Will do! They arrive Sunday, but high of 14 and snow, so... probably not going in right away.

Isn't that why you have a heated garage - JK. I don't miss that weather that's for sure.

It's been a while... Happy Spring! (currently 26 degrees and snowing...)

The Phillips LED fog lights are in. They're a little bit whiter than the headlights and closer to the color of the DRL, but not a perfect match to either. It's a much better match than any blue tinted halogen bulb though. I'm 50/50 between these and the yellow PIAA halogen bulbs. I like the white for coming/leaving home lights, but the yellow for driving. Since I do a lot of night driving on backroads I might stick with the yellow PIAA.

I've really been enjoying the K04 kit so far. There's been one issue that I can't replicate. While cruising, if I begin to accelerate and roll into the throttle a bit the car will violently cut the throttle in and out until I take my foot off and reapply the throttle. Some days it's awful, other days it doesn't happen at all. No codes in VCDS. Logging with the APR Mobile app is a pain in the butt. The app crashes frequently and of course whenever I try to log the car drives fine. My first guess is a plug/coilpack issue (all new). Anyone else run into this before?

    Spring to-do list:
-Ordered parts to retrofit puddle lights in the mirrors from an A6, will need to install when they arrive
-Minor paint correction (hard water marks from sprinkler) and ceramic coating
-Confirm fitment and install KW rear spring spacers to bring the back up a little
-FIS Control module whenever that is released (ETA April, so any day now?)
-Torn between larger front/rear brakes and redoing the seats/headliner in my Jetta. We'll see which comes to fruition first, but I can't justify both this spring. The interior is already out of the Jetta for other projects, but having a difficult time communicating with the guy I would like to do the work.
    -Maybe sway bars?

How are the B16s holding up, what is your current FTG? You mentioned 3 settings sport, comfort, and auto, I was under the impression that more adjustments were possible with the mobile app? I’m in the market for coils if you couldn’t tell and am concerned about the lack of adjustment in the rear as well as rubbing.

Found and subscribed to this thread - thanks for all the info! Got though about 85% of this thread and realized you most likely live a few minutes from me as I'm in Waukesha, haha.

Anyway, I just picked up a low mile CPO B8.5 Allroad Premium Plus, black on black. Took a little convincing from the wife, but she allowed me to trade in the Grand Cherokee Summit - thank goodness. Tint appointment set and plate-less grill, full interior/exterior LEDs, puddle lights, and more already on the way.

    Cheers!

Aside from the height in the rear they've been great. A few weeks after the install the rear settled at 26.5" and I lowered the front to match. It seems the rear has sagged a little bit more. I'm at 26.5" front / 26.375" rear (255/35/20 tires for reference). The rear is maxed at the highest position and the front has plenty of room to go either way. The settings with the standard module are just comfort and sport. I upgraded to the iRC module which adds auto (honestly haven't even calibrated it yet). All auto does is switch between sport and comfort based on suspension loads. You can adjust the point at which is switches, but you can't adjust the dampening aside from switching between sport/comfort/auto. KW has a similar coilover with electronic dampening with more adjustability (for double the price). I haven't done the calibration for the auto mode because I leave it in sport 95% of the time. Comfort is a bit too soft any maybe even a little bouncy. On super rough roads it's nice to have the option.

I do rub every once in a while in sport mode on really bad dips in the road and a little more frequently in comfort. It's pretty minimal, but I hope the KW spring spacers fit and I can raise the car .5" or so to alleviate the rubbing. Since I know it's just rubbing on the inside of the plastic fenders it doesn't really bother me. With painted metal fenders it would be a much bigger concern. I'm not aware of a coilover that doesn't sit low in the rear at max height. I do know for a fact the KW spring spacer will work with both the H&R and KW coilovers. Once it warms up a little I will confirm they will for the Bilstein too.

Had a bit of a scare last night and found myself in the ER for a few hours. Heart decided I was running a marathon while sitting stationary at my desk at work. No explanation, but everything returned to mostly normal after quite a while. When I got home late the puddle light parts were waiting for me. The parts added up to roughly $270 new and just before I pulled the trigger I decided to check eBay on a whim. $95 for a used set shown to be working. No broken tabs or anything. Because they sit under the mirrors any scratches wouldn't be visible. They arrived in pretty good shape. Worth the gamble! They may or may not go in this weekend. It's in the 20's today and I should probably take it easy. What happened to spring?

I didn't get out to the garage today, but I can write up what I know. Someone posted this link in the "What did you do to your B8 today?" thread: https://www.motor-talk.de/blogs/das-...-t2735640.html I honestly don't remember who is was and can't find the post, but he used aftermarket LEDs and just used the guide for wiring.

    Parts needed:
    Left mirror trim - 4F0 858 523 B 01C
    Right mirror trim - 4F0 858 524 B 01C
    Left light - 4F0 949 133
    Right light - 4F0 949 134
Connector for the light - 823 971 988 (2 total, one for each side)
    Repair wire for light connector - 000 979 103 (2 wires for a total of 4 pins)
    Repair wire for mirror connector - 000 979 009 (1 wire for a total of 2 pins)

Essentially the door panel needs to come out to remove the mirror and for the wiring. This guide will help you get the door panel off: http://www.audienthusiasts.com/Project_Alarm.html. I used this guide for disassembling the mirrors when I swapped caps: http://www.audienthusiasts.com/Proje...gMirrors2.html. The trim on the bottom of the mirror will be replaced with the new one that has the light in it.

For the wiring, the light connector has 2 pins. The vertical pin is power and goes to pin 1 on the mirror connector switch. The horizontal pin is ground and can be grounded anywhere.

There is VCDS coding required. In modules 42 and 52 (driver and passenger door modules) go to long coding. Bite 1, Bit 0, change this value from 0 to 1 in each module.

That should be it. I will come back and edit this as I do it and take pictures.

The puddle lights were a bust. The eBay seller listed the part number incorrectly and the trim is for an 05-08 A6 rather than 09-11 which is what was needed. He had pictures of the actual part, but it looked similar enough at a glance. I relied on the part numbers he listed which don't match what is on the part...

Unfortunately I didn't discover this until I had one mirror fully apart. I can still use the lights and just order the new trim pieces, but am tempted to return the eBay parts and order all new if I will be waiting for parts to arrive anyways.

I did find this which is a much easier to follow guide. If you have Google Chrome it will translate the page: https://a4-klub.pl/topic/170683-mont...erek-bocznych/

Just read through the thread, I remember seeing your jetta on Vortex back in the day and really admired it, loving your Allroad now as well!

How sensitive is the interior motion alarm? My old B5 A4 had that, and if I left the windows down a gust of wind would set the alarm off quite easily haha

I don't have a build thread so here are a couple pics from the install. The hardest part by far was getting the wires through the mirror assembly. It's tight with the blinker and side assist wires in there.

It's clear the mirror frame was made for these lights. There is a notch on the bottom to make room for the LED.

    Hope you're feeling better!

Thanks! After Photobucket screwed everything up I've had absolutely no motivation to rework the build thread and keep it up to date. The Jetta is still around and a continuous project.

I can't really speak to the sensitivity of the interior monitoring. I never park with the windows down unless it's in the garage. I did it mainly in case someone broke a window it would set the alarm off when they reached in. I do believe the sensitivity can be adjusted with VCDS.

Doing ok. Off and on haven't felt well for a few years, but just got some delayed test results back that may hopefully explain some things. Getting "old" sucks.

Friday I stopped at the shop that installed the coilovers to talk to them about installing spring spacers for the rear. They took a few measurements with everything on the car and compared them to the KW spacers I had already purchased (not installed). It looks promising enough to the point that they are willing to give installing them a shot. They ordered and will also be installing Hotchkis sway bars front and rear at the same time. Install next Wednesday.

Cleaned up the car over the weekend. Wash/clay/thorough interior cleaning. Dropped off the car today to remove some hard water spots on the hood, then ceramic coating! The prep on their end is very thorough. I didn't actually need to clay it ahead of time or even wash it, but feel better giving them a car that was in the best shape possible to make their jobs a little easier. Tentatively will get the car back Wednesday or Thursday. No sense in taking pictures as the car should look quite a bit better when I get it back! It's also still on winter tires as my dad borrowed my summer wheels while his are being refinished.

Puddle light parts arrived too. I'm hoping to give them another shot this weekend.

I did a terrible job taking pictures after the paint correction and ceramic coating, but it turned out flawless. The attention to detail in the prep phase was incredible. The metal door blades and front/rear "skidplates" had a number of specs that I could never get out. A clay bar pulled out the iron, but left behind spots. They look brand new (iron decontamination, then M105 with a 3" polishing pad). Even the exhaust tips were spotless. It made me realize how much chrome has corroded off them and how badly they need to be replaced. Of course it rained the day after picking it up.

KW spring spacers and Hotchkis sway bars are going in now. After they got the collar off they showed me the fitment of the KW spacer on the Bilstein collar. The spacer is every so slightly loose on the Bilstein collar and the rubber/silicone washer that typically sits on the collar is a tight fit on the spacer, but no issues.

Hoping to pick up my dad's wheels this weekend so I can get the RS5 rotors back on the car. Plan on tackling the puddle lights too.

    Freshly detailed pictures:

    Few updates:

Rear spring spacers are in! I waited until I swapped the summer wheels on to take the picture, so they're already a bit dirty. Spacers are 30mm (1.18"). Ended up "lowering" the car after the spacers went in for a net gain of .5" in height. Now at 26.75" all the way around. Sway bars are in too. Holy cow. I underestimated their impact. Even with the snow tires still on there was a drastic improvement in cornering. The car feels a little less pig-like and a quite a bit more confident on harder corners.

I tackled the puddle lights over the weekend. By far the most challenging part was fishing the wires from the mirror to the inside of the car. The mirror absolutely needs to come off the car to get the wire through.

Starting on the mirror side you can see the white connector for the puddle light tucked away in the bottom right. The two black wires are new and follow the existing harness:

I don't really have any tips for getting the wires through the top of the mirror and to this point. It was a pain in the ass. Getting it through this grommet wasn't too bad, then I cut a slit once on the interior side to fish it through the sleeving. After the pictures it was sealed with liquid electrical tape:

Per the wiring instructions a few posts up, The "vertical" pin on the white connector goes to pin 1 on the mirror connector. I crimped a pin onto the wire instead us using a repair wire and soldering the extension on. The "horizontal" pin on the white connector goes to any ground. Per the wiring diagram from Audi it gets spliced into black wire with blue stripe at pin 3:

VCDS coding required to enable the lights (see above). Note: the lights won't come on during the day. They are tied to the light sensor and come on with the coming home/leaving home lights. The pictures appear to show "hot spots" on the ground. It's a bit more natural looking in person:

After the puddle lights the RS5 rotors went back on the car for summer. Even though it may not have been necessary, I trimmed the inner lip on the plastic fenders a bit (it was pretty obvious where it was rubbing).

Finally, gave the car its first wash after the ceramic coating. In the past I've had the luxury of using a spot in an underground parking garage with excellent water pressure. Shaded during summer, heated in winter... life was great. Water pressure at home is dreadful... did the right thing and picked up an electric pressure washer along with a cheap foam cannon. First impressions on the setup are really good. Washing the car was quite a bit easier/faster. First impressions on the coating... not super impressed with the hydrophobic properties. All that said, washing in direct sunlight (bad, I know) caused some spots to dry and the water marks wiped right off which has never happened before. Our water is very hard. Without the coating the car would have required polish to remove the spots.

    Obligatory foam cannon picture:

All clean, wheels on, slightly higher ride height:

Getting closer to the FIS Control MMI release! Hoping it will be possible to change the boost pressure to PSI from kPa at some point. It is a setting they enabled on their module for my MK4 in a firmware update after purchase.

This is one of those stupid little things that no one but me will ever notice. Shortly after picking up the car I purchased a slim plate frame from the dealer with the Audi rings logo on the bottom. Iv'e had the Volkswagen variant on my Jetta for years and also on my Touareg for two years with no issues. For whatever reason, the polished finish on the Audi frame has oxidized/corroded like crazy after only one winter. Last summer I repolished the frame but it looks awful after another winter:

So, not wanting to get another one to have the same thing happen again, I started looking for other options. Honestly, I wasn't a big fan of the polished frame on the Allroad since there isn't any other polished metal or chrome on the car like the other two I used this frame on. Through a stroke of dumb luck, I stumbled onto this plate frame on Etsy. It's anodized aluminum. The finish matches the rest of the metal accents on the Allroad nearly perfectly. I did like the ability to hide the screws with the Audi frame, but the countersunk holes have a clean look too. The stainless screws were from the local hardware store. I've ordered some with a Torx head (why not?) in stainless and without any lettering on the head which will be here by the end of June according to Amazon:

So there you have it. A post about a license plate frame. Does it get any more exciting than this?

Other than the FIS-Control MMI and a few shows this summer, I wouldn't expect anything special in this thread for the rest of the year. The car is pretty much where I'd like it to be aside from brakes and the off chance I find a clean RS4 interior. The Jetta has tapped me out for the rest of the year redoing the interior, so those last two items will have to wait a while.

Over the weekend a set of the forged RS7 wheels popped up somewhat locally. They looked pretty much perfect and seemed to be at a price too good to be true. TroySico had a set on his Allroad a while back and they looked great. On 3 hours of sleep I hauled ass down to Chicago this morning and back. I'm not entirely sure how they will be used yet as I love both the RS5 Rotors for summer and the Peelers for winter. My brother jokingly suggested putting all season tires on the Rotors for early spring/late fall, then using these for summer. It's not a terrible idea... My concern with these in spring is residual road salt getting under the clear and destroying the machined finish.

The tires on the wheels now are too big (275/35/20). They technically fit, but if I decide to keep these long term I will swap the summer tires from the Rotors over and space them out 10ish mm.

    ^ very nice!

I almost grabbed a set of these last summer, but I missed out on a killer deal that seemed to good to be true. I ended up being ok with it, since 20s would get destroyed in my area. I’m glad to see these on an allroad, they look great!

These wheels are growing on my very quickly. I don't know what it is about them, but they seem more "Allroady" and a little less sporty looking than the RS5 Rotors. Part of that might just be the larger tires (275/35/20 vs. 255/35/20). Fairly certain these are the new summer wheels. I'll give it a week or so before swapping the proper sized tires over, then start looking for all season tires for the Rotors.

The new wheels do look nice. When I first saw them this morning I thought eh but every time I've come through the thread they've grown on me. Tires causing rubbing issues?

EDIT: removed bad link from my quote

    Whoops. Fixed the original link.

Minimal rubbing issues. Only in the front on hard turns so far. They sit in a little bit further than the Rotors.

So you’re saying you might need to get rid of a set of wheels....wink wink. Btw I do like the new ones...do you feel the ride is different with the extra meat?

No no no. RS7 wheels for 4 months in the summer, Peelers for 4 months in the winter, then the RS5 wheels for the transitional months. 2 in the spring and 2 in the fall. #allwheelsmatter

Turning into a corner feels a little mushier maybe due to the taller sidewall and steering takes a little more effort probably due to the wider tires. I haven't noticed any extra comfort from the taller sidewall.

The plan is to swap the 255/35/20 tires from the rotors over and sell these tires for anything I can get while there is still a little bit of life left in them. Then I can get 8 or 10ish mm spacers so they sit where the Rotors do.

Drove a bit to get to the next closest dealer to me. Setup my 45k service for next Thursday and discussed the modem upgrade for the MMI system (updated TSB 2039476/9).

Apparently on 11/6/17 Audi updated the TSB to remove the original owner with an active subscription requirement, meaning this upgrade that I attempted to get through the dealer immediately after getting the car (~January 2017) would have been covered under warranty. My closest dealer was unwilling to perform the upgrade at that time even if I paid for the part and labor. My resentment towards Audi is palpable...

I now have the upgraded modem in hand from an MMI unit purchased off eBay. My hope was that I would install the modem and just have the dealer do the software part of the upgrade. They won't do the software upgrade unless they install the modem too which sucks from a labor standpoint, but at least it's finally a solution.

I'm a little grumpy that my dealer didn't note the update in the TSB and not charge me the labor for the firmware/driver update. At least they did it without requiring they do the hardware install as well. Guessing your dealer wants to ensure end to end success?

    Glad you like it!

45k service done yesterday. The dealer did not install the updated modem or perform the software update. They needed an active SIM card to perform the update despite the TSB stating the SIM is only required for testing after the update. I have a FreedomPop SIM card on the way, but don't think it can be activated/setup without the modem in the car. I'll try, but pretty sure it won't work with the current modem in the car either for testing purposes. This has been such a frustrating experience.

Also, this forum is a terrible influence. Purchased a Thule Motion XT Alpine box which should be here next Wednesday. I'm having the interior of my Jetta redone and had to rent a van to get everything up to Minneapolis (headliner was 3" wider than the back of the Allroad), then rented another van to get the headliner back home. I'll be camping next weekend more than halfway to Minneapolis and the rest should be ready to pick up. The box is hardly more than the cost of 4 day van rental and should give me plenty of room for camping gear plus the rest of the interior (front/rear seats and door cards).
