Radar detectors and the new braking systems/ adaptive crruise control in newer cars

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Im considering getting a V1 radar detector for my S5 ..

my concern is that all these newer cars coming on the road with "brake assist" or Adaptive Cruise Control would make a radar detector useless. ie .false alarms

Anybody have any more practical knowledge, ? Do the new cars that uses these technologies use the Ka or X bands or what the story..

I've noticed that it tends to be Acuras and GM vehicles (namely, Cadillacs) that trip mine (9500ix), it's K band, and it's annoying as hell. Audi, BMW, MB, and all the others don't seem to be an issue. They're obviously using some sort of different technology.

False alarms are set because of the modules installed in different vehicles that assist with lane change, brake assist, adaptive cruise.Hell even a wifi network could give you false warnings. This is because radar detectors mostly look for interference to give you warnings. From what I know the new q7 emits alot of interference. and cadillacs are notorious for it as well.

I don't use my radar detector much anymore, because the CHP has mostly switched to lidar, but when I do, I don't have any issues. I have the X band disabled as that triggers most false alarms.

I'm in Nor Ca tool , and with respect to lidar.. Yes CHP will park and beam cars on a good approach , but I still think the other methods are more used ( esp considering city and county law enforcement ) my concern was all the new cars emmitting signals the rd will false detect on

The cruise control systems definitely don't make radar detectors useless. My V1s don't give too much trouble in this regard.

Most of the systems utilize K band.

I use a wireless escort mostly as a piece of mind when I'm out in the canyons, where it's unlikely that the cops are sitting on the side of the road with a lidar or on rural highways on a road trip. Most of the time I have it put away in the glove compartment. I've developed a keen sense over the years for where and when I can push it and I'm very good at spotting the various police cruisers. It's really mostly about situational awareness. Sure, I have been caught occasionally, but I've only had one speeding ticket actually make it on my record and it's off the record in the meantime. It was with a lidar and I was going too fast to be eligible for traffic school. Pretty much all other times, I've either gotten out of it by contesting in writing (2/3 of cops in CA don't respond to a written contest, so you have a 2/3 chance to get the ticket dismissed) or I just took online traffic school, which takes about an hour to answer all the questions, it's quite a joke.

But as I've said, I've never had an issue with other cars setting of the escort. Most false alarms are actually from some of the LED taillights setting of the laser detector on it.

@superswiss.. Yes I see your point .. A lidar hit and you are cooked.. there are jammers , but I agree that 2/3 of officers may not show up .. At the same time I don't have time to go goofing off at the courthouse either .. I just prefer to avoid the electronic snooping as to my speed in the first place.. My feeling if the cops are beaming a radar signal at me .. I want to know.

No need to go to court. You write a BS letter and mail it in. A month later 2 out of 3 times you'll get a dismissal in the mail. If it's not dismissed, then you just opt for traffic school. I got this advise from lawyer a long time ago.

I still use my Radar detector, only once did I get a Ka from a Chrysler or Dodge minivan, otherwise it's usually K bands from other cars. Doesn't bother me much because my detector has auto mute meaning it will drop the volume after a few seconds. Up here in the Northeast, many of the highway State Troopers drive with their radar on so I'm able to pick them up. I was cruising at 100mph on the NJ turnpike when I started picking up a Ka band. This went on for several miles but I kept at a steady 70 mph and a few minutes later a trooper flew by me. I use WAZE also but no one reports a cop that is cruising the highway, so you're SOL if you don't have another way of picking them up.
Good thing about here also is that many people use the WAZE app so that also helps with cops in the city who use LIDAR. Combined, I think I'm covered for the most part but I'm still thinking about a laser jammer because knowing my luck I'll get hit with LIDAR.
BTW I use the Passport max 2 and Max 360.

I use an Escort Passport Max. Love the thing. Has paid for itself 1000 times.

I have noticed a little interference from newer cars with lane assist, ACC and such, but those signals are usually super weak and fade quickly. I would say I have to be within 40ft of those cars for it to trip my detector. Almost always a K-band pop.

The Passport Max and 9500ix (had that before) pick up actual threats so far away I feel I'd have to be just plain dumb or ignorant to get caught with it. I'm talking more than 30sec away at highway speeds. The GPS memory for false alarms is a wonderful feature too. I truly could not recommend Escort's higher end products enough.

Laser is another animal. If your hearing the laser chime you're already cooked. Don't have too much of that in Colorado though. Mainly KA on the highways and nicer parts of town, K in the older suburbs.

I tolerate the occasional alerts generated by driver aids on other cars due to the incredible protection it offers me from tickets and such.

You're so much better off using the radar detector forums as their wealth of info is huge. but anyways.

KA band, which was always clear and only used by LEOs is now being used by side assist and radar cruise/breaking. So now more falses on the highway from Cadillacs, etc. Get's annoying for me too and I have the Passport Max which has the GPS lockout, but obviously it still falses on the highway. I heard the new Escort 360 works a bit better to filter them out but it isn't foolproof.

The Valentine will have issues with blind assist u have to de activate one of the radar settings which is explained as being the "pop" portion of the alarm sequence and doesn't " really" impact u. If turning a radar protection off sounds like it's being enhanced wanna buy a VW diesel? :) anyway I prefer a Valentine and run it as preferred unit for the rs5 Passport 9500 whatever was out n Feb.13 when car showed up and Valentine squawked non stop ( sensing rear signal from blind side assist)
Go with passport better than nothing good news is most States at least Illinois,Texas speed limits seem suggested only most drivers rounding up 15 mph.

    +1

Got stuck behind an Acura MDX couple of days ago and I thought the RD was going to melt down right there. Annoying yes. Renders it useless, no.
