Oil consumption- should I even bother?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    I've had my car for 2 years, 30K miles. It's a 2005.5 with 130K

I've had high and remarkably consistent oil consumption through this period- a quart every 700 to 800 miles. I initially used Mobil 1 0w40 for about a year and now Rotella T6, no change. I replaced the PCV, no change. Replaced the VC gaskets, no change. No signs of significant leaks. Car idles great and drives great.

What could be the cause here- is this cylinder scoring that hasn't gotten worse? something else?

And more importantly, should I even bother doing anything about this?

I had some consumption with the Mobil 1 0w-40. not as bad as yours. I switched to Motul 5w-40 and the consumption has gone way down. It is a pretty expensive oil though.

I don't know why anyone uses M1 0w40 in an Audi after all of these years and miles of use saying it thins out to a 30 weight quickly.

Looks like it's time for a compression/leakdown test to confirm scored cylinders. Mine was idling and driving fine only noticed sluggishness at high rpms. My oil consumption was about the same and cylinder 7 was about 80% loss of compression!

I do because it is cheap af. I could add 4-5qts between changes if needed and still come out cheaper than using liquimoly or something without ANY consumption. Seeing as I have both consumption and a few small leaks... Mobil1 for me.

    5qts Mobil 1 = $22.50

So if I burn/lose up to 5 quarts between changes (9-10 qts) it cost me $22.50 x 3 or $67.50 for say 6-8k miles

    5qts liquimoly/amsoil/etc = $35 - $50 or more..... so even if I don't burn anything, its $70+ for that same interval...

Plus the only thing readily available in my area is Mobil1 or Rotella T6 (which isn't technically for our vehicles anyway)

I also switched from Rotella T6 to Amsoil and my consumption dropped from 2 quarts every 750 miles to about 2 quarts every 1,200.

I always buy my Mobil1 0W-40 at Massachusetts Walmart's for $26. Right now their website lists the price at a Massachusetts location at $22.88.

If your car is burning oil its time to switch to a high viscosity oil 10w-40 or the bmw m3-m5 type oil 10w-60 thats the reason bmw uses that oil to combat oil consumption on there cars ,i have a b7 s4 been running 10w-40 note i'm in florida where its hot tho i also added the bmw oil catch can system and boy i'm glad i did this, cause my car was burning oil at 1 qrt in a 100 miles ,now i have not burned any in over 3k mile now with this setup so far and my intake manifold runs a bit cooler than before, for some reason this is just by touch tho and my intake is clean along with my exhaust ,note the bmw oil catch can kit is a high flow sealed type system so your engine vacuum is not affected ,and when i say sealed i dont mean that the can cannot be pulled apart for checking or cleaning the price for the kit was $179 shipped made in the usa not the china made knock off ,but this setup is working for me ,try it if u like good luck.

not sure why every thing is repeated in all caps, but anyway... can you post a link to this oil catch system?

A mechanic i met at autozone who has a s4 b6 also told me to use rislone. He was burning oil like crazy but after using 2 bottles of rislone his consumption went down from 1qt 500 miles to 1qt 2k. I only used 1 bottle since i didn't want to overfill it. It did help with my oil consumption but not to the point of 2k. Next time i will try 2 bottles

Where did you buy this rislone stuff? Also, your running 10w-40? I'm in FL too and considering the high heat, I've considered going thicker but thought it could be bad for startup.

Rislone cost $8/bottle, 2 bottles cost equal +2 qt 5w40 oil (or even +3q when Castrol Edge on sales) already, is it better just keep adding engine oil, or min the oil burning will make engine more healthy?

Holy thread revival. So is this Rislone product put on into the engine like if you were adding oil?

Correct, just add like you would oil. It’s about the consistency of honey. I tried it when my A4 was consuming a quart every 300 miles but my piston rings were far too gone for it to really help.
