Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright, I've determined that there's a good chance my head gasket has gone out. I've been searching and searching for a head gasket DIY with no solid results I've found a lot of this and that such as turbo install, intake cleaning, timing chain tensioner replacement, etc... just no actual head gasket procedure.

My question, am I missing something here!? Do any of you know of a head gasket DIY out there?

Second question: I have purchased most of what I need, what else am I missing?

I, too, need this DIY. I want to do my chain tensioner but want to pull the head so I can replace a lot more while I'm at it.

Please do a step by step. While you're back there good idea to replace the $20 plastic POS coolant flange while its out in the open. Otherwise if and when that goes out--youre dunzo---very tough job to do back in that hole of an engine bay.
    Good luck amigo!

Remove the turbo and intake manifold using existing DIYs. Remove the timing belt. Remove the valve cover. Disconnect all wiring to the head and the hoses to the flange. Unbolt the head bolts and lift off the head. Clean head and block. Check head for flatness with a straight edge and feeler gauges, deck head if necessary. Reinstall in reverse order using new gaskets and head bolts.

I figure you're the guy to ask because you've done a bunch of head work... Do you use any kind of silicone sealant for the head gasket? Or does it not need any? And when you clean the crap off the head and block do you just use a plastic scraper? Or do you use a fine sandpaper or solvent?

And @Beastopher (someone correct me if I'm wrong), I don't think you need all those exhaust and manifold bolts and studs unless you strip or break any of them. At least I'm reusing all of them on my buddy's 2.7... And then you can use the money you save for a genuine Audi cam follower!

Acetone and a razor blade if needed or a roloc bristle wheel on a die grinder to clean the surfaces. I didn't use any type of sealant on the head gasket and in the 4 times I've done it I haven't had an issue. I have used Elring head gaskets each time ($30 or so from ECS).

I absolutely understand this, I had just hoped all of those individual DIY's had been compiled 😁

Not that I'm aware of. I used separate DIYs for each section the first time I did it.

Got it all back together, Sorry for anyone who was waiting for a DIY.. I got far too frustrated, and impatient to be able to effectively write a decent DIY.

Still seems to be leaking oil from the head/block interface.. I don't understand how this is freaking possible.
