    I hate my windscreen

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey...anybody here hate the state of their windscreen?

I purchased my RS5 about 16 months ago (Its a '13) from CA, but it had previously started life in FL...now she lives here in MA. I have just broken through the 40k miles mark but the windscreen looks like its done 200k!!

I guess the elements are the primary reason that glass windscreens deteriorate but despite trying a few recommended treatments looking through my 'clean' windscreen is painful. I have used claybar, sealed it, cleaned it blah blah...it looks like the glass itself is littered with imperfections...anyone here ever had reason to change out, or had/have issues like me.

I will try to capture an image and see if that shows the extend of my issues, but I am guessing its something you need to see IRL.

Any thoughts of ideas very welcome

I live in Colorado, so it's actually kind of rare to have a windshield last long enough to need to replace it from pitting VS. just having it outright crack. My STI was the only car I ever owned here where the windshield was at a perfect angle to avoid cracking, but it did get pitted. I ended up replacing the windshield every 2-3 years due to the pitting. On my Evo, we go through 1-2 windshields a year, and the Tacoma is no different. My S5 windshield got obliterated with pits the first winter I drove it.

    mind is the same
bought the car used with 67,000 miles
and I can tell it was mostly used on highway due to the many chips on the good, and the state of the windshield
I know there is a compound that can polish glass
    but its radioactive :)
    cerium oxide

Ah so the symptom I suffer from is 'pitting' and sounds like it could be common given age. climate etc...sounds like its replacement for me! I love Colorado but hold crap that's a lot of glass issues there! Thanks for your advice.

I'm pretty sure anyone here that owns an Evo is a favorite client to the local glass shops. I've never owned another car that needed so many windshields. We've owed it for 10 years, 125k miles, and we've probably replaced the windshield 12 or 13 times. At least they're cheap though. $140 is the most I've ever paid.

I live in Boston and by the time my car hit 100k, it was obscene and nearly impossible to see through when the sun was in front of the car.

One day when I was working on the car it was accidentally hit with a tool which caused a rather large crack. No idea how that happened. Anyways, insurance replaced it as they have to in MA.

It was incredibly dangerous to drive while pitted -- the replacement made a night and day difference.
I'm living for the day I can park something Italian inside of my house.

I'm thinking of replacing mine on my rs5 after 28k miles. I found out that xpel makes a protective film for windshields so I'll probably have that installed after

I hear you...but is the cost of xpel justifiable? I have scheduled a replacement via insurance tomorrow and even if there was a deductible I am sure it would be more cost effective to replace via insurance? I sat in a new S5 in the dealership the other day and the comparison was unbelievable- cannot understand why I am only doing something about it now- Fall/Winter sun maybe prompted.

Ah ha, I heard about those type of accidents...I called my company a short while ago, and appointment scheduled for tomorrow, and best part is living in MA means zero deductible (so there are some benefits with living in the commonwealth ha ha!). It's not OEM but OW grade and is warranted. If I experience any problems I might just have to come by yours and see I can borrow that 'tool' of yours!

Thanks all for your comments- I searched the forums deeper and there are many threads on this very subject...love AZ!

You should be careful with which windshield they replace it with. OEM glass has acoustic properties to reduce noise.

I believe there's fitment issues, too, if your vehicle is rain sensor equipped.

Yep, do not let them replace the RS5 windshield with supposedly "like" aftermarket glass. There is no "like" aftermarket glass for the RS5. I just got mine replaced for the second time and insurance confirmed that there is still no aftermarket glass for the RS5. The OEM glass is acoustic glass and with the combination of the rain sensor and the tinting at the top there is no equivalent glass other than OEM. If they don't put in the OEM glass, you'll end up with an inferior windshield.

You can see the acoustic label on the logo.
