A8 Brake upgrade -- Minimum wheel size?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am contemplating doing the A8 brake upgrade when I do my brakes next. However, I have 15" stock wheels. Will the hardware fit? Or do I need bigger wheels?
What is the minimum wheel size that will accommodate the A8 brake upgrade?
    Thanks,
    jws

I also have a Porsche kit that would require 17" wheels at minimum.

    Nice one.

I can confirm the front "A8" upgrade (A8 312mm rotors and MK1 TT carriers) will fit under OEM 16 inch Swings.

I can also confirm that rear "A8" upgrade (A8 269mm rotors and A6 4.2 calipers/carriers) will also fit under OEM 16 Swings. But JUST barely. If pads are brand new they might "self clearance" a tiny bit, lol.

The A8 upgrade will fit under stock 16" steelies, so it should fit under any other OEM 16" wheel.

Make sure you upgrade your spare if you need larger wheels to clear the brakes.

4 piston caliper vs 1 or 2, I run floating 2 piece rotors so not sure what the weight is but its lighter.

They cool better, pad type is important for brake fade if your doing something like autox or track days

have you looked at this ? Big-Brake-Kits Info

Even with 16" swings it's a very tight fit, I had to grind down both calipers a bit because they were hitting the wheel balancing weights.

I have the stock 16" aluminium rims and the sport 16" aluminium rims for the 2000 model year 1.8T and they fit but not before clearing off the stick-on weights. Some aftermarket rims may not fit depending on the design of the spoke but I think the factory ones are fine although there is not a lot of space between the caliper assembly and rim.

Yeah, I do have to use particularly thin stick-on weights on my Swings. It is really tight, but that's how I like it. ;)

The jokers at ECS don't make them or a replacement the same size for them they are 330mmx25mm haha no one makes that so I'll be going 312mm and new carriers at some point. My car only sees about 3 to 5 k a year so I'm not in a rush. May even go back to stock for rally X so I can run better tires.

Tar, not to thread-jack TOO much...but why do you regret doing the 986 vs. the 996/Boxster S calipers? Just wishing you had the ability to jump from 312mm x 25mm (A8) rotors to the wider and larger 321mm x 30mm rotors (S4) rotors ? Or was it something else?

For purposes of being relevant to this thread...I believe the 986 calipers work with maybe a couple types of 16-inch wheels, but it's super tight (here's 16-inch OEM Swings running the 986 setup). Safe to say 986 calipers would work with pretty much all 17s? No idea on the clearance requirements for the Boxster S/996 calipers.

If you buy calipers without brackets, the cost between boxster and boxster s calipers is usually small enough that you should go with the larger calipers. I got my calipers with brackets and settled on the 986 calipers. Then never even put them on the car and they are up for sale.

If I were to keep my car, I'd run boxster or boxster s fronts.

Aren't they both 4-pot calipers? Is there that much of an advantage with the 996s just being "larger" (they fit a slightly bigger pad = more surface area of rotor gets clamped, I'm assuming?).

For me, being able to fit the 986s under 17-inch wheels is an advantage (and yes Ray, I've given some thought to purchasing your setup...My S4 rear setup is just gathering dust awaiting something worthy to go up front, but I'm pretty sure the missus would kill me if another box of car parts shows up)

Unless you are doing lots of track days ect the 986s with a good pad are more than enough for street driving. if you have the 986 + s4 rears thats really great for street.

I picked mine up 2nd hand for a deal off a part out car, it was an ECS Kit to start thats why 2 piece rotors. if your building a kit/setup yourself all new do wahtever works for you. 986 or 996 will both be way better than stock and both super for the street.

yep and really only reason i want bigger is looks i run 18s and will never move down to the civic sizes you guys are running. cooling ect is fine with the 986.

i have boxters with good pads, stainless lines, slotted rotors. and rear is s4 with 300mm setup just waiting for ray to ship.

I have A8 rotors with stock calipers.. Do you guys think 986 caliper upgrade is worth it?

i mean "worth it" is a relative term
It all comes down to what youre spending. Would i go and pay premium money for 986 calipers then buy adapters? No
Is the upgrade a significant increase in performance for a track car/aggressive street? yes

I've had both and the 986's make a considerable difference but find a good deal.

    Ya wait for a deal.
I paid 500 shipped with adapters. Both were brand new never installed. Could I have gotten used cheaper yes but I'm not big on used parts.
