Routing the AMI iPhone lightning cable from the glovebox to a dash mount

I bought my Allroad a few weeks ago and among other things, it didn't come with an AMI cable. I've never had a car with a proprietary audio cable, so this was somewhat foreign. Coming from a Subaru WRX with an upgraded headunit, I was used to luxuries like a USB cable to charge and play music from my iPhone. After talking to a buddy who owns an SQ5, he told me all about the 6" AMI that comes with our cars. I, like most people, stream my music from services like Spotify, so I immediately began researching how I can get phone out of the glove box and into an in-dash mount. It took some trial and error and after buying a few crappy cables on Amazon, I found a combo that charges my phone AND is registered as an iPhone by the MMI. WIN!

First, I bought a used AMI > Lightning cable from eBay because there's no way I'm paying Audi $85 for a cable. Then I got a few lightning > lightning extension cables (a few because we all know the junk that is sold on Amazon). I had a Panavise in-dash mount on my WRX, which I loved, so I picked up one for the Allroad as well. Then I reused the swivel and cradle that I already had. At this point, all I needed to do is get the extension cable out of the glove box and behind the dash to have it come out behind the climate controls or the ashtray.

I spent hours researching the forums looking for someone who had done this, but all I found were people who wanted to re-route the AMI cable to the center console cubby. The only person who did something close to what I was looking for was dropshadow's thread. His post is a few years old and uses some old technology that isn't really relevant anymore, however, he routed it similarly to what I did.

    Here's what I did...

    Parts Used
    Panavise In-Dash mount (part #75102-109)
Panavise APMS swivel mount (part #685-PM)
    Panavise PortaGrip (part #15575)
    AMI Lightning cable (part #4F0051510AL)
    Cellularize lightning extension

    First...the finished product

And the view from the glovebox...

    Step 1
Remove the glovebox. I followed this guide

    Step 2
Route the male end of the extension cable through the top right exit hole of the glovebox

    Step 3
Remove the panel in the left passenger footwell, closest to the front of the car. This is held on by a few clips. Start pulling from the right side, closest to the front of the car.

    Step 4
Remove the climate control. I used the first part of this thread

    Step 5
At this point, if you look into the space where the climate control goes, you should be able to see some light from the passenger footwell. Reach into this hole with your left hand and with your right hand, feed in the lightning cable from the opening in step 3. You can see my finger poking through from the back.

    Step 6
Feed the lightning cable through the hole in the top right corner on the underside of the climate control unit

    Step 7
Re-install climate control and glovebox, but don't re-attach the foam cover under the glovebox. Your lightning cable should now be poking out the bottom of the climate control.

    Step 8
Hide the lightning cable above the foam piece at the back of the footwell and behind the panel on the left (from step 3)

    Step 9
Go back to the glovebox and route the female end of the lightning extension through the netting and plug into the male end of the AMI cable. Push it back into the netting to keep it out of the way

    Step 10
Re-install the footwell panel and foam piece under the glovebox. Congrats...You now have access to your phone while it charges from the AMI port

    Hell yes!

I’ve been doing this for a little over 2 years now, although I was using the 30 pin AMI connector to the Lightning adapter that Apple used to sell, then to an extension.

When I upgraded to iOS 13 it stopped working and I’m guessing it’s because of the ami cord I have. Purchased the lightning ami so hopefully I’ll see a change!

Glad someone else is doing this. Odd how my MK6 golf 2.5l had Bluetooth audio but my 2011 Audi doesn’t. Weird.

Couldn’t agree more. Luckily, my ‘14 has Bluetooth, but I just couldn’t bring myself to plug in a charger into the cigarette lighter.

Hope you get your setup working again with the new cable!

They sell Bluetooth adapters for the AMI connection on Amazon. Been using one for over a year now and love it. Incoming phone calls stop music and full phone controls work.

I got one from Amazon and really pissed I didn’t do it first. I originally had the cable running from the glove box to the center console. Did a whole lotta work, when the B/T adapter was simple plug and play.

I don’t mind the Bluetooth too much even if the audio quality is a bit worse. I mainly did this so I could use my phone without having to pull it out of the glove box and disconnect it from the AMI cable. I mostly play music via Spotify, so navigating with the MMI was not an option

I just purchased this setup as well. Looking forward to a real mounting solution as well as not being ridiculed for not having an aux cable lol.

Haha you’ll be glad you did, trust me. So much cleaner than any other method I’ve seen.

OK... so I have a few questions. I have a 2015 A4 with the MMI 3G plus and and iPhone XR. I added the AMI lightning cable and extension. The problems I have that seem to make this a useless venture are as follows. Bluetooth works great with everything, phone calls, iTunes and streaming (pandora, Amazon etc.) but you need a charging source. When my phone is connected through the AMI, it won't let you have both bluetooth and AMI connected so you have to disconnect bluetooth and therefore lose phone connectivity. It seems to prioritize the AMI over bluetooth and is a pain to disconnect via the phone. Am I doing something wrong? I can get music to play from Amazon but the AMI insists on pulling from iTunes and usually has incorrect track info while amazon music is playing.

I don’t know of a way to prevent that message from showing up, but you can bypass it by pressing one of the other MMI buttons (for example, Radio) and then click back to Media. A minor annoyance, but still lets you use Bluetooth and charge at the same time.

Used your guide to route a lightning extension to the dash on a 2010 S4. Just wanted to say thanks.

Using Amazon Music to stream and apart from the odd song title not displaying correctly it’s working well. 👍

Can you all post links to the best MMI Bluetooth adapters you use that provide the most functionality?

    Thanks!

My MMI is the 3G+, which has Bluetooth built-in, so I don’t have much experience with adapters. However, I’ve read a lot of people mentioning tune2air, so I would start there. If you wanna go all out, try the RSNav

This has been covered quite extensively on the forum as well, so try a quick search with something like “Bluetooth adapter”. Best of luck!
