PLAYRZ RS5 Build & Photo thread

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
As usual, thought it'd be best to start a build/photo thread to keep everything in the one place.

    B8.5 RS5 in Daytona Grey
Purchased with the following options -
    • Lunar silver interior
    • Sports suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC)
    • Sports exhaust with black tailpipe trims
    • 20" alloy in 5-arm rotor design titanium look

    Windows tinted -

Few goodies showed up last week and got around to fitting them.

    • KW H.A.S springs
    • SPC upper control arms
    • ECS brake lines
    • K&N High Flow air filers

A huge thank you to @JamesRS5 for the guide on installing the KW HAS with DRC suspension. It was invaluable. For anyone attempting the KW spring install on a DRC car for the first time, your feelings of anger, defeat and despair are normal, it is a bitch. Once we completed the first front shock (many hours), the rest was comparatively easy. You quickly learn what works and what doesn't and to do it again would be much simpler, although I pray I never need to.

    Initial drop

I decided to set the initial heights to 625mm all round as above. This was done with the assumption that the springs will drop slightly as they settle and the car still needs to be aligned (booked in for Monday). Add to that the wheels will soon be replaced, the heights will inevitably need to be tweaked before the final heights are decided.

A few comparison shots taken this morning

    Few other mods currently planned

Capristo exhaust (delivery expected next week)

Full matte warp in Matte Charcoal Metallic. I had initially planned to have the car wrapped in Xpel stealth or similar matte protective film but after pricing the materials, it was close to triple the cost, think $40-50 per lm for matte wrap (dry) vs $120-150 per lm for protective film (wet). Ultimately it is still going to help protect the car along with a more unique look without spending $4-5K. As a side note, I didn't realise the factory Daytona Grey had so much blue/green in it!

    Wheels have also been ordered.
Opted to go with a set BC Forged HCS02S in a 20x10 +25 all round. Medium concave front and deep concave rear. Finish will be brushed black tint lip, face and barrel with exposed stainless hardware.

Should look a little something like this

Amazing how much of a difference just a simple drop makes to the look of these cars. How are you finding the ride on the KW's?

The color you've chosen for the wrap is going to look great, are you tempted to go black on the window trim and front grille to tie it all together?

Agreed, a drop in ride height definitely makes these car look much better. I've only driven the car approx 15km since installing the springs (waiting for alignment on Monday) but initial impressions are really good. With the suspension in comfort mode, it seems as good if not better than factory. Keen to get some km's in after the alignment to get a better feel for it in different settings/conditions.

One thing I did notice, which was strange to me, is the rear springs are fully compressed in the center with the weight of the car on them. The coils above and below aren't, just the center section. I've not seen this before. I assume this is simply how KW have designed this progressive spring and maybe why this section also has the plastic sleeve?

I did look at black trims but I honestly prefer the brushed silver trims and grille. I'm hoping the silver hardware on the wheels will pick up the trims/grille and aesthetically work together.

That's right, they are a progressive rate spring and the centre section does sit coilbound but as you rightly said, that's why they have the noise insulating sleeves so you don't hear it clunking away when you go over a hump. These DRC springs differ from the standard HAS kit in that ours don't run with the helper spring, the softer rate helper is built into the spring.

Thanks for all the positive comments. Much appreciated.

After spending more and more time researching this whole vinyl wrap thing, I've decided to go with the 3M Scotchguard Pro PPF rather than a matte change using a standard film. Reason being is my main objective was to protect the front of the car from stone chips, scratches, etc. something that the standard dry wrap vinyl simply isn't going to do well enough. It may sacrifice itself to save the paint in some circumstances but would ultimately end up looking chipped and torn relatively quickly. Add to that this car is my daily drive, it's simply not practical to maintain the matte vinyl finish to a standard I'd be happy with (regardless of some reports I've read, IMO a matte finish is more work to maintain).

As the car is fitted with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) I didn't want to lose that functionally. More info on DRC - HERE

Using the KW H.A.S kit specifically designed for DRC cars, you can maintain the DRC damping settings while being able to adjust ride height.

I have Expel on my whole front nose, headlights, front quarter panels, A-pillars, front roof and love it. It will protect the paint but will not protect from dents caused by larger/heavier pebbles. Make sure they use sheets of the material on the body panels instead of the pre-cut pieces.

@yjypm I don't find the ride on bumpy roads any worse than the factory setup, if anything it's probably a bit better (more controlled). With the 6-700km's I've done since installing the KW's it just feels like a better version on the factory springs. No complaints about them being too harsh in any conditions.

You have the springs on stock dampers right?
Have you ever found any unwanted bouncing?
Sounds pretty good, i really want to lower my car but I have a long bumpy road on my way work and I was almost thinking about going for pss10 to make the lady on the passenger seat complain less.
I'm still searching for other ways that cost less. Now based on your words it seems there's a viable solution.

Yes, using stock dampers. The car is fitted with DRC so the KW HAS kit was the best option to give me adjustable height while maintaining factory dampening control. So far I have nothing but praise for this type of spring kit.

The car was wrapped in 3M Scotchguard Pro PPF over the weekend. Had the front bumper, hood, lights and front guards done. The clarity of the film is exceptional and has a really nice gloss to it. After many, many, many hours here's the result.

Wheels will be next. They were ordered about 3 weeks ago so shouldn't be too far away. Now just need to decide on what tires to fit.

The license plate was mounted using a custom bracket made by an Australian company LAKIN. These are made as an exact fit for your car and plate combination. And when I say exact, even the curvature on the front grill is considered when they are made. Fantastic quality and perfect fit.

3 weeks. Only another 6 weeks to wait then.

I went 295 on my tires, no rubbing at all an I'm pretty low. I had to go Continental Sport Contact 6 as they were the only ones available in the 21" diameter but they have been a good tire so far.

I'm hoping they're only another 2-3 weeks away as build time was originally quoted as 4-6 weeks. That's a whole lot of rubber, I can only imagine you would be fairly limited in your choices in that size!

I'm currently tossing up between the Nitto INVO & Pirelli P Zero Nero GT in a 275/30/20. I've had really good experiences with the INVO's on previous cars so they're a safe bet for me. I'd like to give the Pirelli's a go, but have always found the P Zero to be too noisy, especially once they hit about half life. Not sure if the Nero GT's are the same. More research will be required.

If the INVO work for you and you've had good experience with them, then why not. There aren't many Australian guys on here to compare tires with on your roads with your conditions so go with what you know. I wanted to go with Michelin PSS after good experiences with them here on a previous car but they are like rocking horse shit, no one stocked them in a 21", I was almost tempted to bring a set back from the UK last time I was home and pay the excess baggage but then I read some good reviews on these Conti's and I'm liking them so far.

I also considered the PSS given the praise they're given but I can't justify the premium attached to them, especially given some of the other great options available for significantly less money.

Also got an email this afternoon. Hot of the press and ready to ship!! All going well I should have them delivered late next week. Great turn around time from BC Forged. Super excited to see these on the car.

Beautiful wheels. Had a set of 2pc BC wheels on a previous M3 and they were great. Light, strong and well priced.

This build is coming along very nice! The wheels will really set it off. PSS's are definitely worth it in a car like this, but someone else on the forum mentioned the newest edition of P-zero's were excellent as well. I don't track my RS but do some very spirited driving in NYC and then mountain runs when I travel down south. This is no go-cart, but the RS's crown diff and NA V8 really shines through curves and the right tire can make the difference between good performance and wow performance. BTW, love the interior, but I'm biased ;-)

Great feedback. Its the first set I've ordered from them so good to hear you were happy with the quality of yours.

Agreed, the RS5 certainly isn't the last word in handling but is definitely intoxicating to drive. The car is my daily drive and don't get too many opportunities for spirited drives through the twisties so my priority list when shopping for tires probably looks something like this - quietness, comfort, looks, price, wet performance, dry performance, longevity. In that order. This is almost the inverse of how I would pick a tire for many of my previous performance rear wheel drive cars, sacrificing almost everything over dry performance. The RS5 has so much mechanical grip, that for daily duties almost any offering from the major manufactures offers ample traction. For those tracking their cars or using them as a weekend toy this obviously wouldn't apply but for me as a daily driver my preferences are skewed toward comfort over performance.

    Lunar silver interiors FTW
