New A5 owner- worried about tensioner and oil consumption

    Hey guys-

I'm planning on getting a 2011 A5 2.0t 6MT with 87k miles on it next week. However all the reading online of the tensioner failing and oil consumption are leading me to believe I am walking into a money pit.

The car was well maintained with regular oil changes, and to my knowledge it hasn't had the updated tensioner installed. The current owner indicates that it never needs oil and the chain has never rattled.

Am I doomed with this car? Should I replace the tensioner immediately once I get it back to my garage? I'm making a 400 mile drive to bring it back home so that is also somewhat worrisome.

Or have I read too many failure reports and thinking the worst is imminent?

I traded my A5 in as it consumed 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles which is within the acceptable range from Audi, originally only burned 1 quart every 2500 miles but got worse over the years. I think it's below 1k miles and they will rebuild the motor. Tough call on believing the owner if he says it never burns oil.

If there's no rattle then I would'nt worry for now. But you should get it done sooner rather than later. People have gone well over 100k without issues. If you're not burning oil then you won't. Past that, the b8's have so far been pretty reliable.

Hi. I have been reading up about the tensioner issue for a while as I have the 2.0 tfsi A5 2010 model. It seems the tensioner from 2008-2012 is a weak part and could fail without any notice and due to the amount of failures Audi revised this part several times. It's really down to personal choice and risk if you decide to leave this, personally I am changing it as I plan to keep this car for a while and the cost of a new/re-con engine is big money!
