    Cracked Windshield - Safelite?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Walked out into the garage this morning to find a 10" crack in my windshield.

Anyone have experience with Safelite? I know that you can specify OEM glass but I want to make sure that the result is perfect.

    Thanks

Most people that I know have had very positive experiences with Satellite. Nothing that stands out that they aren't great. I would use OEM glass like you said. I also would trust them more than a dealer or anyone else, because all they do is install windshields.

Make sure to check your windshield, as most of ours are acoustic and I've heard of people getting different types.

This, I used Safelite and would not hesitate to use them again, they did a great job. On advise from others on this forum, I specifically asked for OEM acoustic, and they said it would take a couple days, or I could use the house brand and it was in stock. Of course I said order the OEM, and it came in the next day, an exact replacement for factory glass.

I just had them replace the glass in my FL s5 last week.. It was kindof a PITA TBT.. Nothing against safelite nor their tech.. When the guy arrived Monday he pulled the broken screen off and as he was placing in the new one I noticed it was chipped.. Things happen might have chipped in transit. How ever he probabyl should have examined it before he pulled the orriginal glass off..

How ever it turns out that the aftermarket glass they brought was thicker, and also would not work with the rain sensor or able to put on the rear view mirror. They ended up coming back Thursday and putting in oem glass by the same guy Monday. It went in perfectly and is great.. Since they sortof screwed up I got the oem glass at AF price..

So with that make sure they do OEM glass as the AF stuff is too thick doesn't look right and wont work with the rain sensor or rear view mirror.

Safelite replaced my glass. Had to request OEM glass and my insurance covered it all.

Guy replaced my glass in my parking lot at work. Took him about an hour. Very professional installation - no issues at all.

Generally an insurance company will not give you OEM glass if the car is older than 2 years old. If you want OEM you need to go through the dealer, which doesn't take insurance for windshields, then hope your insurance company will reimburse; which once again they won't because they aren't going to pay the crazy cost of $700-800 for a windshield. Going through safelite or any other place you shouldn't have any issue! I swapped out my A8 W12 the same way, and not one single difference besides not dealing with a headache going through dealers and insurance, and also no more cracked windshield. Mind you when that happened I didn't pay a dime out of pocket. The glass shop waives your cost and just bills the insurance. which also doesn't go up.

Be sure and take a picture of the Stamp/symbols on the corner as I believe one of those actually designate Acoustic glass. There should be no reason for them to replace your glass with one that doesn't have the same specs. The stamps/symbols should match up.

I personally didn't have a good experience with safelite when I had the glass replaced on my A4.
First time they came out they brought the wrong glass. Second time I wasn't able to be present (I stopped being particular about the car because it was on its way out).

When I saw the job, the first thing I noticed was they had been all over the paint. It was painful seeing my really well maintained brilliant black trashed (well maybe I'm exaggerating, but they were all over it).
Second, I noticed the the gap between the top of the glass and the roof was larger.
Finally, I immediately noticed the lower optical quality of the glass when I first drove the car afterwards (they used pilkington glass) - the worst was looking out of it at and angle. Also the dot matrix looked a lot worse than the OEM glass.

So I guess it depends. Be sure to watch them replace the glass and know what you're getting.

    Cracked Windshield - Safelite?

Thanks for the heads up. Have an appointment Wednesday since the have to order the OEM glass. ($700). I'm going to watch them given NPuter's experience.
Crack has no "spidering" so I assume that I'm ok driving it until then?

On a side note...anyone know a good way to exercise evil spirits? 13 month old car and so far rear ended by a guy with no insurance, nailed by a shopping cart that somehow achieved Mach 1, and now a windshield that cracked while sitting in the garage.

Just got my windshield done by them last month and the actual work was good. Only problem I had was with their online system that rescheduled me at a different location when I had only changed the date and time of my existing appointment.

That's not true and may depend on your state. With the rain sensor, the glass is a dealer part and no matter how old the car is the insurance covers it. At least the amount beyond your deductible. Here in CA, glass replacement falls under comprehensive and I have never had any issues getting OEM glass. I needed a new windshield on my former S4 when it was about 6 years old. Insurance covered the OEM glass no problem. Of course I had to pay my deductible either way.

    DO NOT go with Safelite.

I had a horrendous experience with them.

IF you decide to go with them due to insurance matters, make sure they get a factory OEM glass for you -- not one in their stock that will simply "fit" your vehicle.

In addition to them screwing up the glass placement on their cheap glass they tried to put on, once I had them remove it, order an OEM Audi glass part, they tore the fabric on the inside of my interior in their attempt to install the glass.

Never again. But, like many others have said, getting OEM is key.
