like a car with dynamic steering would. This would indicate that the VCDS mod does half what the factory Drive Select with dynamic steering does, that is making the steering weight heavier, but leaving the ratio the same.

Confirming this, our 2013 A7 with factory equipped Drive Select does not have dynamic steering, it has the same "electro-mechanical speed sensitive power steering" that is listed on the window sticker for my 2013 A4 without factory Drive Select.

Hopefully that clears the air a bit!

My understanding (which could be wrong) was all/most have servtronic and it is not adjustable. Not being argumentative just thought that was what i read in ross tech forums years ago.

You could be correct; my example only seems to confirm the possibility of it for 2013+ cars as both my A4 and family's A7 have electric power steering vs the hydraulic setup from 09-12. Perhaps having electric power steering is a requirement? or maybe it's not but you have to have a particular iteration of a module on the cars with hydraulic steering?

I will say though, when I activated ADS via Carista it appeared as a menu in MMI but wasn't actually functional, once I completed the green menu steps it became functional and gave me the settings applicable to my car. Maybe people are skipping this step? I sure did at first.

I appreciate your response, others inputing their knowledge is how we learn here, if I say something inaccurate or miss a point feel free to correct me!

I did the same. 09 - Cent Elect > Adaptation I set channels 63-66 so they all read 4, gets you a pretty menu that does nothing. You have to enable carista in the green menu before anything changes.

As far as I know, Channels 63 to 66 are only for the presets.
I did mine by these instructions (in German, so I must be right, right? ), and it works well.

    Anpassung der Codierung im Bordnetzteuergerät

    STG 09 (Bordnetz) auswählen

STG Lange Codierung -> Funktion 07

    Byte 7, bit 5, von 0 auf 1

Of course, you need the corresponding hardware.

Steering is not the same when you make this change. After i applied this change, the steering was NOTICEABLY heavier at speed compared to before. If there are certain measuring blocks to log this in VCDS, I would be happy to log and share.

I dont understand why you are so combative and down right dickish.

You NOTICEABLY have been taking a good dose of the placebo pill.

Is MMI required for ADS to "activate" via VCDS?

No, you can make the change in VCDS. You just won't have the ability to change it on the fly like the MMI can. I have the base AMI, so when I scan I get an error (soft code) that the charisma switch isn't there. No big deal.

Old thread i know, found it while seraching for other stuff and just wanted to add for future searchers that this guy is wrong. (at least in my case)
On my 2008 S5 with servotronic the steering weight will be different if you retrofit ADS. Comfort is the lightest all the time, auto gets it heavier with speed and dynamic is heavy all the time basically.

Since this has already been resurrected, I’ll add my allroad’s config to the list:

Premium Plus trim w/ Drive Select option
    (including physical button)

NO auxiliary steering cooler circuit to relocate during FMIC install

Definite steering feel difference between S and all others at all speeds (unchanged after obd11 edits). Wife will immediately notice if I leave it in S before she drives next.

Added “Efficiency” mode with obd11 and I enjoy the more conservative shift logic - holds gear with more Throttle % than other modes and keeps rpm’s low in light load driving.
