I agree with theiceman. Everyone with an avant wants to call their car a unicorn.

    thanks for your insight.

I had planned to buy the car from him in 2016, because he was planning to upgrade to a TT-RS, S4, or 911. unfortunately he was diagnosed with cancer (pancreatic) and died within 6 months of his diagnosis. I bought a 2014 S4 earlier this year and the Avant stayed parked in my garage, so the decision was made after a lot of conversations and thought. it was not an easy sale by any means.

    but ok.

well, a non-sline, grey, automatic, base Avant, is not unicorn.

A red , fully loaded, S4, avant 6mt ; is a unicorn. The audizine member with this S4 call for 1of1 or 1of3 made in us , can't recall

Also, the ocean blue, sline, 3.2L , 6mt, TI; the owner didn't check yet with audi , but it possibly be also 1of1.

There's no definition of ''unicorn'' , but something 1of10 should be it. Mine is definitely not a unicorn, despite the fact is pretty rare. About 1of100 in canada.

I agree completely. The “off the lot” colors (white/black/grays) are not, but a4 avants that are red, sprint blue, ocean/Moro/midnight blue WITH titanium pkg is super rare. All 3.2 6mt with ti package are rare.

A red s4 avant? Idk, doesn’t seem like it to me, but if those numbers are true I suppose it is. The range of colors of the s4 that you could drive off the lot without special order was much broader.

Overall I think we all get too precise on that the option / color combos. Clearly the further you go the more likely you’ll find a small population of similar cars.

on our cars price range, we rely on combo for unicorn status. No choice. Its no a pagani... And I don't think audi were allowing special orders, just like some color on golf R.

Bottom line is there are so many options available on cars. Just about every car off the line is a "one off" . Its not a big deal to me really.
Plus rare does not equal desirable. But I get it. Guys are proud of their rides and want them to be special and think they are worth more.

Calling All Unicorns - B7 A4 Avant 6 Speed Manual Titanium

I don’t really put a ton of stock in rarity per-se. and TI avants are all over this forum (relative to the general car driving populace) because they’re special and the people who like them are generally enthusiasts who post on car forums more often than not.

Highlighter green exterior, pink fabric interior and Ti package Avant might be rare, but that doesn’t make it special, just hideous. I know some people get a boner for things simply because they’re rare. And that’s cool, but I don’t think many of us in this thread are like that. I love my car because it’s has the 3 most important options of a b7 imo: 6mt, titanium package, avant. Regardless of what people might joke about on here, those three things are incredibly rare. Go on Autotrader at any given time and you might see one single example amid 250-300 or so other b7s nationwide. That denotes a rare/special/hard to find car to me.

And they ARE worth more, just because they’re not worth more to you, doesn’t make it a lie. Sales prices confirm this 100%.

It’s like the B6 Ultrasport. It was a limited run trim package, basically same deal as the Ti (but actually it was a much larger visual change from the standard b6). Plenty of bozos would argue up and down about they’re not special, they’re not worth more (and the real “tell” was “I wouldn’t pay more for one”), etc. same arguments I’m seeing in here. But I sold my b6 ultrasport sedan for about 30-40% more than the going rate for a 2004 6mt sedan and probably 50% more than a tiptronic sedan. You could argue it was a fluke, but I had plenty of interest at my price.

Same deal when I was briefly selling my avant. I listed it at 19k back in 2014. I got offers at 18k. I decided not to sell. it wasn’t about the sale price for me, I decided I’d rather keep the more practical avant since we were having kids so I sold my b6 ultrasport instead. But the point is, you can say whatever you want, believe whatever you want, but the market absolutely disagrees with your assessment of value of a 6mt Ti avant.

None of this is trying to make anyone feel bad at all. Or make us feel superior. It’s just numbers and facts. That’s all. Non Ti avants are still beautiful, practical cars. Nobody would argue otherwise.

Insurance question for you guys. Do you factor the relative rarity of your car into your coverage somehow? I have car replacement assistance on my USAA policy, but I feel like that would fall a bit short should anything happen to my Avant.

I have thought about this too. I don’t think progressive offer replacement coverage, but they do offer performance parts insurance up to 5k.

I have kind of just determined that if the car gets totaled, I am just shit out of luck. Probably part it out and move on.

there's a post on bmw forums about this exact issue. A guy who lightly smash the front of his car, a rare 2011 6mt wagon, with nice options.

The insurance want to total the car, since the online comparative were cheap. The guy had to argue that there's NO comparative to a such rare car.

At the end, it was all about negotiation; to prove his car was so rare, that it worth more, and he won't be able to find a new one.

At the end he ''won''. The car didn't get a totalled title, but he got a very cheap compensation, that won't even cover the repair cost.

When one of my avants got totaled, it wasn't even "rare" but it was still an avant and hard to find. (b5 1.8t 5spd). After it got totaled, the insurance wanted to give me a payout amount. i declined it and said, this was a rare car and hard to replace at the amount your paying me. SO i sent them 3-5 examples of previous for sale posts for similar cars, and they ended up paying out a little bit more. ~$900 extra.

In the past ive insured aftermarket parts on my cars, aka line itemizing. but Ive never seen an option to insure for "rarity" short of insuring with a company like hagarty and you can give them the value you want to insure your car at, then they give a quote. I work at edelbrock, and many people with rare muscle cars, insure with them.

This is mine, 2008 Ibis 6MT, bought it from my friend that was the original owner. It has 120K miles on it with KW V3's, H&R sways and custom tune. Only driving it in the summer now and saving up to fix all the surface rust starting to form! Eventually, if the engine ever goes out I would like to 2.7 swap it.

Since this thread has been revived recently - OP had said B7 6MT Ti Avants; wondering now, multiple years later, how many are still around and at what mileage. Mine's not Ti (bought new, 1 of 13 in Canada, Dolphin Gray 6MT) but is still in use on a regular basis (currently 196,000KM) - also been lucky enough to find a B9 Technik S-Line with 6MT, so feel I have two unicorns - last of the 6MT Avants (Ti or not) and last of the 6MT A4's in Canada/USA.

Mines still kicking. 110k miles and awaiting a heart transplant soon-ish. Current engine still runs, but swapping a built engine in with drop in rods and bored to 83mm. It’s a 2008 Brilliant black 6mt Ti Avant.

Once it’s broken in I’ll see about putting a k04 on it. I have two k04s, one in good shape, one not so much…

mine still looks good, 130k km. Stop using it during winters since 2018.

I put all the classics mods, and I want more, and feeling like this platform wont give it.

I've tasted the E91 platform, and despite the fact those 2 cars are very comparable, bmw is over audi on those chassis.

Got a excel sheet , with parts and prices, and for the same amount of money I could realistically get 370bhp on a heavy tuned 2.0t or 560bhp on a swapped E91. Those e chassis parts are cheaper , available, and easy to work on.
2.7tt swap will cost way more, and expecting , for the money, a realistic 420bhp.

Can't decide yet, have both car, stop putting money on the B7 for now until I figure out. read here, until I have time.

Not a Unicorn by any means, just a bog standard 2006 A4 Avant S-line 2.0 tdi, 6 speed manual. But with over 223,000 miles/359,000Km on the clock now and as far as I can tell original everything she runs as smoothly as a 5 yr old and has been doing all over Europe (until lockdown) with me reliably ever since I bought her.

That's kind of you to say katter but here in Europe there might be more of them than any other A4 B7. Popular reps car - which with BT phone prep and multifunctional steering wheel, as the only extras I think it was once upon a time, probably why it's survived (mostly highway/proper services). Though cloth seats were initially a disappointment (who'd pay 30K sterling in 2006 for their personal car and not stump for the leather extra?) I have been mighty glad of them under the searing Andalusian sun and they are spotless after 15/5 years. With wireless Android Auto that I added it's difficult to let go too. It's probably hard to see the point of the 4 cylinder diesels stateside but they are quite smooth (virtually inaudible inside) and very tractable and with a 70 litre tank over 700 miles is possible - I know I've done it - filled up at Bordeaux France once and when I pulled in to the North of England still had a a 1/4 tank or more left. Although it takes nearly 10 seconds to get the old gal to 60, she will do an honest 130mph, all day long autobahn permitting, and 70 is only about 2200rpm. Once up to speed they are highway cruisers par excellence with powerful overtaking torque and veritable goats at the climb. Many a new big 4x4 has been annoyed to have to get out of the way on the steep Mediterranean ascents. This car is the last of the non-dpfs too which makes it even more trouble free (dirty old diesel, I know ha ha). Regular 6K oil/filter change and good Michelin tyres (she's had a few!). These engines are infamous for death by oil pump but I very much doubt mine has ever had the sump off since it left Ingolstadt in 06 and many a cabbie saw 400K + likewise here out of these engines. My mate had a 2.0TFsi, which you're all familiar with and I envied the separate twin pipes and fast set off but it was a thirsty beggar for both oil and petrol. The time has come to move on, though the quarter million mark would be nice first - I plan to give it away to a friend's son but that won't lessen the sadness for a very faithful steed indeed. A very prosperous NY to you all.

Calling All Unicorns - B7 A4 Avant 6 Speed Manual Titanium

I mean we didn’t even get a diesel here stateside. Audi’s first diesel ever (at least since the 80s) was the Q7 I think. We got some random ones. I think the only other ones were a Q5 TDI and an A6 TDI.

VW always had Jetta and Passat TDIs but not much more than that. Americans don’t like diesel unless it’s in truck form.

This is my 2007 Ibis white Avant 6 speed with the Titanium Package. I’ve had it for about 3 years, I didn’t get the titanium package wheels when I bought the car. It has a tune and a Milltek exhaust, a few other things. It’s always for sale if anyone is interested. Just PM me. I attached a picture hopefully it works, I don’t post much and have no clue what I’m really doing.

I know, it's really strange they caused so much pollution during 'Diesel gate', isn't it?

I had one of those dieselgate Jettas. It was great because I was driving 200 miles a day and when that job ended, they bought it back 🤣🤣

    Perfect timing.

I just picked up a 2008 yesterday! Totally stock, pretty well maintained, but needs a few things.
186k miles, minimal rust underneath(odd for NE car), body in great shape overall.
Super surprising there was 3(yes 3) for sale within 2 hrs of me. 2 dolphin grey, one quartz grey(still for sale).

I was ready to rebuild/build the engine in my sedan, so gonna change to this. Basically a refresh with forged rods, clutch kit, and a few upgrades. Then I'll swap over a bunch of stuff from my sedan. K04 setup, b8 s4 seats, KW coilovers, Brembos, sway bars, etc. Then I'll get rid of the sedan, it's showing it's age(255k miles).
Sedan will be a donor while going back to stock(kinda). Sedan is an auto.
