    Angry Car blew up

I was 10miles away from the route 50 bridge heading into Ocean City traveling at around 64mph and the car made a clunk sound and a boom and that was it and a cloud of smoke from under the hood. I just had the pistons and rings replaced about 400 miles ago under the oil consumption warranty and the timing chain with all components. The motor is locked up and I have all kinds of stuff flashing in the display but no CEL came on before this happend and I did have the cruise control set so I wasn't beating on the car at all. I called the tow truck and had it towed to the house and the rollback bed had all kinds of oil on it so I am thinking a rod maybe busted the oil pan or block, already to dark to go investigate and I am pissed so I will call Rockville Porsche Audi in the morning and have it towed in. The car seemed fine, no warning signs at all and after having all the work done I never expected this to happen. I said before I do alot of my own work but where this was being covered under warranty I went ahead and had Audi do the timing chain service while everything was taken apart. I will wait to hear what they say but I am thinking something wasn't torqued properly or something.

Really unfortunate for you. Obviously you can't be sloppy on an engine rebuild, but also mechanics are under pressure to get things done within small time-frames so weird problems develop.

Damn!.. Sorry to hear this. Saving grace though is you had the major work done by the dealership so I'd push hard that how could this have happened so shortly after THEY did major work on it.

Yeah since the dealer doesn't open until 7:30 am I have already put the call into Audi America to get the ball rolling.

Wow, sorry to hear that that happened. Good news is that because it was at the dealer you have some recourse; I think their oil consumption repairs have a year warranty.

That's aweful, but I agree with others that Audi really doesn't have much recourse but to make it right. Keep this post updated.

forum member 'Lettuce' recently published the b8.5 engine upgrade into a b8 in his build thread. seems pretty straightforward!

I wonder what the aftermath of the oil consumption fix will be....we don't have a ton providing feedback whether there were catastrophic issues after the rings and pistons are replaced. Likely most are fine but I'm hearing more and more like these. I had mine done at 146,000 kms and after the job was done(about 20,000kms later), started getting misfires again with the water rushing through the dash sound making techs think there were leaks in the water jacket....turns out, there was a hole from cylinder three into the water jacket that was basically pumping coolant into the cylinder. Needed a block replacement after that which I had no intention of doing.......

Does Audi offer a K04? If they offer up a new engine, ask if you can cash out instead and use that towards a K04!

Not that fits our cars, nor would they have an tune for it.

you should see if you have a choice on what new engine they put in there. Try to get a newer model a4 block in there since they seem to have resolved the issues on the new blocks.

enjoy the new a4 for the next 2 weeks.....and beat her severely since youre giving her back anyway until they get ea new engine into yours. You should take this time to gather all the tsb's that apply to our vehicles and try to have them apply it to yours while its in their hands anyway

I had a B9 loaner for a day while the dealer fixed my backup camera. While I had some issues with the interior, the engine was solid and the car handled well.

This is probably the best thing that can happen to you.... Instead of your old engine rebuilt to to fix oil consumption you'll get a new one... 100% technician error, 100% dealer fault and will consume the cost. We actually had it happen maybe 1-2 times in the past 4 years of 100-200 engines rebuilt.

And to the other guy..... Lol, No you can't request a newer model engine. The CAEB engine code came in your car and that's what your going to get. It's not even a possibility, the engine harness isn't even the same

It's pretty trivial to swap out a CAEB for a newer motor like the CPMA/CPMB.

I just linked the engine related faults, I had a few others but nothing that important..............most of them from the battery being drained down from waiting for the tow truck last night with the lights and hazards going.

Somebody here did it in another thread....thats after having every known issue on these engines and not wanting to exeprience the whole scenario again.

Since youre a Audi master, why dont you chime in on a couple of my threads or is the "master" title only referring to swapping "maybe broken" parts until you find the fix?

What the hell is your thought process?

"Yeah I'll take a free k04 and strap it to my blown engine"

Yea no..... It's not trivial..... Lol your talking about replacing the entire engine harness and ECM. Then Trying to figure how to get the ECM to work in a car when the VIN calls for something else is probably the hardest task. All coding at the dealer level comes at a request to Germany using the VIN me. Then Audi in Germany sends the software specified for that car to the dealer for coding. If the ECM part number doesn't match the VIN the software coding is rejected.

Could you get around all this with a VAG COM..... I have no idea. But either way I doubt it's "trivial"

Email me links to your threads at [email protected] and I'd be glad to comment.

And I'd like to see what this other guy got...... Part numbers wise compared to what the dealer told him he got. There are newer CAEB motors sure that aren't supposed to have issues. But getting a newer CPMA or CPMB I can be sure didn't happen

Lettuce just did the swap, in less than a week....

He didn't have to switch ECUs to use the B8.5 motor in his B8.

So it's running on CAEB software......?

It great you managed this on your own. What was your year and mileage when you had these issues....? Did you go through the oil consumption tests via the dealer.....?

My comments were based on what you would get from a dealer perspective. A dealer won't Frankenstein a motor like this. Audi would send the dealer a CAEB. And that's what they would put in.

Yes he did it... I clearly stated he wasn't going to get this from a dealer

It's awesome work. It's sad he had to do it. As much as I love Audi. I've see a lot of blown CAEB that were rebuilt by us but Audi refused to pay for chains and tensioners. Then they lock up 10k miles later and put the entire cost of a new motor on the customer. Which is the likely case in the OP of this thread

But since it happened right after getting the car back.... There is really no hiding technician error

Would Audi be able to hook up poodini with a sweet cash out/ k04 in exchange for a blown motor?
