    2001 S4 - Cluster badge location?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Where should the S4 logo be in the cluster of a 2001 S4? The logo in my 2001 is on the right under the speedo. Most of the 2001's I've seen have the logo under the left under the tach.

I acquired the car recently with little service history, I suspect the odometer has been rolled back at some point - possible cluster swap?

2001 would most likely have the new S4 badge under the tach, while 2000 had the old style badge under the speedo.

Isn't the badge differentiation and location part of the facelift upgrade? 01 being under the speedo and 01.5 under the tach?

Does the car have the old style trunk badge?

He's trying to find out if the cluster has been swapped and it is very hard to tell. All goes back to where he got it, the mileage on the title etc. and with so many clusters for sale. I've bought one with a new display with 250K and trying to find someone to reset it to match with my original one 110K. This is like opening a can of worms, engine, turbo, timing belt, water pump.

I can reset the mileage if you need it to match your 110k.

The mileage is so easy to alter, even if it was rolled back it wouldn't surprise me if it was the stock cluster

It's got the old style badge in the cluster and on the trunk. The VIN comes up 2001, the manual in the glovebox is 2001.

It's definitely got a bit of a storied history it seems. At one point on the MTO history (DMV equivalent in Ontario, Canada) showed it was reported as 198,000km - in 2011. The guy I got it from claimed he hasn't driven it in a few years, and looking at the brakes I would agree with that. I got the car with 195,500km this month. The MTO did tell me that it's very common for mistakes to happen in reporting.. however there was an oil change sticker in the glass from "Total" that read "next service 224,000" - So unless total is recommending 30,000km oil change intervals... I'm guessing it was rolled back. Carproof (basically just a canadian carfax) didn't really show much, 3 minor accidents early in its life.

Would be cool to know how far it was rolled back. I really don't care - I got the car cheap, and the interior is in oddly great condition. Having seen some 200-250,000km cars , I would say this interior looks more like sub 200k car. Had all the common problems when I got it, oil leaks, ripped throttle boot, old diverters. Replaced and fixed most of that and it runs great.

From what I have read, the 2001 can come with old style badge trunk or hood. I haven't heard of old style on the cluster, but I'm sure it's also possible. I just recently bought a 2001. It has a new style trunk and cluster badge, but old style hood grill. Which is common.

The MTO does commonly have small errors because you just go in and tell them your mileage, no one actually checks it. I got a carproof for my car too, and other cars in the past and it has been really good at picking up accidents and roll backs.

The thing that makes me think you may have a car with a rolled back odometer is your oil change sticker...that being said, If someone knew enough to roll back the km. I'd hope they weren't stupid enough to leave the oil change sticker.

The owner did seem to be an idiot, though. Another oddity about this car - it was sold with only one key, and its a generic audi key without a FOB. The key matches the drivers door and the ignition, but doesn't work in the glovebox or the trunk. VIN comes back clean so it wasn't stolen... but still odd, re-keyed... but why.

Sounds like you have a Valet key (looks like a normal key, no fob).

Really though I can't see how you can complain... You bought the car.

Yep, valet key. For what it's worth, I bought my car with only a valet key, only takes .5 seconds to stick it in the door and lock it.

I'm not complaining. It's an observation.

It's an 01.0, not a .5. Valet key.. that makes sense. Does anyone know if Audi can recut original keys without the original?

Yes, they order keys based on VIN only. They do not re-cut from an existing key.
