Coolant temperature sensor location on 3.2 fsi

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm almost about to lose my mind. I've been searching a lot to find pictures of the coolant temp sensor location on the 3.2 fsi engine. I read that it is located on the passenger side under the intake manifold but I couldn't find any pictures. I don't want to go in there and then not find it/remove a different sensor. Please send help. Thanks!

It’s on the hard coolant line right in front of the engine. Just remove the 3.2 plastic engine cover and you’ll see it. Probably the only Audi where it’s easily accessible.

You the man! Dude I've been searching for this the whole day. Just one more question, there is only one such 2 pin sensor as opposed to two as on some other cars right? I will find you and I'll buy you a beer!

Haha no problem, there’s just that one sensor and I believe it’s a green 4 pin sensor. There might be other sensors around the radiator but any of those are for climate control I think. That’s the only sensor that the ECU reads and shows the coolant temp on the dash.

As far as I understand, there is one coolant temp sensor on the 3.2 fsi which has two pins. I'll update this thread in the morning when I replace it with my findings. Thanks again!

Fixed! That is the two pin sensor on the front. Hopefully it will get rid of my codes. Any poor soul on the internet looking for the cooling temp sensor on the 3.2 fsi, you don't need to go any further.

oh men, I was one of those poor souls until this topic :) But I do have a question, can I just pop it out, or will I doing so cause coolant to spray or leak out? I would like to avoid wasting time going to mechanic for this.

    Greatly appreciate the answer!

Don't go to the mechanic at all, this is the easiest job in the world. Just pop a plastic clip on the sensor, it goes sideways and not up or down, and pull the sensor out. Replace with the new sensor and put the plastic clip back in. If you take more than five minutes, you are taking your sweet time!

Just qent to see it, and yeah, this must be one of the simplest things.
Another very simple is purge valve, literally 1 min to replace. :D

So i dont have to worry about spilling coolant and get sprayed at :D

Don't worry about coolant spilling, it will be very minimal. Make sure the car is cold and you should be good.

Car tends to start rough, or cranks long and then starts with a jerk, or turns off while cranking.
No CEL, no issues. And then when it starts, starts good until it cools down half way down. When it cold completely starts good(ish)
    Hot, starts good.

Today we did vacuum smoke test, nothing.
    Spark plugs, hpfp, new
For now only thing what's showing on diagnostic is camshaft sensor bank1, which I did replace as well, so doubting it's the connector to the sensor, so I ordered one...

    Fuel filter replaced...

When it runs runs like a bumblebee

It’s the ECU. 90% of the problems these cars get are usually caused by the ECU. It’s the first car Audi didn’t use Bosch for the ECU and they’re complete trash. They have such a high failure rate that you just can’t even get used ECUs because the used one will have another issue. I sent my ECU out to module experts to get it rebuilt as they’ve worked on these Siemens VDO 3.2 ECUs. They diagnosed it and said the main control board is beyond the point of repair so they’re making a cloned remanufactured unit for me. It’s been almost a month now and I was supposed to have it weeks ago. Hopefully they’re legit and I’ll actually get it back... but I’ll update if it fixes my problems. It sucks that this happens to a lot of 3.2s.

It’s in the furthest back driver side of the engine bay. A new one is around $1200 plus probably $200 to clone it to your specific car. The rebuild I’m going with was supposed to be $240 plus shipping, but now since they have to apparently build another unit for me I’m getting charged $1000. That is if I ever get it back...

Why not make sure that the ecu is the problem before you go about changing it? If you are not sure, go to a good indie shop and have them do the diagnosis for you. Don't make the classic mistake of throwing parts before knowing the actual problem.

Of course I won't. Never heard of ECU failure tbh.

But we r running out of ideas.

Typically random problems and weird starting symptoms without any check engine codes almost always points to the ECU. It’s just really hard to diagnose an ECU without some expensive equipment.

Just curious what codes you were getting as I am currently getting P2181 which is telling me to change my engine coolant thermostat.

    Thank you

I got that same code and replaced the faulty Thermostat on my 2.0T last March and all is well ever since. Before that my temp gauge was fluctuating between 1/4 to below 1/2 readings.
