    B6 Headlight upgrade

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi Guys,
I'm sure this has been discussed already and I apologize for asking again, but I need to know what is the easiest way to bring my 13 yrs. B6 A4 xenon headlights to today's state of the art headlight brightness. I'm looking for easy to swap option . Ideally another set of headlights that I can easily install and remove . I'm assuming upgrading the bulbs alone is not worth with 13 yrs. old lenses -
probably will refurbish the lenses in my original headlight once I have them out, but right now I'm looking for easy swap brighter new headlights .

This is what I have now :

    Thanks !

    I would:

    - refinish the lens covers, since they don't look that bad
    - install a TRS mini-H1 bixenon kit (includes projectors) w/5500K 55W XB1 bulbs

unfortunately there's nothing you can buy ready to go that uses high quality internals and has a high-quality housing, save for an new OEM setup (US or EU spec). All of the aftermarket housings are significantly lower quality, all of the projectors etc in aftermarket housings are lower quality than OEM.

I did a write-up 5 or 6 years ago detailing using the TRS mini-H1 setup in some aftermarket Depo EU spec (ecode) housings. While my light quality is still outstanding, the housings themselves have basically fallen apart and required periodic fixing, mainly from the door cover locking mechanism.

Matt, thank you very much for the input . Do you have a link to your write up and a link where to buy the TRS mini-H1 bixenon kit ?

I don't think I need the long beam to be xenon. Maybe is better to get a brand new OEM headlights and retrofit the kit you suggested.

How about the LED retrofit options, that are so popular these days ?

new OEM housings are expensive, I'd just pay the $100 to have yours refinished/sealed.

the bixenon setup doesn't change the hi-beam bulb, it just opens the blocking plate on the low-beam in addition to the halogen high beam.

I've yet to see any LED retrofit kits that provide the same (or better) quality light output than the TRS mini-H1 kit. I think they're fine for fogs etc, but I'd stick with xenon for the main beam.

TRS has an LED projector kit that I was going to get for my Nova, you could try that if you really wanted. It looks expensive but realistically, it's not much more than the cost of projectors, bulbs, ballasts, and shrouds. It's like $50 more.

the TRS mini-H1 kit is ~$300 and pretty close to plug/play. Can you link to a LED-based projector kit that similarly bolts right up in place of the stock projectors?

It's H4, unfortunately. But I'm sure they have adapter harnesses. I don't know if the dimensions are the same for that adapter specific to retrofit B6's, though.

I was just saying there's an LED option if he's wanting to "upgrade" over HID's.

OK, but how is that setup quantifiably better than the mini-H1 kit?

    I'm not saying it is.

I even said "upgrade" because I personally don't see what's so special about LEDs. I was just letting the OP know that the same company that makes amazing HID components/systems now has LED products as well.

x2 on the Mini H1 setup from TRS.

They even sell Mini H1 projector brackets that bolt right up to OEM and Depo housings.

They're made of fiberglass now too. They used to be mild steel, which are the ones I have. Prone to rusting with the moisture that can build up inside the DEPO housings.

The LED kit will require additional resistors in order to avoid the "bulb out" warning in the dash. That kit is driving only 25W. Our CAN-BUS is sensing either 35W for Xenon bulbs or 55W for halogen main bulbs. Also, that Lumens rating of 2812 is far lower than what you get from a Xenon bulb (3200-3600). It will be much brighter and throw light farther than halogen, but still less than Xenon.

With that said, I've done the same thing Matt has done. I got the Depo housings and the Morimoto mini H1 bi-Xenon projector kit. I agree the back covers are a weak point in the housings. I've done what I could, but still deal with some mild condensation which goes away after a day or two.

I have done research and have been able to use LED bulbs with this setup. I did research to understand the wattage of the driver and the Lumen output to be equal or greater than the Xenon bulb. Found the bulbs out on eBay through some trial and error. Happy with the results so far.

I have Mini H1 v7's with the XB 5.5k bulbs and 55w ballasts by fast bite (their clearance section $40)

Brightest and widest lighting setup you can get. Direct bolt-in and no shrouds needed.

I installed a single Mini H1 v7 on my motorcycle just because it was that good.

The retrofit source runs great coupons during the holidays or special events. Keep an eye out for them and you can get all this stuff pretty cheap. Also the clearance section was good at one point.

Brilliant cut-off, crisp output. Available in different temperature ranges. Naturally, I won’t be fitting them with the outer lenses, just the guts. They would be great for foglamps too, though I’ll buy main beam versions, without the beam cut-off option.
